Ponting questions India's bowling tactics, Vaughan says visitors need 'Virat mentality' to survive: 'They've been off'

Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting ripped into Shubman Gill's plans as England openers put up a 166-run stand in no time against India on Day 2 of the fourth Test at Manchester on Thursday. Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan has said India will need the 'Virat mentality' to make a comeback in the Test match.
After scoring a respectable 358 in the first innings, India were let down by their bowlers as England ended Day 2 on 225/2 from just 46 overs and trail India by only 133 runs. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett gave England a blistering start as India's strategy to make debutant Anshul Kamboj bowl from the start backfired.

Ponting slams 'tactically wrong' India
Ponting did not mince his words as he criticised India's field placements and bowling sections after a chastening day for the pacers. 'They got scored off on both sides of the wicket, didn't they?' Ponting said on Sky Sports. 'I think they were tactically off as well. I don't think Kamboj should have taken the new ball. I didn't like that from the start.'

Ponting pointed out how Gill got the basics wrong while bowling Jasprit Bumrah from the wrong end. 'They were tactically wrong there,' Ponting added. 'Even watching now, Bumrah is bowling from the wrong end. Most of the wickets have fallen from the Statham End, and he's done most of his work from the Anderson End. They were off execution-wise and tactically they've been off as well.'
Vaughan says India need 'Virat mentality' to survive
Vaughan in a separate conversation with Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz stated that the ongoing India-England Test series, in which the visitors are 2-1 down, will be decided on Day 3 in Manchester and India will need to have an aggressive 'Virat mentality' to bring themselves back in ascendancy otherwise the series as good as done for them despite the last Test still to come.

'The series will be decided on Day Three. If England have a great day, I think they're winning this Test match and that's the series done and dusted,' he said. 'India and Shubman have to arrive on Day Three with that Virat mentality. We have to win the day. If they win tomorrow, the game is alive. If they lose, the series is gone.'
Karthik agreed with Vaughan as he said: 'Those are big words and I think it's a very fair observation as well. Because walking into day three, as they call it, the moving day, you would almost think the series hangs in the balance on that day. If India wants to stay alive, they need to have a good day with the ball.'

'I've Been Carrying That...': Tim David Smashes Records & Windies With Russel's Bat
Last Updated: Tim David's record-breaking 102 off 37 balls has led Australia to a six-wicket win over Windies in the third T20I, securing the series win. Star Australia batter Tim David on Friday smashed a list of records to take his team to a six-wicket win over the Windies in the third T20I of the five-match series at St Kitts. Chasing 215, he smacked a 37-ball 102 to take Australia over the line and an unassailable lead in the five-match T20I series. David broke Josh Inglis' record of the fastest T20I hundred by an Australian, which the latter had registered against Scotland last year, off 43 deliveries. David needed six fewer balls than him to reach his hundred. Before that, David also broke Marcus Stoinis' record of the fastest T20I fifty by an Aussie, which the latter had registered against Sri Lanka in 2022, off 16 balls. David needed one fewer delivery than him to reach his fifty. 'I've spent a lot of time working on power hitting, but now I'm working on my shot selection. I've been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year, and it felt like it was the best time to use it," David said while speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony. 'Was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have a period at home and get my body right. I didn't think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia, so I'm stoked," David added. The star Australian batter struck 50 off 16 deliveries, the fastest by an Aussie man and together with Mitchell Owen delivered the highest Aussie T20I fifth-wicket stand in history, breaking his record with Mitchell Marsh of 97 runs against South Africa in 2023. David's hundred is the third-fastest T20I century against any Test-playing country as well. On the first delivery of the 17th over and the final ball of the game, David blasted a boundary off his Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate Romario Shepherd to reach 102 and win the game, the Aussies reaching 215/4. The 10th over for the Australians proved crucial as David smashed a boundary off the first delivery and sixes off each of the last four balls by Gudakesh Motie. David's 28-run over lifted the Australians within 95 runs of the goal with 60 deliveries remaining. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 09:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Morne Morkel Breaks Silence On Kuldeep Yadav's Absence: 'He Is World Class But...'
Last Updated: India bowling coach Morne Morkel has explained Kuldeep Yadav's exclusion from the XI is to maintain team balance and batting depth against England. India bowling coach Morne Morkel has said that Kuldeep Yadav's snub from the playing XI for the four Tests has been to ensure that the team is in balance, and for him to come in, India will have to ensure that their batting lineup still holds its depth and is strong enough to counter England. India are down and almost out of the Manchester Test, which is the fourth game of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. At the end of the third day's play, England skipper Ben Stokes and Liam Dawson are unbeaten on 77 and 21. No Indian bowler, even ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, was able to leave a mark as they were all smacked around the park as England made merry. 'I think it's finding when he comes in, how we can find balance and how we can get that batting line-up to be a little bit longer and stronger," Morkel said while speaking to the media at the end of the day's play. 'We've seen in the past that we've lost wickets in clumps. Kuldeep is world-class, and he's bowling well at the moment, so we're trying our best to find ways for him to get in," Morkel added. The former South Africa pacer also said that managing the workload of pacers during a five-match Test series can be a problem right after an Indian Premier League season, referring to the injuries faced by the current crop of pacers in England. The IPL final on June 3 and the first Test in England (June 20) had a gap of three weeks between them, but lasting the whole series was always going to be a challenge for the pacers. Notably, none among Bumrah, Anshul Kamboj, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur were part of the final. 'It's a real test. We play three Test match series a lot, and this is now our first time in a while we've done this with five. It shouldn't be excused, but in terms of conditioning, getting our guys conditioned and getting them ready for a Test series coming straight up after IPL, is sometimes an issue," Morkel said. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 08:53 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
