A koala sanctuary and old beer factory: Australian architects punching above their weight

Australian architects are over-represented in a global short list that includes a New York film studio, a noodle bar, the interior design of a rainforest hotel in Singapore, a plaza in London's Canary Wharf and a wildlife eco-park.
Of 468 projects, the US had the most on the shortlist with 52, followed by the UK (50), Australia (37), China (35) and India (23).
The World Architecture Festival is the largest and most hyped of international architecture competitions, featuring live judging sessions that could be called 'Architects' Got Talent'.
'Only at WAF are you judged by your peers, your heroes and the industry's power players, all live at the festival,' says the pitch.
In contrast with many of the big projects shortlisted, Ken McBryde, design director at the architecture Gensler Australia, said Guulabaa (the place of koala) was 'almost an austere project, bare bones, but made in a grand way'.
McBryde said the Forestry Corporation of NSW project near Wauchope included a 'bush chapel' made of seven-metre telegraph poles and fire-resistant Australian hardwoods.
It is designed for Indigenous educational programs and can also host weddings.
The area was devastated by the 2019-20 bushfires, which killed millions of native animals, including koalas. The work by Gensler includes an Aboriginal cafe and a gallery and is located next to a koala conservation centre by AJC Architects.
McBryde said it was the world's first wild koala breeding facility, setting a new global benchmark for conservation-led development. He said the project by Forest Corp would raise awareness that 'koalas and the harvesting of trees can go hand in hand'.

Other Australian projects include the new Yellamundie library at Liverpool by fjcstudio, the high-rise One Sydney Harbour by Renzo Piano, the adaptation of Rosebery Engine Yards by Group GSA, Pyrmont Community Centre by Welsh + Major, the interior of Shell House by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects and the Sirius Redevelopment by BVN.
Two metro stations were also shortlisted, including Martin Place by Grimshaw, and Central by Woods Bagot with John McAslan + Partners.

'Magic': The $5 Bunnings item Australians just can't get enough of

A US based cleaning expert has detailed a new hack to clean her trainers, and it is found in the aisles of a titan of Australian retail. Caroline Solomon shares cleaning content to her social media channels, including a thread of videos that have show her trying to clean dirty trainers. A But there is one video that she has posted which has led to a popular product sold in Australia repurposed as a cleaner for dirty trainers. 'I'm sharing two easy ways to make your white leather sneakers look brand new again,' Caroline said at the start of the video that she posted to her TikTok. 'The first thing you need of course is a Magic Eraser,' she told her followers on the video sharing sight. In Australia, the item in question is sold as a Mr Clean Eraser pad for $4.98, or a four pack which sells for $7.49. Caroline explained the method to clean dirty white sneakers with the Magic Eraser, starting by first running the melamine sponge under water to get it 'damp, but not soaked'. Then, she demonstrated gently scrubbing the foam block along both 'the sneaker and the rubber sole of the shoe'. The result? Instantly refreshed looking sneakers. Commentators were quick to praise the self-styled home guru. 'This worked for me,' read one reply. Another read 'I cut mine in half to get more use out of them that way! They get worn faster when wet so I also only wet half of sponge.' On the Bunnings website, the Mr Clean Eraser Pod Block has a 4.9 stars rating, with many reviews raving about how it 'works great' to remove scuffs and marks from walls and floors. However, none of the reviews made mention of its bonus use to clean up dirty sneakers.

Australia's Jim's Group the latest business to capitalise on viral Coldplay kiss cam moment with hilarious meme

An iconic Victorian company has cashed in on the Coldplay kiss cam scandal by promoting its multiple services. Jim's Group, which also operates in New Zealand and the UK, posted the meme to Facebook, captioning it 'Jim's Services that can help' with a list of all the companies that the group owns. In the centre of the circle was an image of the infamous kiss cam moment which was caught at Coldplay's Boston concert last week. Jim's Group, which is based in the Foothills Business Park in Southeast Melbourne, is among a dozen Australian and international businesses that have attempted to use the scandal to promote their businesses, with some using AI to cash in on the viral trend. Gold Coast business Gritty Gram used AI to superimpose former Astromoner CEO Andy Byron and HR director Kristin Cabot to promote their t-shirt business, captioning the image 'Huge shoutout to our favourite couple for swinging through the store today, Behave yourself out there guys.' Tesla also got in on the act, as well as Nine and Seven, with Morning Show host Larry Emdur recreating the moment with the Sunrise Cash Cow. But some business insiders are warning that in replicating the viral meme, the human angle of the story is being forgotten. In the aftermath of the moment going viral, Astronomer, a New York based software and AI firm launched an internal investigation, and Mr Byron subsequently announced he was resigning. Phoebe Netto, PR expert and founder of Pure Public Relations, said the sentiment surrounding meme-able moments could shift quickly. 'The human impact of this situation is starting to be discussed, and this will see the tone change,' she said. 'A CEO has resigned, families and relationships are impacted, Astronomer staff now have unwanted attention and disruption, and the sadness that comes from affairs are coming to the fore, and brands need to quickly move on from the jovial memes to avoid a lag in what is considered appropriate.' Bryden Campbell, founder at Brand Rebellion said audiences were tuned into authenticity. He said that inserting a brand into an ongoing viral moment could have dividends, but at the same time, it could backfire. 'Just because something's viral doesn't mean your brand needs to have a say,' he said. 'And once you enter the conversation, you may find yourself expected to keep having opinions. 'If the situation escalates, or a new one emerges, you've set a precedent. It creates an ongoing expectation that your brand will always be vocal, which may not serve you long-term."
