On Monday, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said, "Bumrah is ready to play. It's how we manage these four Tests. So if we feel like there's value in playing him in this Test, we'll make that call at the very last minute. I'm talking about weather, how the pitch is going to play, are we better off holding him back for Lord's and maybe Manchester or The Oval? So it's all those factors, but you've seen him train yesterday, he trained a little bit today. It's not like he's not fit to play. It's just trying to fit those puzzle pieces to get the most out of what we know we do have from him."
"We also feel we can go 1-1 or keep the score at 1-0 without Jasprit, and then again, that's putting the eggs in the back end of the series," ten Doeschate said. "We're going to need him at some stage as well. You have got to decide when you're going to play your strongest suit.
"And that's what I was talking about the weather and all that, but we feel that whatever we put out there, we can compete in this Test match, and you know, we came pretty close without Jasprit in the second innings when he didn't get any wickets, and you can't win the Test series with just one bowler in any case, and the bowlers are very well aware they need to chip in with wickets. Sorry, I can't give you a more firm answer, but we'll work out in the next 48 or 24 hours how we're going to manage Jasprit."

Shubman Gill booed in Edgbaston, Bharat Army goes wild in response after India captain hits century against England

Shubman Gill got some harsh treatment from a section of the Edgbaston crowd when he was receiving treatment on his back in the final session of Day 1 of the second Test match against England. The Indian captain, playing a patient knock under a lot of pressure, felt discomfort on his back and asked the umpires when the next break in play was so that he could receive some treatment. A couple of overs later, the pain got a bit too much and he asked for the physios to come in. It happened at the end of the 76th over. India's Shubman Gill celebrates his century during Day 1 of the 2nd test match against England, at Edgbaston (@BCCI X) The Indian physio vigorously pressed down on Gill's lower back. This area had given him trouble even at Headingley. After a couple of minutes, the physio started to work on Gill's left leg. It was stretched and pressed, and even Gill's batting partner, Ravindra Jadeja, decided to chat with substitute fielders. As Shubman Gill's treatment went on for four to five minutes, the Edgbaston crowd got restless. They started booing Gill, egging him to get on with the proceedings. Soon after, Gill got up and took guard to resume his innings. The boong had no bearings on Gill's batting. Three overs later, he hit back-to-back boundaries off Joe Root to bring up his seventh Test century. He became the fourth Indian after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammed Azharuddin and Virat Kohli to hit centuries in his first two matches as the Test captain. The mood in Edgbaston changed very quickly as soon as Gill got to his century. There was no signs of boos. In fact, thunderous applause and loud cheers greeted the Indian captain's superlative knock. The applause was led by Bharat Army, who went berserk. Shubman Gill stands tall against England Gill remained unbeaten on 114 on the opening day of the second Test. Under pressure after controversial team selections—including resting pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah—Gill responded with calm authority, anchoring India's innings as they reached 310-5 at stumps. On a day when wickets fell at crucial intervals, Gill remained composed, soaking up pressure and building partnerships, most notably a 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja. His century, his second in England, was his slowest, coming off 199 balls. Yet, its significance outweighed its pace. Against a disciplined England attack and amid overcast morning conditions, Gill showed maturity and tactical acumen, mixing solid defence with selective aggression. He wore down the bowlers before opening up late in the day, particularly targeting Joe Root with two sweeps to bring up his hundred. Gill's leadership extended beyond the scoreboard. His ability to absorb pressure, especially when India were wobbling at 211-5, helped stabilise the innings and regain momentum. With Jadeja steady at the other end, Gill's century set the tone for a potential big total, keeping India firmly in the contest as they sought their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston.

Corbin Bosch Makes History; First South African In 23 Years To Score Century And Take Five Wickets In A Test, Joins Elite Club

South Africa's young all-rounder Corbin Bosch created history by becoming only the fourth South African and the first in 23 years to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test match. His extraordinary performance helped the Proteas crush Zimbabwe by 328 runs in the opening Test at Queens Sports Club. This rare double puts Bosch in an elite list of cricketers worldwide, including Wasim Akram, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ian Botham, who've achieved the feat of a hundred and a fifer in the same Test. In South Africa's cricketing annals, only Jacques Kallis (2002), Aubrey Faulkner (1910), and Jimmy Sinclair (1898) had previously managed this. Bosch's Match-Winning Contributions Batting Brilliance: Coming in at No. 8 when South Africa were reeling at 55/4, Bosch stitched crucial partnerships and scored a maiden Test century, an unbeaten 100 off 124 balls, decorated with 10 boundaries. His effort rescued the innings and pushed the Proteas to a dominant total of 418/9 declared. Bowling Heroics: In the fourth innings, Bosch rattled Zimbabwe with figures of 5/43, helping South Africa bowl out the hosts for 144 and seal a massive victory. Bosch became the first South African since Kallis in 2002 (vs West Indies in Cape Town) to score 100+ and take 5+ wickets in the same Test match. All-Round Support: Mulder and Pretorius Shine Bosch's brilliance was complemented by: Wiaan Mulder: Scored a vital 88 and picked 4 wickets, narrowly missing the same double-century-fifer milestone. Lhuan-dre Pretorius: The 22-year-old opener made headlines with a commanding 153 on debut, setting the tone for South Africa's dominance with the bat. This trio played pivotal roles in what turned out to be South Africa's ninth consecutive Test victory, equaling their longest winning streak in history (last achieved in 2002–03). What's Next? The second Test begins on July 6 in Bulawayo, and all eyes will be on Bosch to see if he can continue this golden run. With South Africa's pace attack firing and the emergence of promising all-rounders, the Proteas seem well-positioned for a clean sweep. Bosch's performance not only cements his place in the Test side but could very well mark the beginning of a new era for South African cricket, one where balance, youth, and skill drive their return to dominance in the longest format.
