(Reuters) -Harvey Elliott may have to rethink his goal celebrations after the midfielder was left wincing in pain from a knee slide following the first of his two strikes in England's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the European Under-21 Championship semi-finals.
Elliott's knee got stuck on the pitch at the Tehelne Pole stadium in Bratislava, Slovakia, and he fell over sideways, but got up and continued celebrating as England took the lead after the hour mark on Wednesday.
Netherlands equalised through Noah Ohio 10 minutes later but Elliott delivered the winner in the 86th minute to set up a final against Germany on Saturday.
'I don't know what I've done to my knee, but it's hurting," player of the match Elliott told Channel 4.
"So hopefully it's nothing too silly. It's a silly decision from me, to be honest, but it's just one of them, live in the moment.
'You do these things, but I forgot the pitch was ridiculously dry and it is the price I have to pay.'

FILE PHOTO: Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Semi Final - South Africa v New Zealand - Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Pakistan - March 5, 2025 South Africa's Rassie van der Dussen in action fielding REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro/File Photo (Reuters) -Top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen will lead South Africa during next month's Twenty20 tri-series with New Zealand and hosts Zimbabwe, with four uncapped players in the squad, Cricket South Africa said on Thursday. Regular captain Aiden Markram and several key players have been rested for the series to help manage their workload, coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement shared by the CSA. Conrad said it would be the start of South Africa's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in February-March. World Test Championship winners South Africa will also try out new players in the two-match red-ball series against Zimbabwe, starting Saturday, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder said. Keshav Maharaj, who will lead the test team against Zimbabwe with Temba Bavuma absent due to injury, will also miss the T20 series along with Kagiso Rabada, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs. Uncapped batter and wicketkeeper Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who is in the squad for the Zimbabwe test series, has also been called up for the tri-series, while Corbin Bosch, Rubin Hermann and Senuran Muthusamy have got their first international call-ups. "With several senior players rested as part of their workload management, it creates space for these players to step in and show what they can offer, and bring them into contention for World Cup selection," Conrad added. The T20 tournament, hosted at the Harare Sports Club, will kick off with a match between Zimbabwe and South Africa on July 14, with the final set for July 26. South Africa squad: Rassie van der Dussen (captain), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Reeza Hendricks, Rubin Hermann, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Andile Simelane (Reporting by Chiranjit Ojha in Bengaluru; Editing by Ken Ferris)

Tennis-Wimbledon champion Krejcikova out of Eastbourne with injury
EASTBOURNE, England (Reuters) -Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova has suffered an injury scare after being forced to withdraw from the Eastbourne tournament on Thursday because of a thigh issue. The Czech player had reached the quarter-finals at Devonshire Park after saving match points in victories over British players Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage. "I'm very sorry to have to withdraw from my QF today in Eastbourne as I'm having some soreness in my right thigh," the 29-year-old Krejcikova said on social media. "I've truly enjoyed my time down here the past week and loved being back on the grass." Krejcikova looked to be moving okay against Burrage but with the defence of her Wimbledon crown beginning on Tuesday she has taken the decision to fully recover. Her withdrawal means French qualifier Varvara Gracheva is in the semi-finals. (Reporting by Martyn Herman; Editing by Ken Ferris)
