Proteas fans dare to dream with longish odds
Sports betting sites are leaning heavily towards Australia over South Africa ahead of the T20I series between the two countries starting this weekend.
The Aussies are at 1.47 to win Sunday's first match of the series, with South Africa quoted at 2.70.
The Proteas have been sent to the unfamiliar and remote northern Australian cities of Darwin, Cairns and Mackay on their T20 and ODI tour and perhaps the bookmakers reckon they'll feel isolated and disorientated.
There's home-ground advantage and then there's home-ground advantage in the platteland. Imagine the Aussies being sent to play in Upington, Uitenhage and Ulundi.
The respective odds for next year's T20 World Cup – on neutral soil in India – are a contrast: Australia 5.45 to win; SA 5.65.
However, avid South African fans, eternal optimists that they are, will be delighted by the opportunity to make some bucks from the attractive bets on offer.

For example, Betway has Aussie batter Travis Head as the 6.25 favourite to be Player of the Match in Darwin on Sunday, with the shortest-priced Protea being Ryan Rickleton at 11.50. Aiden Markram – hero of the recent World Test Championship final at Lord's – is available at 12.00, while ace fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is a 17.00 shot to be Player of the Match.
Several other categories might appeal to patriotic Saffers.
Team with the Top Batter: Australia 1.50, SA 2.40. Team with the Top Bowler: Australia 1.60, SA 2.20.
An unusual one that catches the eye involves batting prodigy Lhuan-Dre Pretorius. Will he score 50 or more? Yes 4.65, No 1.16.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius soaks up Proteas wisdom as he prepares for Aussie hostility
Proteas batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius is excited to learn from senior players, including Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, as he goes on tour for the first time with the full-strength team in Australia. Pretorius, 19, has already made a name for himself in South Africa, having made light work of domestic cricket on graduating from schoolboy cricket. For his dominance in first-class cricket this past season, the left-handed batter earned the Cricket South Africa Four-Day Series Player of the Year award at Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg last week. The youngster has already donned the Proteas colours as he earned his Test and T20I debuts in Zimbabwe last month, where he also impressed with 150 on his Test debut and one half-century in T20Is. His numbers have seen him earn a spot in the Proteas' full-strength team that is in Australia for three T20Is and three ODIs starting later this week. Pretorius is on tour with Proteas household names, including T20I captain Aiden Markram, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and Temba Bavuma, who will join the squad for the ODI series. 'The media and the stuff that happens off the field, I don't really care about that stuff because I don't really look into that kind of stuff, but the on-the-field chirping, it does get me going,' said Pretorius. 'I do enjoy that quite a bit because it keeps me in the fight, and it just gives me another reason not to give my wicket away. I don't really care about what's going on off the field in terms of other people's perspectives and that kind of stuff. 'You don't want to overthink it. At the end of the day, it's bat against ball. It's not Lhuan-dre against another player, it's bat against ball and that helps you a lot. You do your thing, there's a reason you're playing there and there's a reason you got there. So just backing the processes, backing what's got you there. That's my mindset and how I do it.' The T20I series is set to run from Sunday to August 16, while the ODI series will run from August 19 to 24.

Springboks: All Rugby Championship fixtures, kick off times
The Springboks will re-assemble in Johannesburg on Sunday, where they will turn their full attention to the first of two matches of the Rugby Championship against Australia at Ellis Park next Saturday. The second Test against the Wallabies will be hosted at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday 23 August. 'It was very productive, and we hope that it will benefit us as we prepare to face a psyched-up and physical Australian team following the British & Irish Lions Series. 'We then have a tour to New Zealand, and face Argentina, and both those teams pose their own threats, so hopefully we can build on these standards.'
