PETALING JAYA: The organisers and council members of the Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) 2025 held a roundtable discussion to identify the growing challenges that Malaysian businesses face.
The event was held on June 17 in Menara Star, Petaling Jaya.
The sponsors who attended were Credit Guarantee Corp Bhd (CGC) chief business officer Sean Tan, PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd corporate affairs and strategy head Corinne Chieng, RHB Bank Bhd SME business development head Kelvin Chin, U Mobile Sdn Bhd enterprise products head Rajesh Awat Ram, and the Malaysian External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) strategic planning division senior director Remee Yaakub.
The judges attending were Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) treasurer Datuk Koong Lin Loong, Branding Association of Malaysia president Winnie Loo, vice-president Datuk Jennifer Ong, and Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) vice-president Datuk Vincent Choo.
This year's SOBA ambassadors who attended the council were Nippon Sushi (M) Sdn Bhd chief executive office Siti Noraini Nuawi, Wynkids Education Group founder and chief executive Elwin Goh, Mega Fortris Group chief executive Datuk Adrian Ng, Fire Fighter Industry Sdn Bhd executive director Michelle Hah, Kanika Malaysia Sdn Bhd chief executive Vinnie Ang, and DC Healthcare Sdn Bhd director Dr TS Chong.
Some of the topics that were discussed include helping SMEs scale their businesses and how to cultivate a high-impact culture in order to attract, empower and retain talent.
Another topic that the council identified as relevant for businesses – especially those that have grown enough they can go public – is that they be advised on strategies on how to apply for initial public offerings.
The discussion also touched on the importance of leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in order to ensure business resilience, and how to drive value using technology and AI for business adoption and digital marketing.
The importance of cybersecurity and data analytics was also brought up.
Other topics that the council members agree are important include financial literacy among entrepreneurs in order to master financial management, budgets and investments.
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices were also raised as many businesses were aware of them but find it challenging to implement or adopt.
Rather than saying how important ESG is for businesses, the experts suggested that more guidance on implementation was needed.
This is was necessary so business owners could run lean operations and find innovative ways to ensure sustainable business growth.
Tied to sustainability is how businesses can enhance their business resilience and competitiveness by expanding their business operations internationally.
The experts also pointed out that many of the topics discussed require some form of mentorship for up and coming entrepreneurs along their journey to success.
Such discussions held by the council help SOBA enhance the awards with more relevant and exciting workshops that benefit the SOBA 2025 participants and the Malaysian business community as a whole.
SOBA 2025 is organised by SMG with CGC, PKT Logistics, RHB Bank and U Mobile as main sponsors, and Matrade as the official trade promotion partner. It is audited by BDO, with radio stations 988 and Suria as official media partners.
For details, call the SOBA hotline at 017-231 1789 or visit www.soba.com.my. Look out for the announcement of the first SOBA LAB 2025, which will be held on July 17 in Petaling Jaya.

TH wins Saudi Diamond Award for haj excellence

KUALA LUMPUR: Tabung Haji (TH) earned global recognition after receiving the Diamond Award from the Saudi Haj and Umrah Ministry for its outstanding management of Malaysian pilgrims during the 2025 haj season. This marks the first time TH has received the top honour at the annual Labaytum Awards, presented during the Haj and Umrah Services Conference and Exhibition in Makkah — the most exclusive accolade presented by the Saudi government to exemplary haj management delegations worldwide. "We are very proud to be able to set Malaysia as a benchmark for haj management excellence on the world stage," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar in a statement by TH. TH chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain said the award proves TH's commitment to innovation and best practices, and affirmed that the agency is determined to further enhance their service quality in the coming years. Group managing director and chief executive officer Mustakim Mohamad said the award was a result of efforts to improve the quality of haj management and strong cooperation with Saudi authorities and local agencies. The statement said that TH's win was based on operational excellence in areas such as technology, logistics, healthcare, religious guidance and pilgrim satisfaction, which exceeded 95 per cent.

Rubber Market Ends Lower On Weak Regional Cues, Oil Price Drop

By K. Naveen Prabu KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian rubber market ended lower today, in tandem with the downtrend in regional rubber futures markets, a dealer said. He said the market was also dragged down by the fall in crude oil prices. 'Oil prices declined sharply to their lowest in more than a week on Tuesday as United States (US) President Donald Trump said a ceasefire has been agreed between Iran and Israel, alleviating worries of supply disruptions in the Middle East,' he told Bernama. At the time of writing, Brent crude oil prices declined 2.53 per cent to US$69.67 per barrel. Nevertheless, he said further losses were capped by concerns over dwindling natural rubber raw material supply due to adverse weather conditions in major producer Thailand. 'Flash floods in Thailand ended a second consecutive decline in Japanese rubber futures on Monday, according to broker Hexun Futures. 'Thailand's meteorological agency has warned of heavy rainfall and accumulation that could lead to flash flooding from June 23-27,' the dealer said. At 3 pm, the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) reported that the price of Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (SMR 20) dipped by 6.5 sen to 693.50 sen per kilogramme (kg), while latex in bulk declined by 1.5 sen to 587.00 sen per kg.

EFTA pact key to drive Malaysia's export resilience, competitiveness: FMM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM) says the country's European Free Trade Association (EFTA) economic partnership agreement is a crucial move to strengthen the nation's export resilience and competitiveness. The agreement, covering all industrial products, provides duty-free access for over 90 per cent of Malaysia's exports to the four EFTA countries - Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. FMM president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the pact is timely amid growing global economic uncertainties. "This is an important agreement to support the robust growth and resilience of Malaysian manufacturers amidst intensifying global uncertainties and recent geopolitical shifts," he said in a statement. He added that agreement offers more than tariff elimination, incorporating commitments to green mobility, digitalisation and innovation - factors that can attract high-tech investments into Malaysia. "FMM believes that agreement will give Malaysian manufacturers a competitive advantage and a stable route into high-value European markets, helping to reduce exposure to global economic disruptions and support long-term growth," Soh added. Additionally, the agreement is expected to benefit small and medium enterprises through broader preferential access and duty-free entry into European markets. The agreement was inked in Oslo, and with Malaysia's total trade with EFTA countries reaching RM14.4 billion in 2024, it is seen as a strategic boost for the manufacturing sector. Tapping into the EFTA bloc, manufacturers will be able to drive innovation, enhance export performance, and strengthen their position within resilient global supply chains, aligning with Malaysia's broader economic transformation goals. "FMM encourages the industry to fully leverage the opportunities under this agreement and remains committed to supporting businesses in making the most of this important trade framework," Soh said.
