Lee Westwood tops Open final qualifying at Dundonald Links

The National21 hours ago
'It's a strange route and not the ideal preparation,' gasped Lee Westwood of the fraught transatlantic trip he had to make from a LIV event in Texas to Open final qualifying in Ayrshire.
It was all worth it, of course, as the 52-year-old former world No 1 sealed a tee-time for Royal Portrush after rounds of 70 and 67 gave him a seven-under aggerate and left him perched at the top of the standings.
It was a good day too for the Scots, as Perth's Danny Young eased through in second place on six-under while Blairgowrie teenager Connor Graham thwarted the ambitions of Tartan Tour mainstay, Paul O'Hara, in a late night sudden-death play-off for the fifth and final qualifying place.
As for Westwood? Well, the short hop over to Portrush in a couple of weeks will be the decorated Englishman's 28th Open appearance, a first since 2022 and his 93rd major championship outing overall.
It's been a long haul. Just like his 4,700-mile journey across the pond to get here.
'I didn't get in until seven o'clock the night before,' he yawned. 'I hadn't played the golf course before, so walked it when I got here. I only slept for an hour-and-a-half as well. If I collapse, then you'll know why.'
Sometimes, the golf writers have that effect on people.
He may have been unfamiliar with the various nooks, crannies, perils and pitfalls of the Dundonald links but Westwood drew on all his experience and put on a masterclass in course management.
'It's been a while since I've played 36-holes in a day,' he added with a wry smile. LIV Golf, of course, is a genteel 54-hole stroll in comparison.
Westwood has never managed a major win, despite having more close shaves than Sweeney Todd.
As he clambers the brae on the age front, the former Ryder Cup linchpin is not going to Portrush with any grand expectations, although he did finish tied fourth the last time The Open visited Northern Ireland in 2019.
If the golden oldies are going to prosper anywhere, though, it's on a links course.
'Tom Watson proved that around Turnberry in 2009 and then Greg Norman a couple of years later at Birkdale,' noted Westwood, who made his Open debut at St Andrews in 1995 after coming through the 36-hole qualifying scramble at Leven.
'I think if any form of golf gives seniors a chance, it's links golf because you get a bit of run and you have to use a bit of cunning and guile with the wind.'
While Westwood went for a lie down, Young was off to toast the prospect of a major debut with a beer. It was well deserved.
The 33-year-old, fresh from a second and a third on the HotelPlanner Tour in recent weeks, continued that fine form at Dundonald with a 71 and a 67 for six-under.
A tidy birdie putt from eight feet on the last ensured he finished with a flourish.
'That felt great as I hadn't made a thing on the greens all afternoon,' he said with a sigh of relief. 'But you just have to be patient. I came close in this last year so it's a course I feel comfortable on.'
Promotion to the main DP World Tour remains Young's big goal this season but a trip to The Open will be a nice detour on his golfing journey.
'Everybody's grinding on the tour,' he added of the fierce cut-and-thrust of the second-tier circuit. 'You can see the relief and the disappointment on the faces of players at every event, every week.
"This is a big, big step in my career. I've got a big second half of the year coming up and hopefully I'll start with a good week at Portrush.'
Young's fellow Perthshire man, Graham, had to book his Portrush ticket the hard way in a play-off with O'Hara after they had finished tied on the four-under mark.
The former Walker Cup player, who won the Junior Open in 2022, trundled in a decisive birdie putt on the first extra-hole to set up a major debut.
'It was pretty nervy in the play-off but, thankfully, I got the job done,' said Graham, who was grouped with Westwood and Ryder Cup winner Jamie Donaldson for the 36-holes.
'There were big crowds following our group and I managed to deal with the pressure and that definitely helped me in the play-off.'
There will be bigger crowds to come at Portrush. Roll on The Open.

Chelsea urged to avoid making 'crazy' £50m transfer 'mistake'

Frank Sinclair is fearful that Chelsea would be making a 'crazy mistake' if they were to sell Noni Madueke to Arsenal this summer. Chelsea have prioritised attacking reinforcements in the early part of the summer window and have already completed deals for Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. The Blues are also closing in on the signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens as they look to add depth in wide areas following the departure of Jadon Sancho and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Mykhailo Mudryk. Despite their desire to strengthen, Enzo Maresca's side are still happy to cash in on their attacking talent, and Madueke appears to be one of the players whom Chelsea will entertain offers for. The 23-year-old recorded 16 goal contributions in 41 games in all competitions last season, but has been linked with a surprise £50million move to Arsenal. The Gunners are also looking to add depth in wide areas this summer, but Sinclair believes his former club would be foolish to part ways with Madueke at this point in his career. 'I think that would be going against the grain of what Chelsea are trying to achieve,' Sinclair told Metro via . 'They have been recruiting a young squad and letting them develop for four or five years and Madueke should be a big part of those plans, given how he has grown. 'He's got that recognition from England now as well, and that's brought his confidence on even more. 'Pedro Neto is obviously also on that right side, but given the competitions Chelsea are in next season, you need all these players if you are going to compete and bridge that gap at the top of the table. 'I would be surprised if they let him go. I know Arsenal like to come in for the odd Chelsea player every now and again, but for me, that would just be crazy to let Madueke go, especially to a rival.' Should Madueke stay at Stamford Bridge this summer, the Englishman will find himself up against new summer signing Joao Pedro for minutes in Maresca's attacking quartet. The Brazilian, whose £60m move to Chelsea was confirmed on Wednesday, scored ten league goals last season but Sinclair believes the 23-year-old can kick on and fill a gap in Maresca's side. 'I feel like he's a player who will bring a lot of aggressiveness to Chelsea which I think they've missed in the front line,' added Sinclair. More Trending 'Nicolas Jackson has done it, but it's not his game and there's an obvious place on the left wing where he can play and give the team balance, as he's right-footed. 'I think there will be different formations for different games, though. When they are playing teams where they feel they can control the midfield a lot easier, they might play Palmer as a No10. 'But there might be times when they want three more combative midfielders, and then Palmer can go out to that right side. 'But I see Joao Pedro being the one who plays on that left side – he brings pace, he scores goals, and it still allows for Jackson and Delap to have that competition for the striker role.' Rangers sign Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell for undisclosed fee

The 30-year-old, who still had a year to run on his Cherries deal, has moved to Ibrox for an undisclosed fee and signed a three-year contract. Rothwell spent six months on loan under recently-appointed Gers manager Martin at Southampton in the 2023-24 campaign as they won promotion from the Skt Bet Championship via the play-offs. Russell Martin and Joe Rothwell will be reunited at Ibrox (Victoria Jones/PA) The Englishman did not get the chance to play in the Premier League as he instead joined Leeds on loan from the Cherries last season, but he enjoyed more glory at the Elland Road club – whose chairman Paraag Marathe is also now Rangers' vice-chairman – by winning the Championship title. Rothwell, who played up to Under-20 level with England, came through the ranks at Manchester United before moving to Oxford in 2016. He then spent four years with Blackburn from 2018 to 2022 before signing for Bournemouth, which preceded his back-to-back promotion-winning stints at Southampton and Leeds. Rothwell becomes Rangers' third new addition this summer following the arrival of midfielder Lyall Cameron from Dundee and right-back Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth.

Man Utd closing in on new summer arrival with Jason Wilcox leading the search

Manchester United have been searching for a new assistant manager to work alongside under-21s boss Travis Binnion and they've decided on their preferred candidate in David Horseman Manchester United are closing in on appointing a new assistant manager for their under-21 side. David Horseman, who was a first-team coach at Bristol Rovers last season, is set to be announced as David Hughes' successor in the vacant role. Horseman, 41, will work alongside U21s manager Travis Binnion, who's been searching for a new assistant since Hughes became the boss of League Two side Newport County. In May, Bristol Rovers confirmed that the Englishman would be leaving the club following their relegation to the fourth tier. ‌ The previous campaign, Horseman spent just shy of six months in charge of Forest Green Rovers, winning only four games. Prior to that, the 41-year-old led Southampton's B team between 2019 and 2023. ‌ It was at St Mary's where he and United chief Jason Wilcox crossed paths. The Manchester Evening News report that ex-Saints director of football Wilcox is overseeing changes to United's academy and led the search which resulted in Horseman's appointment. Wilcox, who formerly headed up Manchester City's academy, was recently promoted from his role as technical director to become the Red Devils' new director of football. His work at Old Trafford has earned praise from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who ruthlessly sacked United's last sporting director, Dan Ashworth, after just five months. During an interview with the Times, Ratcliffe hailed: "Jason, for me, is a guy at the coal face. He ran the academy at Manchester City. Txiki Begiristain, I know, thought Jason had the best eyes in the club. "He's a warm character, he's got a sense of humour, he knows what he's talking about, he's got a really good relationship with Ruben [Amorim]. So, you know, if you compare that with last season when we had Erik [ten Hag] and John Murtough (United's former football director), it's chalk and cheese." Where will Manchester United finish next season? Give us your prediction in the comments section. ‌ Wilcox worked with United's CEO, Omar Berrada, while at City. His promotion reflected his increased responsibilities at Old Trafford, with Sir Dave Brailsford having decided to step back from his day-to-day involvement. During his playing career, Wilcox helped Blackburn Rovers win the Premier League title in 1995. He earned three senior caps for England before starting his coaching career with City in 2012. After five years working his way up, Wilcox was appointed their academy director. In 2023, following more than a decade for City, he made the move to Southampton.
