Firefighter photos reveal wildfire damage to Culbin forest
Photographs taken by firefighters reveal damage caused by a wildfire to parts of a large forest on the shores of the Moray Firth.The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was alerted on Monday morning to the blaze in Culbin Forest - an important habitat to wildlife including red squirrels, badgers and dragonflies.Dozens of firefighters, supported by a helicopter dropping water, tackled the flames which caused damage and destruction to a large area of pine trees and scrub.SFRS said two fire engines were still at the scene near Forres.
Culbin Forest is an area of woods and farmland on the Moray Firth coast between Nairn, in the Highlands, and Burghead, in Moray.The wildfire covered an area of about 2,500m (8,202ft) by 2,500m.SFRS had urged the public to stay away from the affected area and asked nearby residents to keep windows of their homes closed because of the smoke.More than 30 firefighters brought the fire under control on Tuesday.The incident came during a long dry and warm spell of weather.
The SFRS defines wildfires as large, uncontrolled outdoor fires that can exceed 1,000 square metres in area.Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) manages about eight miles (13km) of Culbin, and a network of paths through it.An FLS spokesperson urged the public not to set fires in the forest.Wildfires typically happen in places with combustible vegetation that acts as fuel and allows flames to spread rapidly.

Thunderstorms are on the cards for many parts of England on Saturday, forecasters say. Plenty of showers may arrive as 'a particularly intense' band of rain charges east through the South and West – '(so) expect sudden downpours, rumbles of thunder, and dramatic skies', the Met Office said. A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, covering parts of central and southern England and Wales, is in place through to 6pm. In an online forecast, Met Office meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer said this could be when regions are hit with 'the heavier showers, risk of thunder, hail and lightning, perhaps seeing up to 30-35mm of rain across a couple of hours, across much of England and Wales'. The weather warning states that 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Up to 40mm of rain could fall in a few hours in some places – more than in the entire month of May. Met Office data shows England recorded 32.8mm of rain last month – almost half the usual monthly average. Some heavy downpours look set for north-eastern parts of England and eastern parts of Scotland, according to Ms Glaisyer. Sunshine, showers and strong strong, blustery winds are set to reach parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Temperatures are a little cooler than in recent days, with figures of up to 17-18C in the South and only 13C or 14C across much of Scotland. Conditions are expected to improve on Sunday, with a drier day forecast for many, though showers may linger in parts of the North and East.

Firefighters tackling blaze affecting two houses in Scots town as locals watch on in horror
It is unclear whether there have been any injuries as a result of the incident. Two homes are in flames as firefighters tackle the raging inferno in a Scots town. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) rushed to Shaw Avenue, Armadale, West Lothian at around 3:49pm this afternoon, Saturday, June 7. It is unclear at this stage whether there have been any casualties as a result of the fire, reports Edinburgh Live. One local residents reported seeing four appliances in attendance and confirmed the street had been cordoned off while emergency services attended the incident. Footage captured by local man, Jordan Sweeney, shows flames licking out of a window of one of the properties. Thick grey smoke can be seen billowing the sky and engulfing adjacent streets in the area. Firefighters are seen spraying water into the home to try to control the fire. A spokesperson for the SFRS said: "We received a report of two residential properties on fire at around 3.49pm on Saturday June 7. "Four appliances remain in attendance on Shaw Avenue, Armadale."

Firefighters rescue riders from Windsor big wheel
Firefighters have rescued two people who became stuck on a big wheel stricken pair were on the 33.5m-high (110ft) observation wheel in Alexandra Gardens near Goswell Road, Windsor, when it broke down on Tuesday Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were sent shortly before 22:00 BST and brought the pair down after about 40 wheel, offering views of The River Thames and Windsor Castle, has gondolas for up to six passengers and takes about 10 minutes to go round. The attraction, which makes its final trip each night at 21:00, opened in the public garden in March and is expected to run until early September.
