Man Utd given hope in Benjamin Sesko transfer race as RB Leipzig boss provides update after Newcastle's £70m bid

MANCHESTER UNITED are not out of the race for Benjamin Sesko despite Newcastle's £70million bid.
The Toon wasted no time in their pursuit of the striker as they immediately met RB Leipzig's asking price.

Newcastle offered the Bundesliga side an initial £65.5m with £4.3m coming in potential add-ons.
But reports by Sky Germany claim the deal is not done yet and more negotiations are scheduled for tonight with both clubs.
Sesko, 22, is said to have a gentleman's agreement with RB Leipzig that he can leave if they receive a good enough offer.
And with talks ongoing, Sesko was left out of their pre-season friendly against Atalanta today.
RB Leipzig chief Marcel Schafer was asked about the player's future and he said: "We won't go into detail on that, but when I say that several clubs have shown strong interest and have made approaches, it's obvious what has happened.'
Sesko is said to be weighing up a move to either Newcastle or Man Utd after talks with his representatives.
Interest from St James' Park comes amid star striker Alexander Isak looking to force an exit to Liverpool.
The Swede is currently training alone at his former club Real Sociedad after not joining his team-mates on the club's pre-season tour.

Isak has his heart set on a switch to Liverpool despite them already splashing £79m on Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike this summer.
The Premier League champions had a £110m bid for Isak turned down by Newcastle yesterday.
They are demanding a staggering £150m for their main man.
Meanwhile, Man Utd's Sesko interest is being driven by director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who previously worked at RB Leipzig.
The club are desperate to sign a striker after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee managed just seven league goals between them last season.
Sesko was on fire in the Bundesliga, finding the back of the net 13 times in 33 games last term.
Arsenal were interested in the Slovenian but are now out the running after snapping up Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for £63.5m.

Bruno Fernandes responds to new transfer offer to leave Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has received a new offer to leave Manchester United after rejecting a lucrative move to Al Hilal earlier in the summer. Al Hilal offered the Old Trafford captain a deal worth £200m over three years back in June but saw their advances rebuffed. 'There was an opportunity,' confirmed Fernandes, who has been United's most important player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. 'The [Al-Hilal] president called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me. I spoke to coach [Ruben] Amorim. He asked me not to go. 'Manchester United didn't want to sell me. They don't need the money. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.' Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. United fans were mostly relieved to keep hold of their talisman, although some suggested it would be wise to cash in given Al Hilal were offering over £100m. Club legend Paul Scholes was even of the opinion that Fernandes should be sold given the numbers on the table. A few months after rejecting Al Hilal, Fernandes has received a new transfer approach from fellow Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. Reports in Portugal said Al Nassr were even optimistic of signing Fernandes given their head coach Jorge Jesus previously managed the midfielder at Sporting and the fact they have Cristiano Ronaldo on their books. However, the Daily Mail say Fernandes is 'unlikely to reverse' his decision to stay at Manchester United and is fully focused on the upcoming Premier League season. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also says Fernandes is 'fully involved' in Manchester United's project and wants to help bring the glory days back to Old Trafford. United endured one of their worst-ever campaigns last season, finishing just 15th in the Premier League and losing a drab Europa League final to Tottenham. Fernandes, who has made 290 appearances for Manchester United, is currently with his teammates in the United States ahead of their pre-season friendly against Everton on Sunday night. More Trending Discussing his future at the club at the start of the pre-season tour, Fernandes said: 'I will be here until the club tells me it is time to leave. 'I am available to make the club have great days again. The day the club thinks I am too much, or it is time to leave, football is like that and you never know. 'If the club thinks it is time to leave, because they want to make some money, that is what it is and football is like that sometimes.' Ruben Amorim's side face Fiorentina at Old Trafford in their final pre-season fixture before kick-starting their Premier League campaign on August 17 against Arsenal. Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes 'is engaged to her long-term girlfriend Louise Cullen three years after coming out'

Dame Kelly Holmes has reportedly got engaged to her girlfriend Louise Cullen, three years after publicly coming out as gay. The Olympic legend, 55, best known for her historic double gold in both the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Athens Games, reportedly popped the question to Louise earlier this year, sealing their love story that began during lockdown. A source told The Sun: 'It's a lovely happy ending after she spent years thinking she was going to be arrested for having gay relationships while she was in the Army. 'It was at a time when homosexuality was still illegal for serving troops.' Kelly met Louise, a professional massage therapist, in 2021 after connecting through an online fitness community launched during the pandemic, and what started as casual chats over shared workouts soon turned into something more serious. The couple have kept much of their relationship private, but Kelly opened up in 2023, revealing how happy and supported she felt in love, saying: 'She loves me for me. I'm just happy.' Daily Mail have contacted Kelly's representatives for comment. The report came as Kelly also make a loved-up appearance alongside her partner Louise at Brighton Pride on Saturday. In July, Kelly won an Attitude Pride Europe Icon Award. At the time she wrote: 'To be recognised for what I now stand for is incredible. 'You have no idea how much my life has changed over the past three years, unless you have heard me talk at one of my speaking engagements (to those that have…hi) It's life changing to be able to breathe and feel happy (most days) 'It's like I am living a different one. One where I see people and they see me. One where I am in the present, attentive to anyone I meet rather than on edge about what they think. One where I have met a huge amount of people that I sincerely can now say are friends. 'I am reminded everyday from hearing stories from men, women, LGBTQIA communities, mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, business people, widows, mature people, younger people…you get the picture?! 'that what I now speak about and how I have been honest and open about my journey has given them strength and courage to either realise that understanding can support loved ones, friends, family members, colleagues and/or acceptance save lives!' 'I am proud of who I am and can't wish things had been different because that's detrimental, but I can live everyday being my true self. Kelly added: 'Thanks for all of you that have been incredible loving, supportive, positive, open and honest to me. Love ya'. Dame Kelly has been very open about keeping her sexuality a secret for over 30 years. Appearing on Loose Women three years ago, the Olympic champion, emotionally spoke about her battle to hide her sexuality when she was a teenager due to a ban on gay, lesbian and bisexual people serving in the British Army. She said: 'I joined the army when I was 17, you get rules, it's discipline and you couldn't have a same-sex relationship and I realised quickly I was gay. 'What people forget is during my army career I became a world class athlete. I would have loved to have been me 30 years ago and live my life, but I couldn't.' 'An older generation have fought for this moment so younger generations can come out freely. I never told anyone in sport, no one talked about being gay.' Gay and lesbian citizens have been only been allowed to serve openly in the Her Majesty's Armed Forces since 2000. The fight to allow homosexuality in the British Armed Forces started with a legal battle. Until 2000, around 200 servicemen and women a year were dismissed from the Armed Forces for homosexuality. Some have since won compensation. Kelly, already a successful young athlete at schools and youth Olympics level, turned down a sports scholarship in the United States to join the army as a teenager. She became Corporal Kelly Holmes, with a new dream set of being a personal training instructor. But sporting development continued during her time in the armed forces through success the Army Championships, though Holmes also had success in their judo and volleyball tournaments. After winning the UK Civilian Championships as Corporal Holmes, Kelly qualified for the 1993 World Championships in the process, leaving her having to balance her armed forces and athletics work. She eventually left the army to become a full-time athlete in 1997. Kelly also detailed the impact of her mother Pam Norman's death on her decision to come out. Pam died in 2017 from myeloma. Kelly said: 'I haven't been able to say anything for 34 years, when my mum passed away over 4 years ago, I knew I needed to be so it's taken 4 years to know it's right'. 'At one point I'm going to die and I don't want my family and friends at my funeral saying she couldn't be herself'.

Tottenham need to find a way to capitalise on legacy of trailblazer Son

Just as opposing fans in the Premier League have experienced feelings of dread over the past decade when Son Heung-min picked up the ball on the edge of their area, there had been a summer of worry among his millions of followers in Asia that his time in England was coming to an end. As the South Korean's legs slowed last season, reports of a move elsewhere gathered pace. His 10 years at Tottenham may have ended with a trophy, the Europa League in May, but the legacy had been in place for some time. The 33-year-old has changed the way Asian players are perceived around the world and much more besides. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career,' an emotional Son said at a Seoul press conference on Saturday before Sunday's pre-season exhibition against Newcastle. 'Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision. I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.' Son has been the pride of Asian football for years, the first player from the continent to become a genuine Premier League star, a legend at his club. There had been compatriot Park Ji-sung who won titles and respect during seven years at Manchester United, but he was never an automatic starter and, unfairly for a technically excellent and intelligent player, old Three Lungs was praised more for his running, work-rate and stamina. Shinji Kagawa looked like he may reach the next level at Old Trafford but was soon back in Germany. So it was Son, signed from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, who went on to appear on billboards in north London, Seoul and a lot of cities in between as one of the best-known faces of the world's best-known league. There were 173 goals in 454 competitive games, including the 2020 Puskás Award for that strike against Burnley. In the 2021-2022 season, he scored 23 in the league, sharing the golden boot with Mohamed Salah, another milestone for Asian football. When Harry Kane left Spurs for Bayern Munich, Son stayed and was made captain, and while last season was a relative struggle, for team and player, it ended on a high. Some thought he may stay for one more crack at the Champions League, after doing so much to help Spurs to the final in 2019, but it was not to be. In 2022, I went to Tottenham's sparkling training ground on the northern outskirts of the capital to present the Chuncheon-born native with the Best Footballer in Asia award, a trophy handed out by Titan Sports in China, a country that is not known for its love of Korean football but one that has the utmost respect for Elder Brother Son. He had received the prize in all but three of the 12 years since it became a thing. We discussed our favourite food from his homeland while he tried not to laugh at the Korean language attempts of Hugo Lloris in the next room as the goalkeeper recorded a video message to fans in the Land of the Morning Calm before the club's visit a few weeks later. Tottenham are there once more. 'It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain,' the new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank said. 'If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.' And an emotional one. His Premier League performances will be missed in Korea, not least by those bars that hang huge televisions in their windows, showing Tottenham games with a tiny image of his smiling face in the top corner of the screen to show their idol is on the field. Playing time is a big thing for Korean fans after most of Son's predecessors struggled. Park Chu-young joined Arsenal in 2011 but managed just seven league minutes in the red and white corner of north London, inactivity that caused some resentment back home. Son's experience was the opposite. Playing regularly, becoming a star for so long and then captain at a major club also helped grow Tottenham's global fanbase. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion While European estimates of their fans in Asia are unconfirmed, it was claimed in 2022 that there were more than 12 million Spurs supporters in Korea. Whatever the accuracy of that number, there has never been such a popular player – Son has advertised more than 30 brands in his homeland – to play in such a popular league for such a length of time. Tottenham will need to find a way to build on his legacy in Korea and the rest of Asia. For now, though, they just have to find a way to live without Son on the pitch. And fans of the player on the world's biggest continent will also have to get used to Premier League action without the forward. A Chinese journalist once said that Son showed the world that Asia can produce a player as exciting as any from Africa or South America. As legacies go, that's pretty good.
