Diver dies during work to recover sunken superyacht Bayesian
LondoncTypeface:> A diver who was working on the recovery of tech tycoon Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht has died during underwater work in Sicily, it is understood.
The man, believed to be a diver for Dutch firm SMIT Salvage, died on Friday and an investigation will look into what happened, the PA news agency has learned.
Billionaire entrepreneur Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were among seven people who died when the 56-metre Bayesian sank off the coast of the Italian island on August 19.
About 70 specialist personnel had been mobilised to the fishing village Porticello from across Europe to work on the recovery operation, which began earlier this week.
Work to move the Bayesian into an upright position and lift it to the surface was due to begin in under two weeks, subject to suitable weather and sea conditions. (PA Media/dpa)

UK wage growth slows
Agencies Wage growth in Britain decelerated significantly, while unemployment climbed to its highest level in almost four years during the three months leading up to April, according to official data on Tuesday that could prompt the Bank of England (BoE) to adopt a less cautious stance on further interest rate cuts. Pay growth excluding bonuses slowed to 5.2%, its weakest since the three months to September, and down more than expected from 5.5% in January to March this year. The jobless rate rose to 4.6% from 4.5%, its highest since the three months to May 2021, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The April data was the first since employers were hit by a 25 billion pound ($34 billion) rise in social security contributions, which came into force at the start of the month, as well as a 6.7% increase in the minimum wage. The downturn appeared to gather pace in May, according to separate tax office data which showed a slump of 109,000 in the number of employees on company payrolls, the most since May 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bank of Englandwhich is expected to keep rates on hold at next week's meeting – has been trying to gauge if inflation pressures in Britain's labor market are easing sufficiently for it to continue cutting interest rates at its current quarterly pace. 'While the bar for the Bank of England to speed up rate cuts seems to be set fairly high, this data helps cement cuts in August and November,' James Smith, economist at Dutch bank ING, said. Sterling fell three-quarters of a cent against the U.S. dollar, two-year gilt yields dropped to a two-week low, and interest rate futures priced in a greater chance of two further rate cuts this year following the data.

UK aims to ‘deepen' India ties
London: British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will seek to deepen UK-India economic ties as he visits New Delhi this weekend, saying Britain's recently agreed trade deal with the country is 'just the start of our ambitions.' Trade and migration will be at the top of the agenda for the Foreign Secretary's trip, during which he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar. The Foreign Office said Lammy, who was expected in New Delhi on Saturday, would also raise 'the recent escalation in tensions following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, and how the welcomed sustained period of peace can be best supported in the interests of stability in the region.' Pakistan and India agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire last month after rising hostilities between the two nuclear-armed rivals followed a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. Ahead of the visit, Lammy said: 'Signing a free trade agreement is just the start of our ambitions - we're building a modern partnership with India for a new global era.' (PA Media/dpa)
