RM60 million Sandakan Islamic Centre to complete in December

Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 Text Size: Walter presenting a memento to Tun Musa. Kota Kinabalu: Construction of the RM60m Sandakan Islamic Centre has reached 66pc completion and is expected to be fully finished by the end of December, said Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kenson. The modern complex, inspired by Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman, is scheduled to be operational in time for Hari Raya Aidilfitri next year, with a formal launch targeted for Hari Raya 2026. 'We're aiming to complete it by the end of this year so it can be fully used by next year's Hari Raya,' Walter told reporters following a courtesy visit to Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Thursday. He added that the design of the centre incorporates motifs and finishes from Uzbekistan, adapted to local Sabah aesthetics. 'The progress has been very positive. We've sought Tun's approval on several design elements, especially for the main prayer hall, the multipurpose hall, and the VIP lounge. 'Tun had requested that certain features from Uzbekistan be integrated into these key spaces in harmony with local designs,' Walter said. In a statement, Tun Musa Aman expressed satisfaction with the centre's steady progress, calling it a future landmark of Islamic development in Sabah's east coast. 'This centre will serve not only as a place of worship and education, but also as a unifying hub for multi-ethnic and multi-faith communities through an inclusive and harmonious approach to dakwah,' he said. He also extended his gratitude to all involved, especially the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) and the State Government, for their commitment to uplifting the ummah and broader community welfare. The project began in 2017 on a 5.2-hectare site along Jalan Sungai Kayu, Sandakan. However, it faced several delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and political instability in the state. Once completed, the centre will feature a range of facilities including a kindergarten, tahfiz school, administrative offices for JHEAINS, MUIS and Baitulmal, a multipurpose hall, and a main prayer hall capable of accommodating over 1,000 congregants. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Vanu is second right. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (July 24): Cooperation between Sabah and Singapore in the tourism sector will greatly benefit the people, said Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon. He stated that besides fostering a more robust economy, this cooperation would further strengthen the good relations between both parties. 'For me, Sabah has great potential for tourism and economic cooperation. Singaporeans know a little about Sabah, and they can learn more about this state. 'They come for swimming, climbing Mount Kinabalu, but Sabah is more than that — there are various business opportunities here,' he told the press after paying a courtesy call on the Head of State of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, at Seri Kinabalu Palace today. Vanu clarified that the cooperation opportunities between Singapore and Sabah, which have strong support from the state government, should be leveraged. He also expressed hope that more entrepreneurs from Singapore would come to conduct business in the state. 'I will return to Singapore and convey to entrepreneurs there about the opportunities and support from this state government. I am confident our government will also support this bilateral partnership,' he said.

17 cyclists to pedal across Sabah to raise RM500,000 for vital facility

MMA Sabah Government Doctors Section Chairman Dr Timothy Cheng stated that the programme aims to raise funds to build a Children's Palliative Care Home in Kota Kinabalu. 'In this programme, 17 participants from various countries including Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, and Macau will cycle approximately 600 kilometres. They will start in Sandakan on 27 July and finish in Kota Kinabalu on 1 August. 'Following this, a charity dinner will be held to raise funds for the construction of the Children's Palliative Care Home in Kota Kinabalu. MMA targets collecting RM500,000 through this initiative. 'This programme is crucial because beyond fundraising, we also aim to raise public awareness about the importance of paediatric palliative care, as it differs significantly from adult palliative care,' he said after paying a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Seri Kinabalu Palace on Tuesday. Timothy hopes the public will support the programme to realise the care home's construction. 'Currently, services like home visits to train parents in paediatric palliative care are available, but we strongly hope the proposed care home building can be materialised,' he added. He noted that MMA currently has approximately 20,000 members, including private medical practitioners.

Sabah Law Society offers free legal clinics

Tun Musa (fourth from left) in a group photo with the SLS delegation. KOTA KINABALU (July 7): The Sabah Law Society (SLS) serves the community through its free legal advice clinic. Its president, Datuk Mohamad Nizam Maduarin, stated that SLS — the sole regulatory body for the legal profession in the state — also monitors solicitor ethics and actively drives community programs. 'A flagship corporate social responsibility initiative is our free legal advice clinic, held every Saturday from 9am to 12pm at our secretariat (sixth floor, MAA Tower). The public may walk in without appointment or fees to consult on any legal matter. Two volunteer lawyers are assigned weekly to handle these sessions,' he said after a courtesy visit to the Governor of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, today. The visit aimed to brief Tun Musa on SLS activities and invite him to the opening of the Legal Year Gala Dinner 2026 in January. Mohamad added that SLS actively supports Mobile Court programs organized by the judiciary, offering legal advice counters and document assistance in selected rural locations. Originally established as the Sabah Law Association in the 1960s, SLS was upgraded to a statutory body in 2017 and now operates under its own Advocates Ordinance. As of January 2025, 861 lawyers are registered in private practice in Sabah, with total SLS membership reaching 1,200.
