Introduce New Legislation To Enable AI To Operate Independently

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- New legislation has to be introduced to enable artificial intelligence (AI) to operate independently, without having to subject itself to the laws of the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Although national laws protect a country's sovereignty, new legislation has to be enacted to transform new technologies.
"If you want to accept AI, then you cannot be thinking of sovereignty in the old school form," he said.
The prime minister said this during a panel session at the ASEAN-GCC Economic Forum 2025, titled 'The Intelligent Grid: Building Bridges Through Sovereign AI Collaboration' organised by Fortune here, today.
Anwar also noted that although some ASEAN and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have only recently begun substantive engagement with Malaysia, there is already a strong foundation of mutual understanding on critical issues.
'These include governance, international relations, and the adoption of new technologies such as digital transformation and alternative energy.
"When you have leaders having that sort of mindset, promoting new technological advancement and change, it could not have happened if we do not have this basic trust with one another,' he said.
He noted that such trust was instrumental in encouraging broader cooperation, with ASEAN and GCC getting onboard, and persuading China to align on certain positions.
He reiterated that these fundamentals are supported by the fact that ASEAN is relatively one of the most peaceful regions in the world, coupled with its status as the fastest-growing economy, while the GCC countries continue to achieve remarkable progress in renewable energy, digital transformation, and AI adoption.

Anwar highlights Prophet Ibrahim's example of sacrifice and dialogue in Aidiladha message

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his hari raya Aidiladha message, called upon Muslims nationwide to draw upon the lessons of sacrifice and noble values espoused by Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail. He said the example set by Prophet Ibrahim, in the form of the ultimate sacrifice by a father and prophet, also carries with it not just wisdom but also a model of 'dakwah' rooted in a culture of healthy and vibrant discourse. "Prophet Ibrahim did not engage in monologues but encouraged his congregation to solid dialogue and debate as a strategy to stimulate critiical thinking and appreciation of truth, nurturing a community of discerning minds and individuals with strong self-discipline," he said in a Facebook post today. Anwar also told all Muslims that while echoing the 'takbir' during Aidiladha, they should also not forget those who have sacrificed themselves to defend their cities and lands while enduring suffering, especially those in war-torn Gaza. "I pray for all Muslims in Malaysia and those performing their Haj to be granted good health and strength to face the challenges ahead, and that they remain humble in their supplications within the mercy and protection of the Almighty."

Ringgit ends marginally lower against greenback on stronger US$ index

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed marginally lower against the US dollar on Friday, amid a stronger US Dollar Index (DXY) as traders await US Nonfarm Payroll (NFP) data tonight, said an analyst. At 6 pm, the local note stood at 4.2270/2360 against the greenback, easing from Thursday's close of 4.2245/2295. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the DXY gained 0.14 per cent to 98.884 points as the markets await the NFP data tonight, expecting payrolls to increase by 126,000 in May, down from 177,000 in the previous month. "The ringgit versus the US dollar exchange oscillates around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today. Compared to yesterday, the ringgit depreciated slightly by 0.09 per cent to RM4.2310. "This week, the ringgit has performed well as it has gained 0.7 per cent,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said as US-China tariff tensions subside and foreign capital continues to flow into Malaysian debt and foreign exchange deposits, the ringgit is gaining stronger structural support. "Foreign investor interest remains strong, suggesting that any ringgit weakness driven by the US dollar is likely to attract buyers swiftly,' he said. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9324/9390 from Thursday's 2.9495/9531 and appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7212/7334 from 5.7301/7369. However, the ringgit eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8268/8371 from 4.8235/8292. The local currency also traded mostly higher against most of its ASEAN peers. It edged higher versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2862/2934 from 3.2881/2922, gained against the Thai baht to 12.9599/9947 from 12.9925/13.0138 and inched up vis-a-vis the Philippine peso to 7.58/7.60 from 7.59/7.61. However, it fell against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.5/260.2 from 259.3/259.8. - Bernama
