Ahead of anti-Trump rallies, officials say: ‘If you resist lawful orders, you're going to jail'
Floridians in more than 70 cities throughout the state plan to join nationwide demonstrations to protest the Trump administration on Saturday, prompting Attorney General James Uthmeier and other law enforcement officials to say they won't hesitate to quash protests.
The protests, part of the 'No Kings' movement, are set to take place the same day as the multimillion-dollar military parade in D.C. and President Donald Trump's 79th birthday.
Uthmeier, who along Gov. Ron DeSantis has been criticizing the protests in downtown Los Angeles against Trump's immigration crackdown, said he wanted to put the public on notice before Saturday. Trump sent the California National Guard into the city despite opposition from Gov. Gavin Newsom, and the California governor rejected DeSantis' offer to send the Florida State Guard, according to the Miami Herald.
'If you want to wreak havoc and destruction in Florida, we have enhanced penalties to ensure you will do time, so we do not tolerate rioting. As groups talk about assembling over the weekend, we haven't seen much of that in Florida,' Uthmeier said during a press conference in Brevard County.
However, protests are planned in all the state's major cities, including in front of the Florida Historic Capitol in Tallahassee, according to the movement's website.
The messaging from Uthmeier reflects Trump's warnings that those who protest the D.C. parade will be met with 'very heavy force.'
'If you resist lawful orders, you're going to jail. Let me be very clear about that: if you block an intersection or a roadway in Brevard County, you are going to jail,' said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. 'If you flee arrest, you're going to go to jail tired because we are going to run you down and put you in jail. … If you throw a brick, a fire bomb, or point a gun at one of our deputies, we will be notifying your family where to collect your remains at because we will kill you.'
Uthmeier also announced that Florida Highway Patrol troopers would start patrolling the houses of federal immigration officials who believe they have been doxxed.

I'm sure you've been hearing all week about President Donald Trump's federalization of law enforcement in Washington, DC. The effort to supposedly crack down on crime came despite reports from the Justice Department and the DC Metropolitan Police, that violent crime rates in the nation's capital are down. We wrote about Trump's press conference in which he announced his administration's plan. "I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor. And worse. This is Liberation Day in DC, and we're gonna take our capital back," he said. "Under the authorities vested in me as the president of the United States, I'm officially invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act — you know what that is — and placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control," he went on. "Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs, and homeless people. And we're not gonna let it happen anymore. Fed governor Cook responds after President Trump says she 'must resign'
President Trump on Wednesday called on Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook to resign as the public pressure on the central bank continues to build. "Cook must resign, now!!!" Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, Wednesday morning. He included a link to a Bloomberg report about a letter sent by Federal Housing Finance Agency head Bill Pulte urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Cook over a pair of mortgages. On Wednesday afternoon, Cook stated: "I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet. I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.' Pulte wrote in a letter dated Aug. 15 that Cook "falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud under the criminal statute." Late Wednesday morning, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has told aides he is "considering attempting to fire" Cook. The president's call for Cook to resign comes as public pressure on the Fed continues amid ongoing changes on the Fed's Board of Governors. Last week, Trump nominated Council of Economic Advisers Chair Stephen Miran to the Fed board to fill a seat left empty by Adriana Kugler, who stepped down from the board on Aug. 8. Should Cook also step down, Trump would have the opportunity to nominate another Fed governor. The search for a replacement for Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term leading the central bank ends in May 2026, also continues in the background. Trump said last week that the field of possible replacements for Powell was "down to 3 or 4" candidates." Trump has repeatedly called on Powell to cut rates more aggressively, coining the nickname "Too Late" for the Fed chair. Trump first appointed Powell to the role in 2017; former President Joe Biden renominated Powell as Fed chair in 2021. He's also targeted the central bank's $2.5 billion renovation of the Federal Reserve's headquarters as a "sort of" fireable offense for the Fed chair. Trump and Powell met at the renovation site in late July as Trump once again called for Powell to lower interest rates. Powell is also a member of the Fed's Board of Governors, and his term expires in 2028. It isn't clear whether Powell will also vacate that post when his term as Fed chair ends next year. Reporting from CNBC, however, suggested up to 11 names are under consideration for Powell's role, including Jefferies chief market strategist David Zervos, who told CNBC on Wednesday that the Fed has "never been independent." The mounting discussion around Fed independence and political pressure currently being levied at the central bank comes ahead of the annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, which is set to feature Powell's key policy speech of the year on Friday morning.
