Standing in the Shadows of Giants review – Lucie Barât looks back at spiral during Libertines' rise

The Guardian4 days ago
There are many urgent topics demanding our attention on the fringe. Having a famous brother is not high among them. Yet that, initially at least, is the primary hang-up of Lucie Barât.
Many of us would be delighted to see our siblings prosper, but she was too preoccupied with her own bumpy career to be anything but envious when her kid brother hit the big time. He is Carl Barât of the Libertines, who seemed to go overnight from borrowing her guitar to being a music-paper darling.
Perhaps we should leave aside the impression that the average Traverse audience member knows more about the Second Earl of Rochester, the Marquis de Sade and fellow libertines than they do about Pete Doherty. There is something odd about a celebrity memoir that has to begin with the performer explaining who the celebrity is.
The bigger problem is that, aside from one or two backstage recollections about the band, her story is so familiar. Having trained as an actor, she graduates with an exaggerated sense of her own worth and is soon working in restaurants. Like every other actor, she skips shifts to audition, goes for demeaning jobs and performs badly in front of the casting director. And like every other actor, she winds up in poorly attended fringe productions of plays by Oscar Wilde.
Even when she gets serious with her sorry tale of addiction, the material is unsurprising. She resists rehab, rolls her eyes at group therapy and spends years getting clean. Clearly, it was a struggle, but there is little to distinguish her experience from any other addict's memoir.
Perhaps sensing the show could do with some more bite, she tries to link her increasing self-awareness with the challenge of sexual acceptance in society at large. It is not enough to elevate a pleasant, but inward-looking show.

I spotted my pregnant pal's fiancé in Bonnie Blue documentary & exposed his dirty secret but he called ME a homewrecker

A WOMAN who spotted her heavily pregnant friend's fiancé in the Bonnie Blue documentary was labelled a "homewrecker" by the man when she exposed his dirty secret. She explained that she wanted to tune into the Channel 4 show - titled 1,000 Men And Me: The Bonnie Blue Story - to see if there's a "human side" to the OnlyFans creator. 5 5 One thing the documentary covered was Bonnie's disgusting but record-breaking event, during which she claims to have had sex with 1,057 men in 12 hours. And while the programme was shocking enough, it became even more so for the woman when she realised she recognised one of the men who took part in the vile stunt. While she "didn't believe it at first", upon a second watch she realised it was "undeniably" him - with his tattoos confirming his identity. She and some other friends who had also seen the documentary were then left in a difficult situation, and spent hours whether or not to tell their other pal, considering she's eight months pregnant with his baby. "In my opinion, if someone cheats like that it's not their first time and I rather lose her friendship for telling straight away than her finding out I knew and hid it," she said. "Because let's be real - when you tell someone news like that there's a huge chance they'll hate you not the cheater." Despite her fears, she eventually decided to break the news to her friend. "The minute she looked at the picture she knew it was him and broke down," she sighed. "I expected her to be angry at me but she thanked me for being honest as multiple people have hinted that she should watch the documentary instead of being up front like I was." Following her shocking situation, she drove her friend to her mum's house, where she apparently confronted her man about his part in Bonnie's foul stunt. Viewers outraged at Bonnie Blue claiming she is a 'community worker' as she sleeps with 1,000 men in explosive new doc "He has since been blowing up my phone calling me a evil little homewrecker who ruined not only his life - calling me out on social media for trying ruin his relationship and wanting his unborn daughter to grow up without a dad," she continued. Not only that, but her other friends are angry with her for telling the pregnant woman straight away "and not waiting till she had the baby incase the stress would cause issues to her health". In an update on the Reddit post, she admitted the man wasn't the only one from their friend group to have taken part in Bonnie's 12-hour long sex session - her own boyfriend of three years was another. "I don't want to hear his explanation I feel so humiliated and physically sick," she said, before adding that "another friend's husband" also took part. In response to one comment on the post questioning the timing of the different events, she added: "He was part of the 1000 Bonnie blue line up in January they got engaged on Christmas Day and my friend would have found out around January she was pregnant (she didn't tell us till she was 3 months pregnant). "I really hope he was decent enough to be careful for my friend's sake." Who is Bonnie Blue? Born in May 1999, Bonnie - whose real name is Tia Billinger - grew up in a small Derbyshire village, and attended the Friesland School in the village of Sandiacre. She has two half-siblings - a sister and a brother - who have always remained out of the public eye. She never knew her biological father, and considers stepfather Nicholas Elliott her dad. Bonnie also became something of a dance star in her local area, and competed in the British Street Dance Championships alongside her sister back in 2015. She also had a part-time job at Poundstretcher as a teenager. After school, she began working in recruitment. In October 2022, Bonnie married Oliver Davidson, who she had started dating when she was just 15. Once they were married, they moved to Australia, where Bonnie continued working in recruitment. However, it was in Australia that she decided to pursue a different line of work, and tried her luck as a 'cam girl' - crediting Oliver for giving her the confidence to enter the adult entertainment world. She quickly made a name for herself in the industry, and was soon making £5,000 a week. But while her work life was going from strength to strength, her relationship was crumbling, and she and Oliver split after almost a decade together. She moved over to OnlyFans following her cam girl success, and once again found fame on there. She quickly became a favourite on the site, especially thanks to her "niche" of sleeping with young male students - such as when she bedded 158 students during Nottingham Trent University's freshers week in September 2024. Bonnie is now estimated to be worth £3 million, and makes around £600,000 a month on OnlyFans. Her family are also supportive of her work, with mum Sarah Billinger even claiming she's her daughter's PA, and helps clean up after Bonnie's events - as well as handing out condoms to young clients. In January 2025, Bonnie claimed to have broken the world record for the most amount of sex in 12 hours, after apparently sleeping with 1,057 men from 1pm to 1am at a secret London event. "Your friend needs to be tested ASAP," someone else pointed out. "A lot of STIs are dangerous for the fetus, and the sooner they know, the more they can do." "Luckily they test for those during pregnancy but if she contracted them DURING her pregnancy they may have missed them," another agreed. The shocking documentary revealed behind-the-scenes footage for Bonnie's desperate challenge where she aimed to sleep with 1,000 men in 12 hours - with Channel 4 airing scenes of her naked and having sex with various men. Viewers were left raging as they watched the X-rated moment and took to the regulator to complain about the explicit scenes. In total the documentary received 160 complaints. Bonnie - real name Tia Billinger - also referred to herself as a " community worker" in the show, as she said she sees herself as someone who is teaching men how to have better sex. In the same breath, she argued that she's 'not a world educator' and can't be held responsible for the culture of sexualisation our children are growing up in. 5 5

The truth behind Andy Carroll's split with Lou Teasdale: Makeup artist dumped ex-Premier League star after string of booze-fuelled blazing rows - and he flew by private jet to Ibiza to BEG her for second chance

Lou Teasdale has hit back at suggestions that Andy Carroll broke up with her after becoming fed up with her high maintenance behaviour - and claims that she dumped him, the Daily Mail can reveal. Sources close to former Premier League star Andy, 36, said he ended the year-long romance with influencer Lou, 41, this week after becoming tired of her following a string of booze-fuelled rows. But now furious friends of the influencer have claimed that Andy was so desperate to save the relationship that he chartered a private jet to race to Ibiza yesterday in a last-ditch attempt to win her round. The extraordinary intervention came just hours after news emerged that the couple had split after 12 months of dating. A source told the Daily Mail: 'It was Lou who ended her relationship with Andy, she walked away a few days ago, it was very much her choice to end their romance. 'She isn't interested in pointing the finger or blaming him and hoped to deal with their split in private, before he blocked her on Instagram and deleted their photos together. Sources close to former Premier League star Andy said he ended the year-long romance with influencer Lou this week after becoming tired of her following a string of booze-fuelled rows 'Lou is very upset by how everything has played out and the arguments between them were especially difficult for her to go through. 'However, Andy wants Lou back and flew to Ibiza via private jet on Tuesday just to find her, even though he has no idea where she's staying. 'He will think it's a romantic gesture but for Lou, she's unimpressed and just wants to be away with her family, she's not interested in any of his attempts at a reconciliation now. 'All she has done all year is love and support Andy, her feelings haven't gone away, but Lou has to protect herself now and ending the relationship is the only way to move forward.' While Andy has removed all trace of Lou from his Instagram, the celebrity makeup artist still has a string of images featuring the footballer which demonstrates how close their relationship was on her profile. Andy and Lou started dating last year after the ex-Liverpool and Newcastle player separated from his wife, TOWIE's Billi Mucklow, 37, with whom he has three children. Reality star Billi is currently holidaying in Mallorca with her family and on Tuesday posted an image of her wearing a bikini by the pool, prompting praise from her former TOWIE co-stars. Andy married Billi in June 2022 as their children Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel watched on but the couple announced their divorce two years later. In May 2022, Andy, who also has two children from a previous relationship, was pictured 'passed out' between not one, but two blonde women during his stag do, causing upset and distress for Billi. Lou Teasdale declined to comment when approached by the Daily Mail.

Sweet moment oblivious 'christening' guests learn they're actually at a secret wedding

Oblivious christening guests were left in tears after it was revealed they were actually attending a wedding. When Joe, 27, and Tori Taylor, 25, from Studley, Warwickshire, invited their friends and family to the christening of their six-month-old son Billy, only a handful of people knew about their heartwarming planned surprise. The disguised groom told their guests that the Billy's mother was 'running late' - when in fact the bride was just preparing to walk down the aisle in Studley Parish Church, Warwickshire. Then 10 minutes after the 95 guests had taken their seats, Tori walked down the aisle to their shock in an radiant wedding dress. The couple came up with the idea to combine their son's special day with their wedding day while planning Billy's celebration, saying it 'just felt right'. They have since said the moment was 'magical' with Tori revealing the audible gasp when loved ones saw her walk down the aisle gave her 'goosebumps'. The couple revealed only their parents, the best man, and the maid of honour knew about their secret plan. Tori said: 'We told them our idea right from the start, they were all very supportive of us getting married this way, they loved the idea of the surprise.' She added: 'It wasn't easy (to keep the secret) but no one was asking questions which helped. 'Our friends and family really had no idea. Only one friend joked that we might be "the type to do a surprise wedding" but otherwise no one suspected a thing. 'The atmosphere in the church at that moment they all realised, is something we'll carry with us forever.' Joe and Tori have told they came up with the surprise whilst planning their son Billy's christening. They had been planning to tie the knot ever since Joe popped the question and said combining the moment 'felt right'. Joe said: 'We were already planning our son's christening for July when the idea came to us - why not get married during the same ceremony. 'We've always wanted to be married simply to be united as a family, without the stress or fuss that can come with a traditional wedding. 'We decided to keep it a surprise, only telling our parents, the maid of honour, and the best man. The couple, from Studley, came up with the idea to combine their son's special day with their wedding day whilst planning Billy's celebration, saying it 'just felt right' 'The people who would be there to celebrate our son were the very people we'd want to witness our marriage - so it just felt right.' Though to the shock of the newlyweds, they have revealed that planning the event in this way was 'surprisingly easy' only taking them three months setting the date for July 19 2025. Tori said: 'No guests were expecting a wedding so there was zero pressure and no set expectations. It turned into a relaxed, stress-free experience which was nice.' When the day arrived, Joe welcomed guests to the church as if it was just a christening, but was coming up with 'excuses' for why Tori was running late. Then 10 minutes after the 95 guests had taken their seats, Tori walked the aisle with her dad, Bill. Recalling the moment Tori said it was 'magical'. She said: 'It was honestly more magical than we ever imagined. The audible gasp from our family and friends gave me goosebumps. 'Our friends and family were shocked in the best possible way - they were emotional and so happy for us. 'But most of all our grandparents' reactions meant everything to us. Having them there on such a meaningful day was incredibly special, and seeing their surprise and emotion is something we'll never forget.' The couple worked alongside wedding videographer Karl Mitchell, 32, to capture the emotional moment. Karl, from Stockport, in Manchester, said: 'Seeing that moment when the penny dropped for the guests and the emotion just filled the room - you can't script that. 'Also knowing that it was so important to Tori and Joe to have those reactions on film made it even more special as the person capturing it all. 'Keeping it a secret was definitely a challenge but also really exciting. 'A few guests were curious on the day about what I was doing, so I had to think on my feet and when they asked me, I said I was filming promo material for the church.' 'I have filmed a lot of special moments over the years but this was the first time I had been part of a surprise wedding like this. 'The ceremony is always quite heartfelt anyway but this one was something else. It honestly gave me goosebumps.' Following the wedding Billy was christened and the family enjoyed celebrations at their reception. Karl has since posted the clip onto social media page, Mitchell Films, and it has since clocked over 600,000 likes. He said the reaction to the video has been 'overwhelming'. He said: 'I have had messages from people halfway across the world saying it moved them to tears.' One person commented on the video saying: 'I'm not sure what is more beautiful, the fact that they are getting married or the fact so many people turned up for them.' Another said: 'Can you image being so deeply loved by that many people? They will carry that forever.' One other person commented: 'Crying for internet strangers.'
