PETALING JAYA: Kids can start their journey towards realising their Olympic dreams from a young age thanks to Kidslympic Malaysia.
Former shuttler Goh Liu Ying, who captured silver in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics with Chan Peng Soon in the mixed doubles, started the initiative to encourage more children under the age of 12 to take up sports.
In this year's edition, athletics, swimming, 3x3 basketball, volleyball, football, gymnastics and obstacle race will be contested from Oct 10-12 at PNB Merdeka Ventures Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
The event was launched on Sunday, thanks to the partnership with Affin Bank and Watsons Malaysia as the main partners.
'I started Kidslympic with the main intention of helping children develop a better understanding of health and fitness,' said Liu Ying.
'For kids who may be interested in pursuing sports professionally but are still unsure of where their strengths lie, Kidslympic can serve as a platform for them to explore and discover which type of sport suits them best.
'This is actually one of the first sporting events in Malaysia specifically for children under the age of 12.
'It's somewhat similar to National Schools (MSSM) or inter schools championships but without the pressure and competitiveness that often come with it.
'MSSM have limited slots and requires students to go through school-based selections, but Kidslympic is open to all primary school children under 12, giving more kids the opportunity to participate,' added Liu Ying.
Liu Ying's achievements as an athlete also spurred her to create Kidslympic.
Kidslympic was first held last December and featured five sports – athletics, softball, volleyball, gymnastics and modern pentathlon, where 800 took part.

Athletics-Fraser-Pryce to wind down career with final national championships

REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File Photo NEW YORK (Reuters) -Jamaican track icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will compete in her final national championships when they kick off this week, the three-times Olympic gold medallist said, winding down one of athletics' most decorated careers. The 10-times world gold medallist previously announced her comeback to the track for 2025, in what was widely expected to be her final year of competition, saying she had "unfinished business". The 38-year-old told reporters at a Nike event on Monday that the Jamaican national championships that start from Thursday would be her last. "It's one of those moments that I am looking forward to. You know why? Because I have absolutely nothing to lose and all to gain," said Fraser-Pryce, who won back-to-back 100 metres Olympic titles in 2008 and 2012. The qualifying event for this year's World Championships that run from September 13-21 in Tokyo comes after a disappointing final Games in Paris, when she missed her 100m semi-final after sustaining an injury in the warm-up. Tennis-Murray to be immortalised with statue at Wimbledon

FILE PHOTO: Tennis - Barclays ATP World Tour Finals - O2 Arena, London - 16/11/15 Men's Singles - Great Britain's Andy Murray in action during his match against Spain's David Ferrer Action Images via Reuters / Tony O'Brien Livepic EDITORIAL USE ONLY. (Reuters) -Wimbledon will soon feature a permanent tribute to one of Britain's sporting greats, as the All England Club announced plans to honour Andy Murray with a statue at the iconic tennis venue. The 38-year-old retired in August after an appearance at the Paris Olympics and will get his own statue after ending Britain's 77-year wait for a home men's singles champion in 2013 when he beat Novak Djokovic in the final. Murray won Wimbledon again in 2016 and was knighted the next year for his services to tennis and charity. A popular player on and off the court, Murray reached world number one and claimed three Grand Slam singles titles during his career despite competing in an era dominated by greats such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic. "We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here (at Wimbledon) and we're working closely with him and his team," chair of the All England Club Debbie Jevans told the Ainslie + Ainslie Performance People podcast published on Tuesday. "The ambition is that we would unveil that at the 150th anniversary of our first championship, which was 1877. He's got to rightly be very involved in that and he and his team will be." The new statue would stand alongside that of Fred Perry, who was Britain's last men's singles champion until Murray's victory. Perry's bronze statue was unveiled in 1984, commemorating the 50th anniversary of his first singles triumph. (Reporting by Tommy Lund in Gdansk)

Paris 2024 Olympics cost French state nearly €6b, audit reveals

THE 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and Paralympics cost the French state just under 6 billion euros ($6.9 billion), the national audit body announced in an 'initial estimate' on Monday. Government expenditure on the organisation of the two sporting extravaganzas last summer cost 2.77 billion euros, which included 1.4 billion euros for security. A further 3.19 billion euros were spent on work linked to infrastructure projects. More than 35,000 members of the security forces were deployed, with the security bill including 315 million euros paid in bonuses to the police. The Olympics ran from July 26 to August 11, while the Paralympics took place from August 28 to September 8, with organisers making the most of historic sites in central Paris, either as venues or the backdrop to the events. The Games were widely hailed as highly successful. The national audit body said there would be a 'heightened interest' in the figures because France is also preparing to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps. It is the first time actual figures for France have been announced, although the president of the national audit body, Pierre Moscovici, said in 2024 they would cost the state 'three, maybe four, five billion euros'. Moscovici, a former French finance minister and European Union Commissioner, said after the release of the figures on Monday that 'there is really nothing to argue about'. Until now, only the separate 4.4 billion-euro costs of the local organising committee (COJO), which represented a surplus of 76 million euros, have been made public. That money came almost exclusively from private financing and from Solideo, the body responsible for delivering Olympic construction projects, which was in part publicly financed. A more detailed report will be published in October as other costs are not yet known. The audit body added that because of a lack of concrete information, the figures did not include 'the positive and negative impact the Games had on economic activity'. It said, however, that the Games were 'indisputably a success with the public and the media'. Moscovici said the amount of public spending for the Paris Games 'seems to be more limited than for London 2012'. The Paris Olympics are most often compared to the Games in London, given their similar geographical setting. Another report on the legacy of the Games will be published in 2026.
