Myanmar junta extends ceasefire again after quake

YANGON: Myanmar's junta has extended a post-earthquake truce, after the expiry of a previous humanitarian ceasefire it was accused of flouting with a continued campaign of air strikes. The junta initially declared a truce in the many-sided civil war after a huge quake in late March killed nearly 3,800 people and left tens of thousands homeless. The truce has been extended before, although conflict monitors say fighting has continued, including regular air strikes. A statement from the junta information team on Saturday said there would be an extension of the armistice – which expired May 31 – until June 30. This would "facilitate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in earthquake-affected areas", it said in the statement. It added that the state was "intensively engaging in reconstruction of damaged government offices and departments, public residences and transport facilities." The ceasefire would also allow the country to hold "a free and fair multi-party democracy general election", according to the statement. The country's junta chief said earlier this year that a long-promised election will be held by January, the first in the war-torn nation since the military staged a coup in 2021. In the statement, the military also warned it would still strike back against any offensives by the array of ethnic armed groups and anti-coup fighters. The announcement comes after Malaysian foreign minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan used a regional meeting last week to call for the extension and expansion of a ceasefire "beyond the currently affected zones." Malaysia currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). The bloc has led so far fruitless diplomatic efforts to end Myanmar's conflict since the junta deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.--AFP

Tawau hosts landmark Scout gathering, fostering regional unity

Nizam (fifth from left, standing) posing with participants and VIP Scout Committee members. TAWAU (June 1): The Third International Nusantara Jamboree in Tawau gathered over 2,300 participants from various countries, making it one of the largest youth gatherings in the Borneo region this year. The international-level event, held at Tiku Scout Camp, saw participation not only from across Sabah, Johor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan but also from Brunei Darussalam and the Indonesian Scout Movement (Gerakan Pramuka Indonesia). Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, stated that the jamboree served as an important platform in shaping the character and identity of young people through various physical, spiritual, leadership, and human skills programs. 'In reality, this jamboree is not just a scout gathering. It is a symbol of unity, a space for knowledge and cultural exchange, and a stage to nurture noble values such as courage, discipline, leadership, and respect,' he said. He made these remarks while officiating the jamboree in Tawau at Tiku Scout Camp recently. Nizam added that the jamboree, which brought together youth from diverse backgrounds, also played a role in strengthening regional unity and brotherhood, particularly among the Nusantara community. 'Knowledge is not just confined to books. What is learned here is not merely for earning badges but for life — learning independence, speaking confidently, and being courageous. 'This jamboree transcends flags and national borders. It fosters the true spirit of Nusantara scouts, carrying the torch of responsibility, peace, integrity, and respect for culture, the environment, and fellow human beings,' he explained. He emphasized the need to balance academic education and human skills, as they form the foundation for developing highly skilled, ethical and civilized human capital. Also present at the opening ceremony were the Head of the Indonesian Consulate in Tawau, Aris Heru Utomo; Sabah State Chief Scout Commissioner Jamaludin @ Jamal Jinal; Tawau District Scout Commissioner Lee Chee Kiong; and president of the Sabah State Scout Council, Sari Arshad.

Education Ministry finalising book voucher scheme for over 430,000 teachers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will soon finalise details and implement the book voucher initiative for all Education Service Officers (PPP) under its purview. In a statement today, the ministry said it welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the initiative, which is expected to benefit over 430,000 teachers nationwide. "The ministry conveys its sincere appreciation to the prime minister for announcing the book voucher provision for all PPPs under the ministry during the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025. "The announcement reflects his commitment to promoting a reading culture among the public, including educators," the statement read. In his speech at the event, Anwar said extending the book voucher initiative to over 400,000 teachers this year is part of the government's continued efforts to instil reading habits among Malaysians, especially school and university students. He also said teachers have a great responsibility in imparting knowledge as well as encouraging students to develop a love for reading. According to the ministry, the initiative aligns with its ongoing efforts to enhance reading habits across all levels and promote lifelong learning among educators. – BERNAMA
