'Not just a party:' World Pride celebrations end with defiant politics on display

After the raucous rainbow-hued festivities of Saturday's parade, the final day of World Pride 2025 in the nation's capital kicked off on a more downbeat note. More than a thousand people gathered under grey skies Sunday morning at the Lincoln Memorial for a rally that will lead into a protest march, as the community gathers its strength for a looming fight under President Donald Trump 's second administration. 'This is not just a party,' Ashley Smith, board president of Capital Pride Alliance. 'This is a rally for our lives.' Smith acknowledged that international attendance numbers for the bi-annual World Pride were measurably down, with many potential attendees avoiding travel to the U.S. due to either fear of harassment or in protest of Trump's policies. 'That should disturb us and mobilize us,' Smith said. Over a thousand people cheered on LGBTQ+ activists taking the stage while waving both traditional Pride flags and flags representing transgender, bisexual, intersex and other communities. Many had rainbow glitter and rhinestones adorning their faces. They held signs declaring 'Fight back,' 'Gay is good,' 'Ban bombs not bathrooms' and 'We will not be erased.' Trump's campaign against transgender protections and oft-stated antipathy for drag shows have set the community on edge, with some hoping to see a renewed wave of street politics in response. 'Trans people just want to be loved. Everybody wants to live their own lives and I don't understand the problem with it all,' said Tyler Cargill, who came wearing an elaborate costume with a hat topped by a replica of the U.S. Capitol building. Wes Kincaid drove roughly 6 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina to attend this year. Sitting on a park bench near the reflecting pond, Kincaid said he made a point of attending this year, 'because it's more important than ever to show up for our community.' Reminders of the cuts to federal government programs were on full display, Sunday. One attendee waved a massive rainbow flag affixed on the same staff as a large USAID flag; another held a 'Proud gay federal worker' sign; and a third held an umbrella with the logos of various federal program facing cuts — including the PBS logo. Trump's anti-trans rhetoric had fueled fears of violence or protests targeting World Pride participants; at one point earlier this spring, rumors circulated that the Proud Boys were planning to disrupt this weekend's celebrations. Those concerns prompted organizers to install security fencing around the entire two-day street party on a multi-block stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue. But so far, the only clear act of aggression has been the vandalizing of a queer bar last week. Late Saturday night, there was a pair of violent incidents near Dupont Circle — one of the epicenters of the World Pride celebrations. Two juveniles were stabbed and a man was shot in the foot in separate incidents. The Metropolitan Police Department says it is not clear if either incident was directly related to World Pride.

Chris Stark shares health update and 'weird' stage after cancer operation

Capital Breakfast star Chris Stark has shared how he's doing after an admittedly 'crap' year in which he was diagnosed with testicular cancer during a routine GP appointment Radio star Chris Stark has candidly opened up on the ' weird ' unexpected phase he has experienced after undergoing chemotherapy treatment and operations for cancer. Capital Breakfast star Chris, 38, revealed in March this year that he had been diagnosed and treated for testicular cancer – but insisted in the heartfelt statement he is "effectively cured" after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Chris was flooded with support and praise from friends and fans following his candid health announcement. ‌ Now, weeks after sharing the news, Chris has shared an update on his health and revealed the 'weird' phase he unexpectedly found himself in after being given the all clear. When asked by the Mirror how he's doing, Chris revealed to us at the Pro Am Padel Tour launch: 'I thought I was doing OK until I came here and played a bit of Padel. ‌ 'I feel like… I'm sure people who have had an experience with cancer or chemotherapy or just being unwell at some point this year – it's really hard because you get into the summer months and suddenly… I'm sort of looking at myself and feeling so unfit and I feel like that's a really frustrating feeling and I work in a job where, you know, you see a lot of pictures of yourself and videos of yourself and I feel… you know. 'I'm just really pleased that this thing was found and I had the surgery but there's a weird, kind of, after thing in this that I hadn't really thought about, which is I just want to feel a little better about myself. 'And I'm really lucky because I go into a job where I work with lovely people who, and I really feel like, they have been amazing throughout this but I really want to, as I say, I want to find some stuff this year to kind of just make myself feel a little bit better and that's kind of why I came here today. 'Everything about this – although it seems probably simple and easy to anyone else – I just wanna start doing some stuff that will make me feel a bit fitter, show that you can do something like that and challenge myself a little bit more. So I'm playing cr*p and I feel desperately sweaty, like we're sat down now as we do this, but I feel good for turning up today.' ‌ That Peter Crouch Podcast star Chris has played a few games of the increasingly popular sport of padel, before taking part in the event. But, has admitted his interest in the sport has sparked a rivalry between himself and his Capital Breakfast co-host, Jordan North. He tells us: 'I started padel and he [Jordan] started getting involved and I noticed a bit of a trend where he keeps copying me with things I'm sort of into and then I got called up to do this and he, I think, is quite annoyed that he didn't get called up to do it and it's led to a bit of tension at work. ‌ 'It's kind of under lying, which one of us is going to end up on top on the padel game – we're like two rivals at the moment. And then maybe, one day, there will be this glorious moment where we end up together but, right now – I get on really well with Jordan – but this is the one thing that we seem to be falling out on and it's spilling out onto the show a little bit,' he joked. While Chris insists Jordan is the one who copied him with his interest in the sport, Chris is happy to return the favour by following in Jordan's footsteps and heading into the I'm A Celeb jungle. When asked if he'd do the ITV show, Chris says: 'I love I'm A Celebrity, it's the biggest show isn't it? He [Jordan] had a really weird time because, obviously, he did it when it was in the castle so I don't know if it'd be a totally different proposition doing the jungle. 'But, yeah, who doesn't want to do that show it'd be terrifying. But then I feel like I've kind of had a year of doing things that… I had a really crappy start to the year with my health and that's where you actually get a little bit scared and, I think, it kind of gives you a little bit of perspective with how ridiculous and fun can your job be where you go and do something like that. I kind of like the idea of taking on a few challenges and, maybe, this has kind of reset my brain a bit to kind of give things a go. I don't know I think it'd be an amazing thing to go down.' Luxury eco-friendly paint range pro decorators say is 'excellent'

This new range could be perfect for shoppers looking to spruce up their homes for summer When it comes to giving the home a new lease of life, a lick of paint can work wonders. Whether it's painting the kitchen cupboards, adding a splash of colour to skirting boards, or creating a feature wall in the living room, the right paint can really bring a space to life. Finding the right paint shades for the space can be a hassle - there are so many options out there, and it can feel daunting to commit based on a single swatch. However, a new line of paints from luxury eco-friendly brand COAT Paints, in collaboration with TV personality and wellness advocate Millie Mackintosh, could be the ticket. The range includes a selection of shades for all corners of the home, from bedrooms to bathrooms, kitchens to hallways. Speaking of the range she's worked on, the former Made in Chelsea star, 35, says: "Creating a mindful home environment has been essential to me, especially as I've navigated motherhood and my personal wellness journey. "Every colour in this collection is a reflection of that - whether it's the calming tones of 'Balance' or the warm embrace of 'Gratitude.' I wanted this palette to encourage people to slow down, reflect, and create spaces that feel comforting and rejuvenating." The COAT x Millie Mackintosh range includes six colours. There's Presence, a Blush Plaster Pink; Poise, a Pale Blush Pink; Centred, an Earthy Pale Beige; Renew, a Teal Blue; Manifest, a Soft Fresh Green; and Nourish, a soothing, muted sage green. All of the shades come in six finishes, too - Flat Matt, Soft Sheen, Interior Eggshell, Exterior Eggshell, Claypaint, and Floor Paint - so there's a formula for every surface. Depending on how much paint is needed, the collection is available at a range of price points: from £30 for 1L, £56 for 2.5L, or £96 for 5L. Plus, it's easy to try before you buy, with peel-and-stick samples available in each shade which are fully recyclable and 100% accurate to the real paint colour. If this range doesn't quite resonate with shoppers, they could try Farrow & Ball's new spring range, which includes shades like deep red, mustard yellow, olive green and duck-egg blue, with prices hovering around £33 for 750ml to £128 for 5L. Alternatively, House of Hackney has a wide range of made-to-order, water based, low VOC, low odour paints throughout the colour spectrum, with prices around £59 for 2.5L or £100 for 5L. The paints from COAT - a B Corp Certified company - which are water-based, low V.O.C, premium paints formulated to be amongst the highest-quality on the market, have proven to be a favourite among shoppers. The range currently has perfect reviews. One shopper said: "Just had our hallway and landing painted in Coat paint whilst away and all I can say is wow! Decorator not used Coat before but commented on excellent application. We have used Coat before ourselves and found it to be extremely easy to use and also the colours are amazing. Customer service is also second to none. We needed paint quickly and they upgraded to next day delivery." Another said: "Beautiful soft hues, with colours you can't find anywhere else. I really enjoyed transforming my rooms with this paint, it has great coverage and is a real joy to use." Someone who tried the Poise shade said: "I love this colour! I really wanted a pink bedroom but not too little girly feel. Poise was the perfect shade for that, it's so soft and subtle but at the same, so girly and a great pink. Did 2 layers and it's so lush!" A shopper who used the Renew shade noted: "The colour is a little different from what it looks like on the website - in my living room anyway - a bit more blue and less teal. It matches the sample sticker perfectly though, so I got what I was expecting." One person did have an issue with delivery: "Lovely paint colours, like the eco credentials. Good coverage and nice finish. Some issues with couriers lately, but customer service always very helpful and solve problems quickly." Another said they had concerns which turned out to be unfounded: "I was unsure how pink this would be, but it's just perfect," they said of Poise.
