The worst hamburgers for your health — and the ones you should consider for your BBQ to avoid high sodium, fat this summer

Grilling season is upon us at long last, and for many Canadians, the chance to soak up more summer by having dinner outside is a key part to making the most of these sweet, sunny days. However, most barbecue fare can be a minefield of sodium.
A Health Canada report from 2017 states many Canadian kids and men consume the mineral to potentially health-affecting excess. That includes 72 per cent of children aged four to 13, and a whopping 90 per cent of men between ages 14 and 30. On the other hand, notably, less than half of women in the same age group aren't consuming excess sodium.
A small amount of sodium is a necessary part of a balanced diet as the mineral regulates blood pressure, keeps fluids in balance and helps muscle and nerve functioning. But too much is a serious health concern: "The average daily sodium intake of Canadians is currently estimated at 2760 mg, which is higher than the established goal of 2300 mg per day," Health Canada shares in that same report, going a long way to explaining the prevalence of high blood pressure in the country.

The study adds roughly 25 per cent of Canadians over age 20 have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. But it also explains the actual number is likely much higher, given the condition presents no symptoms and develops slowly. If that's not enough to have you put down the salt shaker, how about this: Heart disease and stroke are, respectively, the second and third leading causes of death in Canada after cancer.
Most of the excess sodium in the typical Canadian diet is found in salty snacks, condiments, canned soups, frozen entrees like pizza and microwaved meals — and, above all, bakery goods and processed meats. Burgers, sausages, canned meats and deli meats all fall under this last category. That means when it comes time to fire up the grill, those watching their sodium intake can't just reach for any old patty.
Here, we're comparing the nutritional label on a variety of popular grocery store favourites. From veggie burgers and imitation meat patties, to your classic chicken and beef burgers, this is everything you need to know about the sodium content in popular pre-made hamburger products you may be eyeing this summer.
Pre-formed beef burgers are a barbecue staple. However, these patties are typically full of sodium, with some packages noting a single patty could use up a whopping quarter of your recommended daily value (DV) intake. When it comes to the DV on nutrition labels, five per cent or less is a little, while 15 per cent and above is a lot.

Another potential sodium minefield standing between you and a barbecue meal that meets your dietary needs are burger buns. Some buns, it seems, might have as much salt as the patties they're clasped around.
Some buns from the D'Italiano brand have 16 per cent of your daily sodium allotment per bun. That means a burger with one of these buns could have as high as half your daily intake, depending on the variety of patty inside — and that's before you've put cheese or ketchup on it.
Wonderbread white buns, meanwhile, clock in at 10 per cent of your daily sodium needs — as do Compliments brand brioche buns. Villaggio's Toscana buns have 12 per cent of your daily sodium allowance, while Dempster's hamburger buns clock in at 10 per cent.
Even though it tastes sweet, ketchup packs a sodium punch. At 50 grams — or about four tablespoon's worth — you're being delivered 18.5 per cent of your daily sodium recommendation.
Mustard and relish aren't off the hook, either: According to the USDA, the average yellow mustard has 23.5 per cent of your daily sodium in a comparable amount. On the other hand, relish hovers around 16.5 per cent of your sodium needs for about four tablespoons. Adding cheese? One slice of Kraft Singles has 12 per cent of your sodium allowance, while Ziggy's brand cheddar slices offer seven per cent.
It's possible that building the perfect burger could cost an entire day's worth of sodium intake if you're not careful. But simple swaps — like reaching for unprocessed cheese, going light on the condiments and checking the nutrition facts on the buns — can keep things in check, as will occasionally choosing patties made from chicken, fish and vegetables in place of beef. Get ready to light the grill!

Traces of cannabis found within packets of Haribo lollies in the Netherlands did not come from the production process, the confectionery manufacturer has said. In late May, Haribo recalled packets of confectionery in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg after some were found to contain traces of cannabis. The food safety body in the Netherlands (NVWA) said three 1-kilogram packs of Haribo Happy Cola F!ZZ were found to be contaminated. Haribo's investigation, and tests by an independent laboratory, found the cannabis had not entered the product during production, Haribo said. "We are pleased to confirm that the results of these tests are all negative and there are no signs of contamination," a Haribo spokesperson said. "Our internal investigations also show that there were no irregularities in our production processes." Haribo was still working closely with authorities to determine how the cannabis could have gotten into the confectionery. NVWA had also warned that consuming the affected cola bottles could lead to health problems, including dizziness. Several people, including children, had complained of feeling unwell. Two children were treated in a hospital, and one was temporarily in a coma.

The husband and wife team have claimed universal credit and turned down a Dragons' Den offer, while Jonny has overcome a brain tumour. It has since left him to live by the mantra of 'look after yourself, your health and have fun'. From turning over around £50,000 in their early years, Nursem hit public awareness in 2019 and now anticipate sales of £2.7m this year, with aims of growing their word-of-mouth business tenfold. After six months, her hands started to crack and bleed with the demands of work. The Philps realised she wasn't the only one, with nearly 90% of the nursing community suffering similar issue, despite trying a raft of hand creams. 'Hand cream sounds like an incredibly simple solution, probably overly simple, but sometimes the best solutions are the simplest because people know how to adopt and use them properly,' says Jonny. Originally called Yes Nurse – 'It was like a Carry On film,' admits Jonny – he paid himself £500 for the first five years alongside Antonia's salary. 'Until children,' he adds. 'That's when things become a lot more real.' He describes the feeling of juggling jobcentre meetings as the co-founders 'tried to survive for six months until we could launch into Boots in time". 'I think the lady looked at me and thought, 'this guy's on another planet'," he adds. "This is not the usual person she would expect to be interviewing. But I'm enormously grateful because, without it, there's no way we could have paid for nursery in those first months.' 'Nurses would say that it's the first time in 25 years that their hands weren't painful at work. Messages like that were like a shot in the arm and kept us going," says Jonny. Newcastle-based Nursem recorded sales of £142,000 (a net loss of £18,000) in their first year before a rebrand and relaunch in 2019 and COVID saw the company grow from a run rate of £150,000 per annum to £2.5m in 18 months. In 2020, Nursem's Caring hand cream was featured on ITV's This Morning. A product was sold every 36 seconds for several weeks while Boots also experienced empty shelves for a period. The publicity saw increased awareness of the company's 'Nursem Promise' where, for every product sold, they donate a month's worth to an NHS nurse or midwife. In 2021, the duo also appeared on Dragons' Den and received offers from all five before later rejecting a stake. This all pales into significance to January 2016 when Jonny was told by a consultant that he had an acoustic neuroma, a brain tumour on the left-hand side of his head. The couple had only been married three months. 'I lived on £500 a month, had enough money to fill the car up and buy some groceries. I was quite happy,' he admits. I was going to have to stick my head above the parapet.' Every year, Jonny paused for reflection when undergoing an MRI scan. Nursem, says Jonny, is still largely a kitchen table, remote-first business, which employs 13 staff. The business is now driving demand from chefs, florists, mechanics and hairdressers. 'It is the shift towards people who are looking for something that's incredibly effective and cracking on with the rest of the day,' adds Jonny. 'It's the same for nurses in that you can't sit around for 10 minutes waiting for your hand cream to dry when it's a busy day.' A specialist transplant liaison nurse, Antonia has now joined the business full-time but will still be a registered nurse. 'We've got three kids and ambitions to grow 10x, but this means we can look after each other and be more present,' adds Jonny. The Nursem Promise If we were going to move the brand into retail on a bigger scale, how do we keep our heart and soul in the nursing community? That's when we realised rather than selling it to nurses, we should be providing it for free to deliver the biggest impact. For some nurses it can be absolutely debilitating and painful while at work. Not all hospitals provide access to moisturisers for staff so we decided to try and tackle it ourselves as a brand. We hear every single day from healthcare professionals how much it helps them. How to be a start-up success It's very easy to get distracted and move into other categories. The way we see the future is to continue to look after hands and become incredibly well known for doing one thing well. My key advice to other budding start-ups would be that if you're going to invest your time and energy, make sure you're tackling something that is a genuine issue that people have and that it affects enough people as well. Obsess over whatever the solution is that you're looking to launch, whether it's a physical product or a service. Think about all the key hurdles to get past and be absolutely brutally honest with yourself and actually work back from that goal. It will make life 10 times easier.
