Fire guts Baling religious school dormitory, all 53 students safe (VIDEO)
BALING, June 15 — A fire destroyed a two-storey dormitory at Sekolah Menengah Agama (SMA) Diniah Islamiah in Memali here this morning, but all 53 pupils escaped unharmed, New Straits Times reported today.
The boys, aged between eight and 12, were already in their classrooms when the fire broke out around 7.54am.
Baling Fire and Rescue station chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said a distress call was received at 7.54am and fire engines were dispatched to the scene immediately.
'While the ground floor was made of concrete, the upper level was constructed from wood.
'No one was inside the dormitory when the fire started,' he was quoted as saying.
He said the fire was first spotted by a school canteen worker.
It is believed to have started on the ground floor before spreading to the upper level.
'About 90 per cent of the building was destroyed, but we managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the canteen and nearby structures.
'No injuries or fatalities were reported,' Zulkhairi was quoted as saying.
He added that the cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation.

Two-alarm house fire in Lynn leaves one person injured
One person was injured in a two-alarm fire at a Bulfinch Street home in Lynn on Sunday morning. Two-alarm blaze in Lynn When firefighters responded to the blaze, there were reports of people trapped in the home. The fire quickly went to two alarms, forcing the residents of some of the surrounding homes to evacuate. One person was hurt in the blaze, and four other homes on Bulfinch Street sustained some damage. Don Hawkins, who lives behind the home that caught fire, spotted the fire when he came out of his home and saw that his neighbor's back porch was on fire. "So, I knocked on their door, told them to get out of the house; hurry up. Started yelling, 'Everybody get out of the house.' Ran back inside, got my kids, went out the back door. That's it. Called 911," Hawkins said. Neighboring homes damaged Fire crews worked for hours to get the flames under control, hitting the home with water repeatedly and taking axes to parts of the structure they believed could collapse. Hawkins said there were at least 10 people inside the home at the time of the fire. "As soon as I seen the flames, I started to alert as many people as I could. 'Fire! Fire! Get out of the house.' Bang on their door. It was pretty bad, though. The whole back porch was engulfed a little bit," he said Hawkins said his own home was damaged and he may not be able to return to it for a while, but he's glad his loved ones are safe. "Flight mode, you know? Gotta save your kids, save your family, save yourself. Warn as many people as you can and get to safety," he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters race to another blaze at 'famous' fire-stricken Manchester venue
Firefighters descended on a blaze-stricken derelict former Manchester venue again following another fire. The old Vasa club in Blackley erupted into flames in April last year. There was a major emergency services presence following a huge blaze at the building on White Moss Road. Another fire broke out at the site this afternoon. Firefighters were called out at 3.45pm and found rubbish ablaze within the building. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: 'Shortly after 3:45pm this afternoon (Sunday 14th June), three fire engines from Manchester Central and Broughton fire stations were called to reports of a fire in a derelict building on White Moss Road, Manchester. 'Firefighters arrived quickly and use one hose reel to extinguish the fire involving a small quantity of rubbish within the building. Firefighters were in attendance for around forty minutes.' Harpurhey councillor Pat Karney was among those who reminisced about the venue in the aftermath of last year's blaze. He said: "One of the most famous venues in north Manchester. "So many people will have great memories of the centre. "What a shame it has ended up like this." Police launched an investigation into the cause of the huge fire.
