Authorities urge caution from citizens as heatwave looms over Jordan
The warning comes as temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days, according to forecasts.
The directorate stressed the importance of avoiding direct sun exposure, drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, and wearing light, loose-fitting clothing to stay safe and prevent heat exhaustion.
The PSD also emphasized the need to never leave children unattended in vehicles, particularly while shopping. It also warned against leaving flammable materials like sanitizers, perfumes, and other sources of ignition inside cars, as they pose a risk when temperatures rise.
The directorate highlighted the importance of wearing protective head coverings, taking adequate rest periods, especially for those whose work requires long hours in direct sunlight, and supervising children to prevent them from playing in open areas during peak heat.
The PSD urged citizens to avoid causes of fire, such as throwing cigarette butts near dry grass or trees and failing to fully extinguish fires after picnics. It also advised against overloading electrical outlets when operating air conditioners and fans to prevent short circuits or fires.
A hot to extremely hot air mass is set to approach Jordan on Thursday, Aug. 7, leading to a noticeable rise in temperatures that will exceed seasonal averages by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, reaching more than 40 degrees in certain areas, according to ArabiaWeather.

Heat wave could break all-time temperature record in Jordan this week: ArabiaWeather
Jordan is facing an unprecedented and intense heat wave, with temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 12-13, are feared to surpass all-time records across the kingdom, said ArabiaWeather in its latest forecast. The forecast, based on AI-processed simulations of air masses, said ArabiaWeather shows the "fiery core" of a hot air mass positioning itself near Jordan, pushing temperatures to new extremes. The record high for Amman, 43.7 degrees Celsius (110.7 F), set on Aug. 14, 2023, is at serious risk of being broken, said the regional weather service. Weather Forecast Details Sunday & Monday The heat wave continues with temperatures 7 to 9 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages. Weather will be hot in mountainous regions and extremely hot elsewhere, with temperatures nearing 40 C in parts of Amman and approaching the mid-40s C in the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Instability in the atmosphere is expected in the afternoons and evenings, bringing a chance of dust, downdraft winds, and scattered thunderstorms, particularly in the desert and eastern plains. These sudden winds could create wall-like dust storms, severely reducing or eliminating visibility. The thunderstorms may also produce rare, heavy downpours in localized areas, causing flash floods in desert wadis and streams. Tuesday The heat wave intensifies as the hot air mass moves closer. Temperatures will be more than 10 degrees Celsius above average, making for extremely hot and dry conditions in the highlands and scorching conditions elsewhere. Temperatures could surpass 40 C in many towns and cities, including Amman, while reaching the high 40s C in the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. The atmospheric instability and risk of dust storms, downdraft winds, and thunderstorms will continue. Wednesday The heat wave is expected to peak on its sixth consecutive day, with temperatures more than 12 degrees Celsius above average. Conditions will be an unprecedented scorching and dry heat across most of the kingdom. Temperatures in many cities, including parts of Amman, could approach the mid-40s C , while some areas in the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba could reach nearly 50 C, with a possibility of breaking historical records.

Jordan braces for intense heat wave
After several nights of pleasant and cool weather, Jordan is preparing for a significant shift as an expected heat wave is forecast to extend into the evening hours. According to ArabiaWeather, nights will become relatively hot and humid across most of the kingdom starting this weekend. Forecasts predict that minimum temperatures in some major cities could remain above 26 to 28 degrees Celsius (79-82 F), categorizing the weather as "relatively hot" even after sunrise, with temperatures being higher in the early hours of the night. The rising nighttime temperatures will be accompanied by high humidity levels exceeding 60%. This, combined with a noticeable drop in wind speed, is expected to make conditions feel stifling and uncomfortable, especially due to increased thermal pressure. The "urban heat island" effect will exacerbate the heat in urban areas, where concrete and asphalt surfaces retain heat from the day and release it gradually, causing city temperatures to be 3 to 7 degrees Celsius (5-13 F) higher than in surrounding rural areas. ArabiaWeather advises citizens not to underestimate these conditions, particularly vulnerable groups. They recommend ensuring good ventilation and drinking sufficient amounts of water, even at night, to avoid complications from the heat wave.

Searing heatwave to grip Jordan starting Friday
Ammon News - A searing heatwave is set to begin on Friday, with high temperatures expected to persist through Thursday, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department. The extreme conditions are driven by the movement of a highly heated air mass from the Arabian Peninsula, pushing temperatures significantly above seasonal norms. Director of the Meteorological Department, Raed Al-Khattab, stated that temperatures are expected to rise well above the seasonal average by 6 to 7 degrees Celsius. He emphasized that the Kingdom will experience hot and dry conditions in most regions, with extremely hot weather prevailing in the desert areas, Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. On Thursday, temperatures will begin to rise slightly, bringing relatively hot conditions across the country. Winds are reported to be moderate, ranging from northeasterly to northwesterly, occasionally becoming active. Friday will mark the start of the heatwave, with a noticeable surge in temperatures. Hot and dry weather will dominate most regions, with scorching conditions expected in the eastern desert, Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Winds will shift from moderate southeasterly in the morning to northwesterly by afternoon. The heatwave will intensify on Saturday, accompanied by a slight increase in temperature. The weather will be hot even in the highland regions and extremely hot elsewhere, with scattered clouds at medium and high altitudes. Winds will blow moderately from the southeast to southwest, picking up at times and stirring dust in desert areas, later turning northwesterly by evening. On Sunday, the heatwave will maintain its grip on the Kingdom. Conditions are expected to be dusty and hot throughout most areas, with extreme heat in the desert regions, Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Clouds will continue to appear at medium and high altitudes. There is a slight chance of light, short-lived, and localized rain showers during the evening hours over parts of southern and eastern Jordan. Winds will be moderate, shifting between northeasterly and northwesterly, and may become active at intervals. According to Al-Khattab, the capital Amman is expected to record a high of 40 C on Friday, peaking at 41 C on Saturday, and slightly retreating to 40 C on Sunday. From Monday through Thursday next week (August 11–14), maximum temperatures are forecast to hover around 39 C, before beginning a gradual decline back to seasonal norms starting in the third week of August. As of today, temperatures will vary across different regions of the Kingdom: East Amman recorded highs of 35 C and lows of 23 C, while West Amman experienced highs of 33 C / 21 C.
