Power sector employees receive Rs6,000 worth of free electricity each month, Energy Minister Awais Leghari revealed on Wednesday, as the government explores legal avenues to end the privilege.
Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Leghari stated that the government cannot currently halt free electricity for power division and generation company employees due to ongoing legal cases.
"We have approached the Attorney General's Office to expedite the resolution of these cases so that we can put an end to free electricity," he said.
Leghari proposed increasing salaries as a replacement for free power benefits and noted that the government is working on strategies to provide surplus electricity at lower rates.
Discussing solar net metering, the minister warned that it has imposed an additional Rs103 billion burden on regular consumers.
"As solarisation increases, the financial strain on ordinary consumers grows, as we are forced to buy expensive electricity through net metering," he explained.
The government, he added, aims to ensure that net metering investors recover their costs within four years while managing the impact on general consumers.
Govt to auction surplus electricity to industries
On Tuesday, Leghari announced the government's plan to auction surplus electricity to industries. This initiative, aimed at stimulating industrial growth and creating employment opportunities, was detailed in a press statement by the Ministry of Energy on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Leghari emphasised that surplus electricity would be made available competitively to maximise benefits for the economy and industrial sector.
The minister also highlighted the National Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, which seeks to promote the adoption of electric vehicles across Pakistan.
He stated that electricity tariffs for EV charging stations had been significantly reduced to make EVs more affordable and accessible.
This step, he said, aligns with the government's vision of promoting sustainable energy solutions and reducing environmental impact.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed an intensified and wide-reaching response to relief and rehabilitation efforts across the flood-affected area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), as heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc. Chairing a high-level emergency meeting to take stock of the situation in wake of recent devastating floods, the prime minister called for an uninterrupted electricity supply to the flood-stricken districts of KP for at least one week. He also instructed that all formalities related to the disbursement of financial aid to victims be completed without delay. Sharif further ordered that the number of aid trucks delivering essential supplies be doubled immediately. He also directed key federal ministers to proceed to flood-affected areas to oversee and support relief efforts, including Minister for Water Resources Moeen Wattoo in AJK and Minister for Public Affairs Rana Mubashir Iqbal in Swabi. 'It is our national duty to stand with our brethren in this time of hardship,' Sharif said, expressing appreciation for rescue and engineering teams from the Pakistan Army, National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), and other emergency agencies. Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah informed the meeting that 37 out of 49 damaged power feeders had been restored. Power Minister Awais Leghari said that electricity supply to hospitals in the flood-affected areas has been fully restored. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said that telecom connectivity had largely been reinstated, with 190 out of 210 affected mobile towers back online. Emergency call services, he added, are now accessible free of charge via 911 in all impacted regions. Minister for Communications and Works Aleem Khan said that strategic Skardu-Jaglot route has also been reopened, alleviating concerns over food and fuel shortages in Gilgit-Baltistan. He said that supply chains are now functioning without interruption. NDMA officials told the meeting that more than 25,000 people have been rescued since the onset of flooding. A total of 411 medical camps have been established nationwide – 308 of them in KP alone. The Ministry of Finance informed the meeting that an additional Rs4 billion has been allocated to sustain ongoing rescue and relief operations. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Court issues bailalble warrants for Elahi

A special (Central) court on Monday issued bailable arrest warrants for former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in a money laundering case. Judge Muhammad Arif Khan Niazi heard the case filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). During the proceedings, Elahi failed to appear before the court, while his counsel submitted an application seeking one-day exemption on medical grounds, stating that the 80-year-old politician was unwell and advised rest by doctors. The court, expressing displeasure over his repeated absence, rejected the exemption plea and issued arrest warrants with directions to deposit surety bonds worth Rs10,000.
