Qatari Olympic medalists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan secured their second title in three Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour events this season on Sunday, triumphing at the prestigious Elite tournament held in Gstaad.
The Asians topped the podium at the Swiss Alps for the first time in their careers and had by their sides second-placed Swedish Jacob Holting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson and third-placed Dutch Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot.
Cherif and Ahmed prevailed in two close sets (21-19, 22-20) over Nilsson and Andersson, stopping a big late push from the Swedish, who came back from a 20-15 deficit to avoid five matches points and level the score at 20 in the second set before Ahmed scored twice in a row to confirm the Qatari victory.
'They had been playing very well since the tournament started,' Cherif said. 'So we were ready for everything. Their comeback in the second set was crazy, but we knew they were able to do it. There are no easy matches at this level and you need to expect anything.'
Cherif and Ahmed had somewhat of a late start to the 2025 season after taking bronze at last year's Beach Pro Tour Finals, as the two didn't appear in a Beach Pro Tour event until May, when they took gold at the Xiamen Challenge. After that, they played in the Ostrava Elite, in June, finishing fifth.
It took the Qatari Olympians seven attempts to claim the golden cowbells in Gstaad as they first played together in the Swiss village back in 2018.
'We need to thank the fans here in Gstaad,' Cherif added. 'Since 2021, every time we play here, it doesn't matter who's on the other side of the net, they always support us.'
In the bronze medal match, Boermans and de Groot overcame Brazilian Olympians André Loyola and George Wanderley in the tie-breaker (21-23, 21-17, 15-10), finishing third. The Dutch played together in Gstaad for just the second time and had taken gold in the first one, back in 2021.
The bronze cowbells also serve as a birthday present for de Groot, who celebrated his 25th birthday on the sand in the Swiss Alps.
'Of course, I would prefer to play in the final, but to be able to compete on Sunday, on my birthday, it's really special,' de Groot said. 'The venue is incredible here, and to win bronze against a really strong Brazilian team is amazing.'
The next Elite event on the Beach Pro Tour schedule is the one in Montréal, Canada, from August 13-17.

Harmanpreet to lead India at ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025

Agencies Mumbai Harmanpreet Kaur is set to lead India for the first time in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy, as India announced a solid 15-member squad for the 2025 edition and Australia series. The tournament will take place from September 30 to November 2, with India playing the tournament opener against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. India will be hoping to go one step further at this year's tournament than they did in 2017, when they made it to their second Women's Cricket World Cup Final, missing out narrowly to England in a thrilling finish at Lord's. Shafali Verma misses out on the 15-member squad. Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol have been rewarded for their consistent performances, earning them a spot in the team. Yastika Bhatia and Richa Ghosh are the two wicketkeeping options in the team. Renuka Singh returns to the squad after being sidelined with a stress fracture since March, when she last featured for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League. She will be making her ODI comeback against Australia in September. Meanwhile, fast bowling all-rounder Amanjot Kaur has been rested against Australia but named in the World Cup squad. Ahead of the World Cup, India will face Australia in a three-match ODI series on September 14, 17, and 20. The first two matches will be played in Mullanpur, while the final clash takes place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. 'Hopefully, we will play our best cricket' 'Personally, this tournament is very important for me. This is a home World Cup. Home World Cups are special for every player. I have a lot of experience batting at No.4, I am just looking to contribute to the team,' said Harmanpreet Kaur. A notable omission for India is Shafali Verma, who also missed out on a spot in the recent ODI series against England. The opener had returned to the T20I side in the same series and was a part of the India 'A' side against Australia 'A'. However, the selectors have opted for stability as the team heads into this all-important tournament. 'She is playing for India 'A' in Australia. She is a part of the system. We are keeping an eye out for her. The more she plays, the more experience she will gain for the future,' said Neetu David, Chief Selector, India Women's Team. 'Our team did well in England. We have been working on this squad for a long time now. I think the team we have picked is the best, so we don't want to play around with the team ahead of the World Cup. We just want Shafali to keep playing and gain some experience,' David noted. India has finished as runners-up twice, in 2005 and 2017, but has yet to claim the title. However, Harmanpreet Kaur believes her side has played enough cricket together and possesses everything needed to finally go all the way. 'The same team played in the England series, and we have been playing together for a long time now. Team looks quite balanced to me and hopefully, in both - Australia series and the World Cup, we will play our best cricket,' the captain said. Swiatek & Ruud race into US Open mixed doubles QF; Pegula & Draper beat Raducanu and Alcaraz

Agencies New York Fresh off her Cincinnati title last night, Iga Swiatek joined her doubles partner Casper Ruud at the Arthur Ashe Stadium for the revamped mixed doubles event of the US Open which got underway at the Flushing Meadows on Tuesday. The No. 3 seeds swiftly moved into the semi-finals beating the American-Italian pair of Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti. Despite its quick 46 minutes, the match proved to be a lot more competitive than the scoreline indicated as Swiatek and Ruud won in straight sets 4-1, 4-2. In the first set, Swiatek/Ruud picked up where they left off in the first round: hot on serve. However, service games did not come easy for them this time around as McNally and Musetti put up some resistance. Swiatek/Ruud faced one break point on the Pole's opening service game, but were able to hold service. As for McNally/Musetti, they faced one break point on the American's service game, and conceded the game, as Swiatek/Ruud led 3-1 in the first. Ruud would hold serve once again to help the Polish/Norwegian duo claim the first set, 4-1, in a quick 16 minutes. Set two proved to be a lot more competitive between the two pairs. The first service games for the male servers proved to be a bit difficult, but they were able to navigate those tight service games with brilliant shots from their female counterparts. At a crucial moment in the fifth game, Swiatek/Ruud raised their level displaying some quality rallies to manufacture three break points, finally converting on the third time of asking at the deciding point to go up 3-2. Ruud would then serve out the match for the Polish/Norwegian duo, sending them into the semi-finals. Between both the first round and quarter-final match, Swiatek and Ruud have yet to lose a game on serve, and only faced two break points in their last two matches. In the first round, Swiatek and Ruud needed only 39 minutes to beat Americans Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, 4-1, 4-2. McNally and Musetti had defeated the fan-favourite pairing of Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils, 5-3, 4-2 in the first US Open mixed doubles match. Top seeds Pegula & Draper beat Raducanu & Alcaraz The No.1 seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper beat crowd favourites Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz in their first round. The American/British pair were able to counter the flashy shots of winning 4-2, 4-2. In the first set, the top seeds were off to a quick start with an early break during Alcaraz's opening service game, easily leading 2-0. As the match progressed, the Spanish/British duo held their first two service games and fell into a rhythm, despite being down a break. They managed to manufacture a break point as Pegula/Draper served for the first set, but a loose forehand by Alcaraz ended the comeback and the America/British duo took the first set 4-2. Brilliant tennis continued in the second set from both pairings, but the No.1 seeds continued to put pressure on their British/Spanish opponents. Pegula/Draper converted a break point to go up 2-1. Raducanu/Alcaraz served to stay in the match and fended off three match points, holding serve for 3-2. The British/Spanish duo would continue their strong form and force a deciding point and fifth match point, where the No.1 seeds would convert, winning the match in thrilling fashion. Pegula and Draper were due to face Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Besides the shortened format and convenient scheduling of the new mixed doubles at the Open, there is also a lucrative prize pot. Qatar SC shock Al Sadd 3-2; Al Duhail settle for 1-1 draw with Al Shahania

Tribune News Network Doha Reigning champions Al Sadd were handed a 3-2 opening loss by Qatar Sports Club while last year's runners-up Al Duhail were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw by Al Shahania in the opening week of Doha Bank Stars League on Saturday. In the late evening clash under lights and on their home turf at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, Al Sadd were provided with a wake-up call by Qatar SC - who led 1-0 at half time. Ali Saoudi (36'), Said Mohamed Brahmi (73') and Jaoa Pedro Pereira dos Santos (79') scored for Qatar SC while Guilherme Torres (57') and Claudinho (84') were on target for Al Sadd. Qatar SC began on a positive note trying to push the Al Sadd defence line deep and in the 31st minute goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham had to make a leap to make a fine save. A warning served, Qatar SC hit back again, five minutes later, as Ali Saoudi nodded home a header on the bounce off a corner kick into the left corner of the net. Al Sadd found the equalizer in dramatic circumstances in the second session. Brazilian midlfielder Torres shot home the ball after Guilherme drove in a powerful kick from just outside the box which the goalkeeper stopped but the ball ricocheted off. The linesman raised the flag but following a long VAR, the referee ruled it as a goal (1-1). Sixteen minutes later, Qatar SC substitute Brahmi struck within 10 seconds of coming in to the match as he headed in from near the right post. He was superbly fed with a long ball by winger Faiz Selemani from the left (2-1). Qatar SC shocked the fancied rivals with another successful strike within six minutes as Joao Pedro unleashed a sweeper into the right corner past a diving Barsham (3-1). Frantic to make a comeback, Al Sadd registered their second goal, six minutes from regulation time, with Claudinho heading in a long flying kick from Paulo Silva (3-2). Eleven minutes of added injury time wasn't of much help as Al Sadd failed to draw parity again. Al Duhail held by Al Shahania At the Khalifa International Stadium, Al Duhail were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw by Al Shahania. Dutch Pelle van Amersfoort provided Al Shahania with the lead (24th minute) as he deflected in a gentle pass from Moameen Mutasem Ragab from the right, inside the box. Al Duhail equalized early in the second half (52nd minute) with Karim Boudiaf heading in a fine free-kick - taken by Bourigeaud Benjamin from about 20 yards outside the box to the right. Earlier, in the 37th minute of the match an Ibrahima Bamba goal for Al Duhail was ruled out for off-side by VAR. Bamba had made a successful kick after the goalkeeper dived to keep the ball out following a free kick and a header.
