Suicide of newlywed Tiruppur woman: Husband, parents arrested
COIMBATORE: Nallur police investigating the suicide of a newlywed woman arrested her husband and his parents on Thursday amid allegations she faced dowry harassment. The arrested are V Sathishwar (28) and his parents R Vijayakumar (59) and V Uma (53), all from Veerappanchatram in Erode district. They have been charged under BNS Section 85 (husband or relative of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 108 (abetment of suicide) and were remanded to prison. The deceased Preethi (26) of Friends Garden in K Chettipalayam on Dharapuram Road in Tiruppur had married Sathishwar in September 2024. According to the police, Preethi's family reportedly gave a dowry of Rs 20 lakh in cash, 80 sovereigns of gold jewelry, and a multi-utility vehicle. Recently, Preethi's family sold some property, and the proceeds were intended to settle debts incurred for her marriage. Unaware of their debts, Sathishwar and his parents allegedly pressured Preethi to bring her share. Following a dispute over this issue, Preethi had returned to her parents' house a month ago.

A 24-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur died by suicide on Tuesday, allegedly due to prolonged dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. The deceased, Preethi, had been married for just under a year to Saktishwar from to her family, Preethi's wedding in September last year was marked by a lavish dowry, 120 sovereigns of gold and Rs 25 lakh in cash. However, her husband's family allegedly began harassing her soon after the marriage, demanding more money and a share in her ancestral property, which was valued at around Rs 50 uncle, Thyagaraj, claimed that her in-laws forced her to transfer Rs 20 lakh from her bank account and wanted her to sell off her shares and clear their car loan. 'They put a condition, she could live with them only if the money was given,' he said. Unable to bear the alleged financial pressure and harassment, Preethi left her marital home nine months into the marriage and moved back in with her Tuesday evening, while her mother was away, Preethi reportedly took her own life by hanging herself. Her body was recovered by the Nallur police and sent to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem and enraged, her relatives refused to accept the body until the police arrest her husband and in-laws. Tiruppur woman found dead; family alleges dowry harassment
A 26-year-old woman was found dead at her residence in Tiruppur on Tuesday evening, with her family alleging that dowry-related harassment led to her death. According to the police, a Community Service Register (CSR) entry has been made at the Nallur police station. The deceased, Preethi, an IT professional, had married Sathishwar (29) of Veerappanchatram in Erode district on September 15, 2024. Her mother, Suganthi, had reportedly given 80 sovereigns of gold, ₹20 lakh in cash, and a car at the time of the wedding. Police said Preethi had been staying at her mother's residence in Friends Garden on Dharapuram Road for the past month. On Tuesday evening, Suganthi returned from a nearby shop and found her daughter hanging inside the house. Neighbours alerted the police, and the body was sent for post-mortem to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital. Police said family members had alleged that Sathishwar had demanded a share in Preethi's ancestral property worth ₹50 lakh and claimed she had been under mental distress due to repeated financial pressure. As the marriage was less than seven years old, a Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) inquiry is being conducted in accordance with legal procedure. Police said further action will be based on the outcome of the inquiry.
