Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner rivalry is amazing for tennis
Alcaraz and Sinner, the world's top two players, contested their first grand slam final at the French Open – and it was an all-time classic.
Second seed Alcaraz came out on top after a five-hour, 29-minute marathon, the 22-year-old saving three championship points in the fourth set and winning after a tie-break in the fifth.
It was Alcaraz's second Roland Garros title, his fifth at grand slams, and means he and Italian world number one Sinner have shared the last six majors.
Anyone who feared men's tennis would struggle to fill the void left by the retirements of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and – in the not-too-distant future – Novak Djokovic, can rest easy.
'For the sport it's something amazing to have these players after Roger and Rafa – and Novak is still playing, of course – but this kind of rivalry that they have,' said former world number one Ferrero.
'Having these two guys fighting for big trophies, I think we have to be very happy about it in the sport of tennis.
'For them, for sure it's something that they raise their level every time that they go on the court.
'They know they have to play unbelievable tennis to beat the other guy and it's something that is going to help for sure each player to raise the level even more.'
Curiously, Alcaraz won major title number five at exactly the same age as his idol Nadal was when he won his fifth, in 2008 at Wimbledon; 22 years, one month and three days.
Nadal, of course, went on to collect 22 grand slam crowns including 14 at Roland Garros, and was honoured at this year's tournament following his retirement.

The coincidence was not lost on Ferrero, although he was keen to avoid too many comparisons between his fellow Spaniards.
'I think it's amazing,' added Ferrero. 'The same grand slams at the same age at the same day, it's something that looks unreal.
'It's something very curious. But we don't think too much about it. We try to write his own way.'

Man Utd set increased Alejandro Garnacho asking price as five clubs eye star
Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho has been told to find a new club as the Red Devils attempt to bring in a significant transfer fee for the Argentina international Manchester United want £70million for unwanted winger Alejandro Garnacho this summer, with a number of clubs interested in the Argentina international's signature. Garnacho had previously been slapped with a £60m asking price when Napoli appeared to be the dominant club in the market. Now, the 20-year-old has a queue of sides looking to be kept aware of his situation. Napoli are joined by Chelsea, who were also linked with a move in January, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Erik ten Hag's Bayer Leverkusen, according to the Independent. Garnacho offers a prime chance for United to bring in a profitable fee and to provide a boost to the team's outlook under profit and sustainability rules as a result of coming through the club's academy after signing from Atletico Madrid as a 16-year-old. The winger has been told to find a new club by boss Ruben Amorim. That came after Garnacho had vented his frustration at not playing a more prominent role in United's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. In the aftermath of that loss, the attacker hinted that an exit was potentially on the cards. 'It's hard for everyone," he said after the game. "The season was s***, both now losing the final tonight, and in the league, where we didn't beat anyone, that's the truth. "Up until the final, I've played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don't know. I'm going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens after.' Garnacho was axed for the Red Devils' final Premier League squad of the season afterwards. Amorim suggested he would still be seen in United colours once again, though the side did quickly travel for post-season matches in Asia. The Old Trafford rejected a £40m bid from Napoli in January when Garnacho was tipped for an exit. But the Italian side and Chelsea are said to have been broached about reigniting their interest. Despite plenty of suitors in Europe, Garnacho could yet be presented with an offer from Saudi Arabia. Al-Nassr have discussed the ace as an alternative target to Liverpool winger Luis Diaz The side are unlikely too have too many quibbles about meeting United's asking price, while linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo once again could prove tempting for Garnacho. After having his own future speculated upon, Ronaldo confirmed he is set to stay at Al-Nassr in the immediate future despite his contract being due to expire.
