Family of six loses home to fire
BALING: A family of six has been left homeless after their home in Kampung Seberang Pekan was destroyed by fire last night.
The couple, both aged 73, and their family — including two children, aged eight and 11 — were believed to have just returned from attending a religious lecture and performing Maghrib prayers at Baling Mosque when they discovered their house engulfed in flames.
Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief, Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, said his team received an emergency call about the fire at 9.07pm.
He and six firefighters quickly arrived at the scene to lead the operation.
"Upon arrival, we found the two-storey class B (temporary) house — with a stone ground floor and wooden upper floor — already 95 per cent destroyed.
"When my team and I arrived, the fire was raging.
"We also faced challenges as the access route for fire engines was very narrow, and large crowds near the scene hindered our vehicles' access to the location," he said when contacted today.
Zulkhairi added that the Kampung Lalang, Kuala Ketil Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) assisted the operation with 15 personnel.
He said it took nearly an hour to fully extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring houses, which were only two metres away.
"No fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation," he added.

Bachok's Kampung Kemasin hit by worst storm in 16 years
BACHOK: A powerful storm believed to be the worst in 16 years tore through Kampung Kemasin here on Monday, bringing down dozens of trees and damaging vehicles and property. Villager Mohamad Yahya, 67, said storms were not uncommon in the area, but this one was the most severe in recent memory. "It was the strongest storm I've seen. We've had storms before, but they were nothing like this," he said at the Kemasin Beach Resort today. Resort owner Datuk Mohd Rowi Dollah said he was at the resort waiting to perform Maghrib prayers when the storm struck, likening it to a waterspout or whirlwind. He said he rushed to the sound system control area to make an announcement, urging the more than 700 visitors at the resort to take shelter. "I'm grateful no lives were lost. One guest had breathing difficulties due to shock, but I'm relieved everyone got to safety quickly." Rowi estimated losses exceeding RM70,000 due to damage to six all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), several food and merchandise kiosks and recreational facilities, including chairs. Some visitors' cars were damaged by falling trees. The storm and strong winds struck about 7.30pm on Monday, affecting parts of Bachok district, including Kemasin, where many casuarina trees were uprooted.

Sabahans sure to reject Umno
Sabahans sure to reject Umno Kota Kinabalu: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has fired back at Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, calling his latest remarks arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political reality. 'Bung is the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity. He tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. That speaks volumes,' he said. 'It's Bung who conspired with Warisan and PKDM in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. SPONSORED CONTENT 'He wasn't betrayed, he was the one doing the betraying. Even while sitting in the state Cabinet, he had no respect for his colleagues in the State government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister.' Joniston stressed that GRS has never been reliant on Umno and is fully prepared to face the upcoming state election independently. Advertisement He also pointed out that during the political crisis, several Umno assemblymen refused to support Bung's move and instead threw their backing behind Hajiji, alongside PH. 'If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you,' he said. Advertisement Joniston, who is also PBS information chief, reiterated that his party would never forget the insult hurled by Bung when he once labelled PBS as 'melukut di tepi gantang'. 'You showed no respect for PBS or your allies, and now you expect cooperation? Don't be surprised if Sabahans continue to reject Umno just like they did in other states across the Peninsula. 'Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state like your fallback plan,' he said, stressing that GRS is now focused on what matters - unity, stability, and delivering for the people.

GRS to Bung: Don't play victim, we don't need you
Joniston KOTA KINABALU (June 3): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has fired back at Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, calling his latest remarks arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political reality.
