English actor Sam Tutty on Boston, sunscreen, and those stunning Swiss Alps

I'd return to Switzerland. My partner [Carly Turnbull, a wardrobe supervisor for West End shows] and I went there a year or two ago, and it was just the most magical experience I've ever had. You've got to remember that being from the UK, we're starved of mountains. The concept of mountains is so surreal to us in the UK — to me, anyway — so when my partner and I saw them for the first time, it was crazy. It was absolutely crazy. It was just an amazing time. The driving was incredible, the views were incredible, the food was amazing, we went up mountains, we went tobogganing … such a beautiful time.

I prefer doing it by myself. I think you get more ownership, and you can cater to your own needs much easier.

Thoughts on an 'unplugged' vacation?
If you think that's an ingredient that is necessary for the vacation, then absolutely. Hopefully, most vacations are more unplugged than when you are just at home or working because you're having an amazing experience.
What has been your worst vacation experience?
I've been very blessed to say that I haven't had one. I remember one for my mum, though. When we were kids, we went to a campsite and long story short, we booked a caravan [camper] that was covered in bugs. I was so young that I don't really remember. I was just playing outside all the time, but my mum was fighting off millipedes and mold and cockroaches.
What is your favorite childhood travel memory?
I was probably about 16 or 17, so maybe not childhood, but my family and I went to Disney World in Florida. And as cliche as it sounds, it was just everything that we hoped it would be. We booked it two years in advance, and I was counting down every single day. It got to the point where people in my class would ask, 'how many days, Sam?' And I would say '391,' like the weird little boy that I was.
Do you vacation to relax, to learn, or for the adventure of it all?
If you don't do all three, I would say it's a missed opportunity. I'm always trying to go to a museum or to learn about the culture where I am.

What book do you plan on bringing with you to read on your next vacation?
The one that I have read loads is the 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' series by Sarah J. Maas. I've read all of them and they were just fantastic.
If you could travel with one famous person/celebrity, who would it be?
Other than with my family, I would probably like to travel with someone really profound — probably the late playwright Noël Coward. I did 'Dear Evan Hansen' in the Noël Coward Theatre in London and it was a life-changing event for me. I saw photos of him and autobiographies of him everywhere. And I felt quite connected to him at that certain point in my life, so I would like to maybe go on holiday with him and just chat with him about his experiences.
What is the best gift to give a traveler?
Probably a first aid kit. If you do need it, it could be lifesaving. And if you don't, that means you had a great trip.
What is your go-to snack for a flight or a road trip?
Crisps, like chips. I'm not much of a sweets or candy guy; I prefer savory.
What is the coolest souvenir you've picked up on a vacation?
When I was a kid, I went to Lanzarote [one of the Canary Islands off the north coast of Africa that is known for its volcanic landscape] and I picked up a bit of volcano, just from the ground. I remember that felt so rebellious and so cool. I brought it to school and all the kids were going crazy for it.

What is your favorite app/website for travel?
I think Reddit's really good. There's great sort of threads for places where you want to go. Do's and Don'ts on YouTube is also a great one. Before I came to Boston, I watched three videos on the Do's and Don'ts of Boston as a Brit.
What has travel taught you?
Travel taught me perspective. I'd also say privilege. I'm very fortunate to live in and to come from a country where tourism is huge all year round and not just seasonal.
What is your best travel tip?
Stay hydrated. Drink water and wear sunscreen, regardless of the weather!

Nintendo Switch 2: Early review thoughts from our first days with the gaming system
Now that most of us have managed to acquire our Switch 2, it's time to get playing. I mean, testing. The Nintendo Switch 2 became available in stores yesterday and started shipping out to those who got their pre-orders in. Those who pre-ordered via Walmart appeared to have been the luckiest, not only receiving their units first thing in the morning but also getting bonus snacks and drinks. Many of us who didn't get to pre-order one in April were pleasantly surprised that we were able to pick up the product in physical retail stores. While we've already gotten a couple of detailed hands-on opportunities for the Switch 2, this being day 2 means we now have unfettered access to the new $449 Nintendo portable console with its latest release software installed. The liveblog below is a reverse chronological collection of our thoughts, but here's a quick summary of where we left things yesterday: "We're nearing the end of the day, and here's a quick breakdown of where things stand and what we've covered in this liveblog. For those looking to acquire a Switch 2 on launch day, it seems like most people making trips to retail stores were largely successful, and stock seems to be plentiful, even without pre-orders. Those who are looking for supply online are having a tougher time, while members of our team who pre-ordered have had to wait a lot longer for their devices to show up. Our Aaron Souppouris has received his pre-ordered... controller. But his Switch 2 remains en route and has yet to show up at his doorstep. As for our review impressions so far — our senior reviewer Sam Rutherford is hard at work putting our official full review together, but he's been updating this liveblog with his evaluations today. He noted that, based on his lightmeter's readings, the Switch 2's display goes up to 450 nits with ambient brightness enabled, and tops out at 400 nits without. It's comparatively dim for a device with HDR, but the numbers can get higher depending on the game. Sam also hasn't found the device to run too hot so far and that's not just because of the new dock's built-in fan. To him the dock is sleeker and feels a bit more substantial than before. He found it odd that the dock has just three USB ports instead of four on the original Switch's dock, but the new console has one more socket, which sort of balances things out. Sam pointed out that the dock only has a single USB-C port, though, and that's reserved for power. With the remaining two ports on the dock being USB-A, you may need adapters to plug in your USB-C accessories, like the official Switch 2 camera, for instance. You could plug it directly into the Switch 2, but that's not ideal for people who frequently dock and undock their systems." We've already written plenty about the Switch 2, and you can check out our earlier coverage to catch up on all the relevant details so far: And now — our liveblog of our second day with the Switch 2. Hello everyone! Thanks for joining us today as we put together our collective thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2 while our full review is under way. We were eager to get our impressions out to you, and though our senior reviewer Sam Rutherford will handle the complete review, many members of the Engadget team will contribute to this review-in-progress to offer various perspectives.

Bridget Everett on How ‘Somebody Somewhere' Was the Best Experience of Her Life: ‘It's Like, Now What Am I Gonna Do?'
Bridget Everett isn't quite sure how she could ever top 'Somebody Somewhere.' The show ended its three-season run at the end of 2024 with a moving gathering of the show's characters and a strong musical number in which her character, Sam, finally feels ready to accept the love and friendship of the community she has created in her small hometown. 'I'm so grateful that I got to do it, and I miss doing it all the time,' Everett tells Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast of her HBO series. 'I still think about them. I think about the show and people come up to me a lot, so it lives on for me. I talk to people about it on the street all the time and as much as I am uncomfortable having conversations with strangers, I really enjoy it because it's personal to me. I love that people connect to it, and sometimes in a profound way, because they've dealt with a similar kind of grief.' More from Variety Alexis Bledel Withdraws From Emmy Race for 'The Handmaid's Tale' Due to New Guest Actor Rules (EXCLUSIVE) 'The Studio' and 'Hacks' Are Two of the Best Shows Ever About Hollywood - But Are They Too Inside or PTSD-Inducing? How 'The Studio,' 'Yellowjackets,' 'Monsters' and 'White Lotus' Make Bad Behavior Appealing 'Somebody Somewhere' stars Everett as Sam, a woman who moves home to Manhattan, Kan., as she mourns the death of a sister while reconnects with her other sister Trisha (Mary Catherine Garrison). Along the way, she builds new bonds with friends like Joel (Jeff Hiller), his eventual husband Brad (Tim Bagley) and Fred (Murray Hill). 'It's changed me and helped me be a lot more at peace with myself,' Everett says. 'You get the dream of making a show with people that you love and in a way that you want to tell a story, and then if it makes you feel better in the end, I mean, it's like, now what am I gonna do? Because I feel like I've had the best experience of my life.' On this bonus edition of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, we tackle that question of what Everett might do next, how the folks in her hometown reacted to being put in the spotlight, and how 'Somebody Somewhere' really resonated with audiences as something truly special. Also on this episode, we talk to Paul Giamatti about his standout episode of this season's 'Black Mirror.' Listen below! Everett has an amazing voice, as fans of her cabaret shows, theater performances and other music gigs (including her band The Tender Moments) can attest. But 'Somebody Somewhere' viewers got a taste of that singing prowess too — particularly in the show's series finale. 'There's nothing that makes me happier than singing, and there's nothing that makes me sometimes sadder than singing,' she tells Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast. 'But it's really, putting the show together, to find a way to incorporate music that that felt organic. We never wanted to do a big 'Glee'-style number. We wanted to do something how music sort of is part of the fabric of my life or Sam's life.' In the finale, Everett's character Sam brings her friends and sister together to the bar where she works, and she sings 'The Climb,' by Miley Cyrus. 'I used to sing that song live in some of my road shows, and I've always loved it,' she says. 'It is kind of sentimental and on the nose, like the lyrics are very literal. But to me, I never get tired of singing it.' Besides tackling grief, friendship, love and relationships, 'Somebody Somewhere' shined a spotlight on the kind of town that is rarely seen on TV. 'My family, we're all from there — my brother still lives there, and my mom lived there at the time when she was still alive,' Everett says. 'I was like, I want them to be proud of this. I want Manhattan to be proud of this. 'We did a final watch party there, and the cast all came back with me,' she says. 'The feeling in the room was like a rock concert. It was so emotional. I was weeping, just being around all these people that the show connected with that were from there. Feeling like we got that right was so moving to me.' So what is next? 'We're trying to dream up something else,' Everett adds.' I want to do something that feels right, but I want to work. I want to do something. It's hard after you do something that's built for you. I had such a big part of the creative elements, the writing, the producing, all that business. I want to be able to do that again.'
