Luka Doncic could sign extension with Lakers sooner rather than later
He was reportedly active in recruiting guard Marcus Smart to the Lakers, which is a sign that he's emotionally connected to the franchise. Doncic will be representing his native Slovenia in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament later this summer.
It was thought that he might wait until the end of the summer, when he returns to the United States, to sign his extension. But according to Martin Pavcnik of Sportklub, the superstar may take care of that piece of business before Eurobasket begins (h/t Lakers Nation).
"For him, for the fans and for his ambitions, the most important thing is that Luka Dončić will wear the national team jersey again. The date of his arrival is still shrouded in mystery, but it is expected to be August 4. This suggests that he may sign a new contract with the LA Lakers before then."
As of now, Doncic can opt out of his current contract next summer. But the Lakers have already started building a winning roster around the 26-year-old by bringing in Smart, a former Defensive Player of the Year, and Deandre Ayton, a young rim-running center who is a legitimate lob threat.
The superstar was traded to Los Angeles on Feb. 1 and averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists a game as a member of the Lakers during the regular season.

Saliou Niang helps Italy defeat Senegal in EuroBasket exhibition game
Cleveland Cavaliers draft pick Saliou Niang neared a double-digit scoring effort on Sunday to help Italy defeat Senegal in its second exhibition game ahead of the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket Championship. Momo Diouf produced a game-high 17 points, Gabriele Procida scored 12 points and seven rebounds and Niang added nine points and seven rebounds in the 80-56 victory. The group claimed the Trentino Basket Cup after defeating Iceland on Saturday. Italy will play four additional preparation games before opening EuroBasket on Aug. 28 against Greece. In addition to Diouf, Niang and Procida, the team is also headlined by Miami Heat forward Simone Fontecchio and former NBA forward Nicolò Melli. Niang was the 58th pick in the 2025 NBA draft after averaging 7.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists on 51.3% shooting from the field last season with Dolomiti Energia Trento. He helped the team to the Italian Cup and was the Italian Lega A Most Improved Player. The Senegalese-Italian forward played with the Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League, averaging 7.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists on 41.2% shooting from the field in three games. He neared a double-double on July 13 with six points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Niang and Italy return to action on Saturday against Latvia. They will also play Argentina (Aug. 14), Latvia (Aug. 21) and Greece (Aug. 22) in their final tune-up games before the 42nd edition of the European tournament.

Aaron Donald Has Officially Returned to Rams Training Camp
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Rams are currently in the midst of training camp, and the team received a massive visit. Former Rams legend Aaron Donald has officially returned. Aaron Donald making an appearance at #Rams camp: — Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) August 3, 2025 It is not rare for former players to show up to wish the team good luck and potentially help coach up the guys on the team. However, there have been plenty of rumors regarding Donald either ending his retirement or heading into coaching. Further reports showcased Donald speaking to Rams general manager Les Snead. Though the pair could be simply chatting and catching up, this could lead to more fruitful conversations. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JANUARY 14: Aaron Donald #99 of the Los Angeles Rams looks on from the sideline prior to an NFC Wild Card Playoff football game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on January 14, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. Aaron Donald might not be as retired as he says he is, according to Rams legend Marshall Faulk. MoreMore news: Chargers and Keenan Allen Reunion Could Happen Soon Donald played all 10 seasons with the Rams and was a monster pass rusher. He set a career high of 20.5 sacks in 2018 and put together a career of 111.0 sacks through those 10 seasons. Donald also secured three Defensive Player of the Year nods, 10 Pro Bowl nods, and eight First-team All-Pro nods. He should be an easy first-ballot Hall of Famer as well. Though there have been rumors that Donald could end his retirement, that might not be the case. It would be more plausible that he would instead want to come over and help to coach the defense to some degree. Either way, the Rams getting a visit from their former defensive legend was sure to fire up the team. The Rams surprised everyone in 2024 when they were viewed as a "rebuilding" team. Despite the rough start of 1-4, the team would rifle off a 5-1 record in the final six games of the regular season. Matthew Stafford played a wonderful season despite also having to deal with a severely injured offensive line. The Rams would make it to the postseason and handily beat the then-red-hot Minnesota Vikings in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Sadly, Los Angeles' postseason berth was cut short when they lost in the Divisional Round to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Things are looking up for the Rams, and the team was able to land star wide receiver Davante Adams in free agency. Also, Jared Verse is one of the most dynamic defensive players in the league and has been spending time with Donald. The pair could link up even more should Donald stick around for more time with the team. For more on the Rams and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.

The Lakers' full 2025-26 preseason schedule has been revealed
It may be the middle of the summer, but before we know it, it will be time for NBA teams to report to training camp and start the new season. About two months ago, the Los Angeles Lakers announced their preseason schedule for the upcoming season. They will have games at Arena versus the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, as well as a contest at Acrisure Arena in greater Palm Springs against the Phoenix Suns and one in Las Vegas against the Dallas Mavericks. Their full preseason schedule has now been revealed, per Khobi Price of Southern California News Group. The Lakers will also play a road game on Oct. 5 versus the Warriors and another one against the Suns on Oct. 14. One thing to note is that the Lakers will have a set of back-to-back games on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, as well as a total of four games in six games to close out their exhibition schedule. It will therefore be interesting to see how much the team's veterans, especially LeBron James, will play during that stretch.
