Murray hailed as Scottish tennis trailblazer after Wimbledon defeat
Jamie Murray was hailed as an icon of Scottish tennis after losing a boisterous battle of Britain encounter at Wimbledon.
The Scot, 39, combined with Emily Appleton in the mixed doubles event but suffered a straight sets defeat against Glasgow's Maia Lumsden and partner David Stevenson.

Murray, a joint British record-holding seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion, was knocked out of the men's doubles alongside Rajeev Ram on Thursday evening and unable to bounce back in the mixed as he and Appleton, 25, lost 6-3 6-4 on a packed-out Court 16.
Murray was crowned mixed doubles king of SW19 in both 2007 and 2017 and sits joint top with Virginia Wade as the most decorated doubles player in British tennis history.
Fellow Scot Lumsden, 27, has grown up idolising the former world No.1 and loved sharing a court with him in front of watching friends and family.
'We know Jamie really well and everything he has achieved,' said Lumsden, who lost alongside Harriet Dart in the women's doubles the previous day.

'He's obviously someone I've always looked up to a lot - he's had an amazing career, won a lot of Slams, so it's very cool to be on the same court as him and play against him.
'I respect him a lot for all he's done for Scottish and British tennis.'
The match was played in front of a raucous SW19 atmosphere on a sunbaked Friday afternoon in south-west London.
And Stevenson, 26, said: 'There was a group of lads I didn't know would be there I used to played football with, who were loud and had a few drinks.
'It's a relaxed environment on mixed side - to get the opportunity to continue playing at this place is what we want to do.'

Elsewhere, Henry Patten kept his men's doubles title defence with Harri Heliovaara alive with a 7-6(6) 6-3 victory over British pair Billy Harris and Marcus Willis.
But he was unable to progress in the mixed event alongside Olivia Nicholls, going down 6-3 6-4 against Asia Muhammad and Andres Molteni.
Patten, 29, captured Wimbledon hearts last summer with an unexpected men's doubles triumph alongside experienced Finn Heliovaara, 36.
And speaking after navigating his way to the third round, he said: 'We've definitely got a little bit of work to do – but we stuck together as a team and got over the line.

'They're good signs that we were able to come together under pressure at the tournament and not get too daunted by that.'

Freddie Potts assumed it would be a routine catch-up when he received a call from West Ham United's sporting director Mark Noble but the nature of their conversation turned out to be very different. In March, Noble informed the 21-year-old midfielder that West Ham wanted to offer him a long-term deal; to reflect his development during successful loan spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth and ensure his future is in east London. Advertisement Potts was named player of the year for Wycombe Wanderers in 2023-24, when he also helped them reach the final of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, which they lost to Peterborough United. Potts was then an ever-present figure for Portsmouth under manager John Mousinho last season and played an important role in securing the club's Championship status. The midfielder signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at West Ham, which expires in 2029, with the option of a further year. 'I've been at West Ham since I was five, I grew up in the area and I've wanted to become a West Ham player my whole life,' Potts told the club's official website in March. 'My goal is to break into the first team and show what I can do at the highest level.' Being the son of academy coach and club legend Steve Potts brings huge expectations but Potts Jr does not expect an easy ride. On the contrary, staff have been drawn to his application and determination. Potts made his first-team debut against Dinamo Zagreb in 2021. He has not played a competitive game for the club since featuring in their Conference League last-16 victory over Cypriot side AEK Larnaca in 2023 but Noble believes that could change fairly soon. The sporting director recalls watching Potts playing in West Ham's under-11s when he was club captain, and noticed his 'enthusiasm and love for the game'. 'His dad is a legend at the club but he's not going to play for West Ham because of that,' Noble told West Ham's website earlier this year. 'He's going to play for West Ham because he's got the qualities and the ability and the mindset to play. 'I truly believe he can play for us. We have such high hopes for him. It was important to get this deal done to secure his future.' Head coach Graham Potter always intended to integrate Potts into the squad during pre-season. The midfielder has featured in friendlies against Grasshoppers and Manchester United and started consecutive matches against Everton, Bournemouth and Lille. Advertisement 'It's probably been the most special pre-season I've had in terms of the opportunities I've been given and the playing time I've had,' Potts told club media this week. 'It's been my dream since I was a kid to be part of the West Ham first team, and to be around this squad is obviously something I've wanted my whole life.' It helps that Potts has not had any issues adapting to a first-team environment. He was an unused substitute in the Conference League final victory over Fiorentina in 2023. He framed his shirt and medal and, as part of his initiation before the final, Potts sang 'Love Yourself' by Justin Bieber in front of team-mates, receiving a standing ovation. Potts returned to Rush Green after his loan moves a more confident individual. He has learned a lot about himself over the last 12 months, having navigated a tough start at Portsmouth. He was initially homesick having moved away from the family home in Essex for the first time in his career. But after his final appearance for Portsmouth against Hull City, supporters at Fratton Park urged him to stay for one more year. Mousinho has opened the door for Potts' potential return but is well aware the midfielder has higher aspirations. 'It's not one we are focused on now because Freddie is going to be with the first team at West Ham,' Mousinho told The News. 'The first thing for Fred to think about is trying to get into their team, which is definitely possible off the back of the season he had last year. If, at some point, Fred becomes available then we will definitely be at the other end of the phone and very, very willing. I wouldn't 100 per cent rule it out, even if it is far less likely than it was this time last year.' Potts has the maturity to impress Potter. The current central midfield options are Edson Alvarez, Tomas Soucek, James Ward-Prowse, Andy Irving, Guido Rodriguez and Lewis Orford. Alvarez, Irving and Rodriguez have uncertain futures, while there is firm interest in Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton. Potts believes he has similar attributes to his team-mate Alvarez, particularly the aggressive side and winning individual battles. It would be a welcome boost to West Ham's midfield, with it being an area of weakness last season. Potts has had an upward trajectory from League One to the Championship. Defending champions Sinner, Sabalenka reach Cincinnati quarters
Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka led the way into the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals on Wednesday with Carlos Alcaraz hot on their heels with a straight-sets victory of his own. Sinner shrugged off a mid-match weather delay lasting nearly three hours as he advanced 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) over Adrian Mannarino. Sabalenka, taken to three sets in her previous match with Emma Raducanu, regrouped after surrendering a second-set service break to defeat Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 7-5. Alcaraz, the second seed who has reached the finals of his last six tournaments, hammered Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi 6-1, 6-4. After sweeping the opening set in 28 minutes, Alcaraz hit a speed bump, dropping his serve to trail 2-4.
