Romantic Warrior ready to hit Dubai Turf ‘all guns blazing' after drawing gate nine
James McDonald confident the Hong Kong superstar is ready to produce another top performance at Meydan this Saturday
James McDonald is confident Romantic Warrior is ready to produce another top performance in Saturday's Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m) six weeks after his Herculean second in the Group One Saudi Cup (1,800m) on dirt.
The 10-time Group One winner, who returns to the Meydan course and distance of his track-record blitz in January's Group One Jebel Hatta (1,800m), continues to thrive after more than three months in the Middle East.
'It seems like he's taken no side effects from Saudi, he's bounced out of it well – all guns blazing, really,' said New Zealander McDonald, who is missing two Group One meetings in Sydney to ride in Dubai.
'I don't think he's taken a backward step from Saudi so hopefully he runs well.
'He seems to love it here in Dubai – how can you not? It's a great place. He seems to be very happy, healthy and he's working well.'
After taking a sit from gate one in the Jebel Hatta, trainer Danny Shum Chap-shing is confident Romantic Warrior again has options this weekend after landing gate nine at Wednesday morning's barrier draw at Meydan.
'Gate nine is not a problem. He's flexible. If he gets a fast pace, [McDonald] can give him a chance to settle. If the race is slow, he can sit close,' said Shum, adding that he was thrilled with his superstar's final piece of fast work on the Meydan turf on Tuesday morning.
'He's very fit at the moment so I talked with James McDonald and asked him to give him a happy, easy, smooth gallop on the turf and let him enjoy the work.
Roll on the Dubai Turf! 💙

'James gave me a very positive report. He said the horse is very fit. He loves the horse. The horse loves it here and he is very happy here.'
Romantic Warrior will have plenty of time to find a position down the long back straight in a race featuring reigning Dubai Turf champion Facteur Cheval, Godolphin's Nations Pride and a pair of Japanese gallopers who finished runner-up at December's Hong Kong International Races – Liberty Island and Soul Rush.
'This race is a stronger race than what he competed in in January here but he's very good,' said McDonald, who will also ride Howdeepisyourlove and Sword Point for Hong Kong on Saturday night.
'He's a horse that thrives on high pressure and obviously the tougher the races, the better he goes, as we've found out over the years.
'He'll be up for the challenge again. Obviously, it's a very competitive race with some very strong contenders and he'll have to be at his brilliant best.
'I think if he runs up to the Jebel Hatta run, he'll be very hard to beat.'
Romantic Warrior is the red-hot Dubai Turf favourite in fixed-odds markets and Howdeepisyourlove is also proving popular in betting for the Group One Al Quoz Sprint (1,200m) down the Meydan straight.
Considered around a $3 chance, Howdeepisyourlove will look to land a second consecutive Al Quoz Sprint victory for Hong Kong after the success of California Spangle 12 months ago.
'It seems OK, he should be able to get a clear run from there,' said trainer John Size after Howdeepisyourlove joined Romantic Warrior in drawing gate nine.
'The horse gets back in the field a little bit and hopefully he's a late finisher and that should probably suit him.
'The horse is in pretty good shape and he's travelled well. He looks good and he's done his work properly.
'He continues to do well, so I think the race is coming up at the right time and it's a matter of circumstances on the day for these sort of events.'
Hong Kong's final runner on Dubai World Cup night, the Frankie Lor Fu-chuen-trained Sword Point, will jump from gate two in the Group Two Godolphin Mile on the dirt.

Britney Wong doubles up again at Sha Tin as Cheval Valiant leads them a merry dance
Britney Wong Po-ni landed consecutive Sha Tin doubles headlined by Cheval Valiant's all-the-way win in the Class Four Lai On Handicap (1,000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The 26-year-old smashed out of the gates on the Charm Spirit galloper and never looked back, crossing over to the stands rail from gate nine and setting comfortable fractions on the front end. When the pair were faced by a myriad of challengers in the final 200m, Wong galvanised her willing partner and gamely fended off $57 roughie Straight To Glory and $6.8 second favourite Lahore by a neck. It was the second straight double for Wong and the fourth consecutive winning meeting for the 10lb apprentice, who was teaming up with the horse that provided her with her first Hong Kong win back in September. Britney Wong grabs a double! ✌️ Cheval Valiant was the apprentice's first winner in Hong Kong last year and today she's back aboard @DJWhyteTrainer's galloper successfully at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 'He was my first win and I know him very well,' said Wong of the Douglas Whyte-trained Cheval Valiant. 'Thank you to Mr Whyte for putting me back on because I had to chase this ride, actually, and I'm happy that everything has gone well today and I have had another win. I'm very happy.' There was a huge sting in the tail post race, however, with Wong copping a three-day ban and HK$15,000 fine for careless riding in the early stages. Earlier, Wong got the card off to the perfect start in combination with Manfred Man Ka-leung for the second consecutive Sha Tin meeting when Ruby Sailing was another gate-to-wire winner in the Class Five Chak On Handicap (1,200m). Ruby Sailing is not for catching! 🔥 Apprentice Britney Wong drives the Starspangledbanner gelding to a first win for Manfred Man at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 It was a maiden victory at the 20th attempt for the son of Starspangledbanner, who showed tremendous early speed to lead from gate eight and never looked in danger of being caught. Wong got serious at the 400m pole and the pair surged into an unassailable lead, winning by one and a quarter lengths from fast-finishing $2.4 favourite King Oberon. Elsewhere, French ace Antoine Hamelin notched another timely winner thanks to Sky Prophet's upset win at $19.2 in the Class Five Chung On Handicap (1,400m). The Casper Fownes-trained four-year-old was made to work hard to get to the lead from barrier 13, but once there Hamelin controlled the fractions to a tee. Sky Prophet won't quit! 💥 Tough first win for the Caspar Fownes trainee at Sha Tin with @AntoineHamelin as he narrowly denies a rampaging Only U in a thriller... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 The pair looked vulnerable to Lapras turning in, but after fending off that rival in a protracted duel, they had just enough to scramble home ahead of the desperately unlucky $1.8 favourite Only U, who lashed home and only missed by a head after a torrid passage. 'It's nice to get a winner today – it's hot, but it's less hot when you win,' said Hamelin. 'I think the horse was in good form and didn't deserve to be so long in the odds. I believed in him [and] I thought he was a chance, the only concern was the draw. 'But he had a good start, he led, he controlled the race and he held that to the line.' Hamelin will depart Hong Kong and return to France at the end of this season, but he will be giving his all until the end of the season. 'I will just do my best to the end. It's hard to plan a target a month before I leave but I will just do my best and try to get as many winners as I can before I leave,' said the jockey.

O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn
O'Brien wins record-extending 11th Derby with Lambourn Jockey Wayne Lordan rides Lambourn to victory at the Epsom Derby. Photo: AFP Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien won a record-extending 11th Epsom Derby as Lambourn put up an astonishing performance to lead from start to finish on Saturday. For O'Brien it completed an extraordinary two days as Minnie Hauk won the Oaks on Friday and his Jan Brueghel won the other Group One race the Coronation Cup. It is not the first time the 55-year-old has achieved the Oaks/Derby double, last doing it in 2020 with Love (Oaks) and Serpentine. Jockey Wayne Lordan was never challenged in winning his first Derby on his ninth ride in the race considered to be the 'blue riband' of flat racing. None of the other fancied horses landed a blow and it was two outsiders that were closest at the finish – Lazy Griff (50/1) was second with 28/1 chance Tennessee Stud, trained by O'Brien's son Joseph, third. "I knew I'd gone a good gallop, his ears were pricked and I knew he had plenty left," said Lordan. "He's a horse that we've always felt stays well so I just thought anybody that gets to me will have to stay well and it'd be tough for them." Lordan's career was in doubt a couple of years ago after a dreadful fall in the Irish Derby in which he suffered a fractured leg and elbow. Saturday, though, represented his biggest ever victory. "It's one of the greatest races," said the 43-year-old. "For any jockey that wants to start out, all they ever want to do is win the Derby and I work for Aidan, Ballydoyle, Coolmore so I'm in a lucky position that I get to ask for a horse like this." Soul Rush back at the races for the first time since humbling Romantic Warrior
Soul Rush (outside) pips Romantic Warrior in the Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m) at Meydan in April. Photo: Kenneth Chan Two months after humbling Romantic Warrior in the Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m), Soul Rush headlines the 75th running of the Group One Yasuda Kinen (1,600m) at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday, contesting the prestigious contest for the fourth time. Third behind Romantic Warrior in last year's Yasuda Kinen, Soul Rush has posted two wins, two seconds and a third from his past five races and looks like he is improving with age. The seven-year-old son of Rulership will be ridden by Suguru Hamanaka. The 36-year-old jockey breezed the horse over 1,200m on May 29 in a time of 1 minute 21.5 seconds with a final 200m of 10.5 seconds. On June 4, under a trainer's assistant, Soul Rush worked solo up the Ritto hill course over 800m, switching gears to extend powerfully over the final 200m. His overall time over the slightly heavy going was 52.3 seconds with a final 200m of 11.8 seconds. 'He was pretty much ready last week,' trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said. 'So, I figured working alone up the hill this week was sufficient. His movement was good and it looks like he's in about the same condition as he has been for his races up to now.' Oh, my .... 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐋 𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐇 dramatically lowers the colours of 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐂 𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐑 in the @DPWorldUAE Dubai Turf! 🇯🇵#DWC25 | @emirates — Dubai Racing Club (@RacingDubai) April 5, 2025 Ikee, who won the Yasuda Kinen with Satono Aladdin in 2017, added: 'I really want him to win over the Tokyo 1,600m, which would help spur on his career at stud. He's in excellent shape – nowhere is he coming up short.' Seen as one of Soul Rush's biggest rivals is Jantar Mantar, a two-time Group One winner over 1,600m with victories in the 2023 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes for two-year-olds and the 2024 NHK Mile Cup for three-year-olds. Like runner-up Soul Rush, he contested the 2024 Group One Hong Kong Mile and, with added traffic problems in the stretch, finished 13th of 14 runners behind Voyage Bubble. On June 4, under an assistant to trainer Tomokazu Takano, Jantar Mantar clocked 11.7 seconds over the final furlong of his work. 'He looked fantastic and he used his body extremely efficiently,' Takano said. 'He has proven himself over the Tokyo 1,600m and it's a venue where he can run with confidence. No Golden Sixty this year! 😏 Second in the 2023 renewal, Voyage Bubble takes the @LONGINES Hong Kong Mile with @mcacajamez for Ricky Yiu! #HKIR | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) December 8, 2024 'There was too much time off before he went to Hong Kong and I've been putting the pressure on myself to help him get the results he deserves.' Three-time Group Two winner Sixpence returns from a seventh-placed finish in the Group One Osaka Hai (2,000m) under Takeshi Yokoyama. With all of the colt's five victories coming over 1,600m and 1,800m, the Osaka Hai proved a stretch at 2,000m and a return to 1,600m bodes well. The Kizuna colt looked in excellent condition in trackwork on May 28 working under Christophe Lemaire and, in final work on June 4, he worked with another horse on the flat. 'His movement was good,' trainer Sakae Kunieda said. 'He was in good shape for his last race too but he wasn't able to keep something in reserve for the finish. Lemaire knows this horse very well and they work well together.' Lemaire has ridden four of Sixpence's five career wins.
