Kupang couple's Aidiladha preparations disrupted by surprise snake visitor

BALING: An elderly couple in Kampung Bukit Iboi, Kupang, received a nasty shock last night when a King Cobra slithered into their home as they were preparing for the Aidiladha celebration. Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said they received a call about the three-metre-long snake at 10.40pm yesterday. He said the team found the King Cobra behaving aggressively and slithering along a brick wall towards the roof vent. Their task was further complicated when the snake hid in narrow roof crevices, making it harder to capture. "Firefighters used specialised equipment to capture the snake, which took about 20 minutes. "The operation had to be carried out with great caution to prevent the snake from escaping," he said today. Zulkhairi noted that from Jan 1 until today, the department has received 200 emergency calls - 50 of which involved snake-catching incidents in the district. Boer goat nearly becomes python dinner in Baling — but firefighters crash the party

KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — A hungry python bit off more than it could chew last night when it tried to swallow a hefty Boer goat at a village pen in Kampung Mengkuang Hujung, Kuala Pegang — only to be busted mid-meal by the Baling fire brigade. The dramatic goat-rescue mission kicked off at 10.37pm after a distress call sent firefighters racing to the scene. 'When we arrived, we were informed that the python was still inside the goat pen, wrapped around a Boer goat and preparing to swallow it. 'Despite the goat's large size, the python was capable of swallowing it, but didn't get the chance,' said Baling Fire and Rescue chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, speaking to Harian Metro. The snake, clearly hangry, put up a fight. 'It got aggressive and even tried to strike, but our team managed to wrangle it in about 15 minutes using a snake snare,' he added, before confirming that the goat constricted by the python died at the scene. Too hefty for one person to handle, the python needed four firefighters to haul it into a sack before it was handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). Officials believe the python had slithered out of its usual habitat on the hunt for food — and nearly pulled off the ultimate late-night snack.

Family of six loses home to fire

BALING: A family of six has been left homeless after their home in Kampung Seberang Pekan was destroyed by fire last night. The couple, both aged 73, and their family — including two children, aged eight and 11 — were believed to have just returned from attending a religious lecture and performing Maghrib prayers at Baling Mosque when they discovered their house engulfed in flames. Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief, Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, said his team received an emergency call about the fire at 9.07pm. He and six firefighters quickly arrived at the scene to lead the operation. "Upon arrival, we found the two-storey class B (temporary) house — with a stone ground floor and wooden upper floor — already 95 per cent destroyed. "When my team and I arrived, the fire was raging. "We also faced challenges as the access route for fire engines was very narrow, and large crowds near the scene hindered our vehicles' access to the location," he said when contacted today. Zulkhairi added that the Kampung Lalang, Kuala Ketil Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) assisted the operation with 15 personnel. He said it took nearly an hour to fully extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring houses, which were only two metres away. "No fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation," he added.
