Metal casket maker ready for trade war to end after steel hit with 50% tariff

At precisely noon, the casket welders, sanders and paint sprayers are turned off and a quiet hum settles over the Magog Caskets factory floor in southeastern Quebec.
"The new closing time," says one of the workers as he removes his ear buds.
"New" as a result of the imposition of tariffs and counter-tariffs between the United States and Canada.
"The Trump administration is charging me a tariff. It's like, whatever I do, [the U.S.] is trying to strangle me," said Nicolas Lacasse, the owner of Magog Caskets. "And when I try to defend myself, it's like Canada is holding my hand, so I can't defend myself."
Magog Caskets is the only manufacturer of metal caskets in Canada, which it sells primarily in Quebec and the U.S. And the primary material used to make those caskets? Steel.
Not only has the U.S. imposed a 50 per cent tariff on aluminum and steel, but Canada has imposed a reciprocal tariff of 25 per cent.
So Lacasse has had to reduce his employee workload from 39 hours a week to only 15 to 20 hours because he no longer makes a profit.
Best response in world of bad options
Like thousands of businesses across Canada, Lacasse has had to come up with the least painful option when faced with tariffs and counter-tariffs.
His first option is to continue buying Canadian steel but face a 50 per cent tariff on the finished caskets going into the U.S. Option 2, and the one he chose: buy American steel, eat the cost of the exchange rate and pay the 25 per cent counter-tariff on the raw material.
"That was the most cost-effective one, actually," Lacasse said. "It's still creating trouble here, though. I'm running at a loss."
According to an analysis by Statistics Canada, 53 per cent of import-export companies in Canada think the tariffs will have a high-to-medium impact on business within the next three months.
April saw Canada's largest recorded merchandise trade deficit, as companies attempted to minimize the damage to consumer pocketbooks.
"We are seeing a large number of companies take all sorts of aggressive steps to either cancel contracts, avoid shipping or otherwise renegotiate pricing, for example, with their customers or their suppliers," said William Pellerin, a trade lawyer with the firm McMillan LLP.
"It's very destabilizing. There's no question about it."
Option to pass cost to customer impossible
Lacasse says while some businesses have the option to pass the increased tariff-related costs on to customers, that's impossible for him.
As the only Canadian metal casket manufacturer, the company only competes with those in the United States. Those companies aren't raising prices, so he can't.
As a result, he has appealed to the Canadian government to give his niche business an exemption.
"Right now, it's only my cash flow that keeps me going," he said. "We need to get help from the government to at least avoid that 25 per cent tariff, like they did in the automotive industry. That's the only way we can make it survive at this point."
The Canadian government has been giving exemptions, but there is a backlog in demands.
In April, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said those exemptions are meant to help companies in the short term.
"We're giving Canadian companies and entities more time to adjust their supply chains and become less dependent on U.S. suppliers," Champagne said.
"There are definitely clients that have benefitted greatly from the various exemptions, including a remission, which is a large-scale exemption that the government of Canada offered in mid-April," said Pellerin, the lawyer.
"The government's looking at it based on the best interests of Canada. These exemptions are retroactive, but we're expecting that they're going to take four to six months before they're granted."

Many Albertans will have to start paying for a COVID-19 vaccine this year. In a press release Friday, the Government of Alberta said it was reducing eligibility for publicly-funded immunizations for the virus. The province said just over 1 million COVID-19 vaccines were wasted in the 2023-24 respiratory virus season, equating to 54 per cent of Alberta's order that year. It said the decision was made in response to changes to the federal vaccine procurement process earlier this year, which made provinces responsible for buying their own vaccines. 'Now that Alberta's government is responsible for procuring vaccines, it's important to better determine how many vaccines are needed to support efforts to minimize waste and control costs,' release said. The new vaccine program will roll out in four phases. During the first, only residents in senior's supportive living and home care will be able to get a vaccine for free. The second phase will open provincially-funded COVID-19 vaccines to people with underlying medical conditions or compromised immune systems, people living in congregate living accommodations, people on social programs like AISH or income support or people experiencing homelessness. In the third and fourth phases, all other Albertans starting with those 65 years old or older will be able to purchase a vaccine. Sarah Hoffman, Alberta NDP shadow minister for health, released a statement calling the decision 'callous' and 'anti-science.' 'It's cruel for the UCP government to put further financial burdens on Albertans who want to protect their health and their loved ones and not get COVID,' Hoffman said in the release. 'If the UCP government was really interested in eliminating waste and protecting the health of Albertans it would be promoting vaccines. That way the supply would get used and we would keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.' The province did not give a timeline for the rollout of the new program and did not specify when Albertans would stop being able to get a free COVID-19 vaccine or booster. Anyone who would like a COVID-19 vaccine can pre-order one starting Aug. 11. The province said it doesn't know yet exactly how much a dose will cost but estimates it will be about $110. Hotel rooms in Calgary and the Bow Valley are filling up as delegates, journalists and security personnel arrive for the G7 in Kananaskis, which starts Sunday. The summit could generate around $240 million for Alberta's economy, according to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, with a long-term boost to tourism expected as potential visitors around the world get a look at the area's natural beauty. But the costs of hosting a summit are massive, and all costs are covered by the host country. The last time Kananaskis hosted the summit, its price tag was estimated at $300 million. Canada last hosted the summit in La Malbaie, Que., in 2018, when it budgeted $600 million. "When we talk about economic benefits, we have to talk about economic costs as well," said Frédéric Dimanche, a professor in the department of hospitality and tourism management at Toronto Metropolitan University, on CBC Calgary's The Homestretch Thursday. Dimanche said Kananaskis and the surrounding area already attracts visitors from around the world, and he's not sure this year's summit will provide the long-lasting boost some are expecting. "Does anyone remember when the last G7 took place and where it took place?" he said. "We have to be very careful when we say that having an event like this is going to lead to a big increase in visitation." Some tourism executives who worked on past summits said there are benefits, but puzzling out the long-term impacts isn't straightforward. 'Difficult to calculate' economic impact in Charlevoix, Que. Hosting the 2018 G7 made Charlevoix, Que., "more visible" on the international stage, according to the general manager of Tourism Charlevoix, Mitchell Dion. "At one point you have everybody in the world watching this event," he said. "It was a way for us to connect with media [outlets] and organize press tours, media tours of the region, to talk, yes, about the political event, but also about the region." But the community has not been able to quantify the economic benefits of that exposure, Dion added. "It's really difficult to calculate even years after. But of course there [were] really some short-term impacts." Lodging tax revenue increased due to the summit, and Dion said Charlevoix locals also benefited from improvements to infrastructure — such as roads and cell towers. Cornwall, U.K., saw benefits, no huge tourism boom Malcolm Bell was the chief executive of Visit Cornwall when the coastal English county hosted the summit in 2021. He said the attention surrounding the summit didn't spark a massive tourism boom, but added it did allow the area to show off its natural beauty. "We were able to expose the [world] and journalists to the sort of natural cliffs and sandy beaches," said Bell. "We had this sort of worldwide coverage that there was this beautiful place ... called Cornwall." Bell added if Cornwall had to pay for the kind of publicity it received from hosting the G7, it would have cost about $111 million Cdn. After the summit, more travel companies from the U.S., Canada, Germany and Italy added Cornwall to their U.K. tour itineraries, he said, especially those designed to accommodate tourists who've already visited the U.K. and seen the famous attractions. "That's been the big growth area," said Bell. "We got a lot more Italians, lot more Canadians." He recommends summit hosts snap plenty of photos of world leaders in front of iconic landmarks and use them to inspire tourists to follow in their footsteps. Canmore, Kananaskis hoping to attract overseas visitors Tourism Canmore Kananaskis aims to use the summit to improve the area's "brand recognition" around the world. "We are working very hard to attract more international visitors, especially from the United States, the U.K., Germany and France," said CEO Rachel Ludwig. "We know that they are staying longer and spending more money. Having that news coverage about the area, hopefully, we'll get that additional boost for years to come." Hotels in Canmore and Kananaskis were on average 74 per cent full in 2024 — up 11 per cent from 2019 levels — according to Tourism Canmore Kananaskis' 2025 business plan. But with new accommodation options expected to open in the coming years, Ludwig said the region will have the space to welcome more visitors. "There's a lot of short-term vacation inventory that will come online in the next few years. So we're definitely ready to grow," she said.

Mona Ghassemi, president of the Iranian Canadian Congress, was at home in Montreal when she first heard about the Israeli strikes in Iran early Friday. She called her mother, learning her aunt and cousin in Iran awakened to the sounds of nearby missile blasts but were unharmed. 'Residential buildings were hit, and there were children among the killed. So this, of course, is very devastating,' Ms. Ghassemi said. The Israeli military attack is reverberating 10,000 kilometres away as the Iranian diaspora in Canada reels from the sudden escalation of a long-simmering conflict. Within the community of more than 200,000 concentrated in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto, anxiety about friends and family is paired with speculation about the future of the regime and worry about the long-term fallout from further violence. Ms. Ghassemi joined the Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC) to protest escalating violence in the country after an American airstrike killed Iranian military officer Qassem Soleimani in 2020. Since then, she's advocated for consular services and faster visa processing for Iranians in Canada. She hopes Canada contributes to de-escalating violence in Iran. 'The ICC has taken the approach that we believe that diplomacy is better in the long run for everybody, and isolating Iran is not the answer because the sanctions and everything, they impact regular people,' Ms. Ghassemi said. Rona Abdi, a Master's student at Simon Fraser University, said she's been busy with calls from family in Tehran since news of the attack broke. 'We are shocked right now,' said Ms. Abdi. 'Second by second, I'm refreshing my phone to get information about the news or my family.' While she doesn't support war, she said that some people in Iran have been 'praying' for something like this to happen that might help take the Iranian government out of power. Ms. Abdi said she moved to Canada because she wasn't feeling safe in Iran and she wanted more education and career opportunities. The Iranian government, Ms. Abdi said, isn't keen on hiring women. 'If I didn't come to Canada, maybe I would have died so far,' said Ms. Abdi. 'They don't hesitate to kill women and girls there.' The move to Canada, Ms. Abdi said, meant largely starting over from scratch, including leaving her job as a biomedical engineer in Iran, to work in a Canadian factory. Analysis: Israel's attack on Iran puts a leader addicted to war in the spotlight While she's lived a great life in Canada, she'd like to be able to go home to Iran and help people there. She hasn't been back since she left the country seven years ago. 'It's impossible right now, all the airports are closed or the flights are cancelled,' said Ms. Abdi. Other members of the diaspora who fled oppression in Iran celebrated the Israeli strikes, particularly those targeting military leaders. 'It's a good day,' said Mojdeh Shahriari, an Iranian-Canadian lawyer and co-founder of StopIRGC, an organization opposed to the notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of the country's armed forces. 'A world without IRGC commanders is a better world for everyone. So I'm happy.' The Liberal government's statements about de-escalation are meaningless to Ms. Shahriari, who preferred Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's statement calling the Israeli strikes 'a gift.' 'Iranian people have shown over and over again that they are not behind this regime,' Ms. Shahriari said. 'Don't be afraid. Support the Iranian people.' Sahar Choulani, president of the Iran-Quebec Chamber of Commerce and director of the Montreal mental health non-profit Multi-Écoute, worries about the long-term psychological effects of a war between Israel and Iran. 'War isn't limited to material destruction. It deeply infiltrates the soul of generations,' she said in a statement. 'We speak often of deaths and ruins, but much less about lasting psychological wounds that it leaves in children, women, refugees and families. An attack against a country − whatever name we give it − puts in danger the psychological safety of millions of people. 'In our centre, we work every day with migrants and refugees who have been directly touched by war and insecurity. They live with memories of bombings, the loss of their loves ones, and a deep feeling of abandonment. They are silent but devastating forms of suffering.'
