Set to go mainstream
Leo satellite broadband has been popular with New Zealanders in remote areas since it first arrived four years ago. A year ago Download Weekly reported: ' New Zealand has the highest number of satellite connections per person in the OECD '.
Melbourne-based Gartner director analyst Khurram Shahzad says the technology will soon break out of its rural niche and become mainstream.
He says, 'Up until three years ago, there were only around 3000 satellites in the sky. But in the last three years we have reached around 11,000. At this pace, we are on track to exceed 40,000 satellites in the next three years. It means satellite communication will become more mainstream.'
Reusable rockets change the economics
One of the drivers is that, thanks to reusable rockets, the cost of satellite launches has dropped to the point where it is no longer a barrier to entry.
Shahzad says Starlink has the first mover advantage and has the largest constellation, but it is not the only player. There are new companies focused on different markets like services for IoT or direct to mobile.
Satellites have long been the obvious choice in places where there is no terrestrial connectivity. Shahzad says this will expand so that the technology will complement existing services and, in some cases, replace them.
Better quality for rural users
'There are still a lot of areas where broadband quality is not good enough, or the infrastructure does not provide high-speed broadband. Leos (Low Earth Orbit satellites) can provide better speeds in those instances.
'And there are businesses who want a backup or a fallback. So if there is an outage, they still have business continuity.'
Another area where satellites are likely to dominate is with connected or autonomous vehicles. Shahzad says new electric vehicles now come with embedded satellite connectivity, to the point where some car manufacturers are launching their own satellites.
The technology is also being used where people work at a temporary location such as a construction site. And then there are the maritime and aviation applications, neither of these are well served by existing networks.
Competition coming
Amazon's arrival will sharpen market competition. Shahzad says we can expect to see five or six major players but there will be more. 'By our last count, there are almost 20 providers in this space who are all building their own constellations.'
The bottleneck for the industry is finding launch slots, which is where SpaceX and Starlink have another advantage. Many of the would be competitors will use SpaceX for launches.
'Once this bottleneck is overcome, we can expect to see tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of satellites in the sky. He says experts estimate the maximum number could be around a million.'
Challenges remain
Despite cheaper launches, the technology has one big disadvantage over terrestrial networks: satellites have a limited life span.
'It's around five years for the earlier versions. Starlink says the new satellites last eight to 10 years, perhaps. But even then, they need to replenish those satellites quite often. It also means that there is potential of a lot of space debris. And that is one area which is still a little grey.'
Another grey area is spectrum. Satellite operators typically don't buy spectrum and there are multiple competing and conflicting standards around the world.
Direct to mobile
When it comes to direct to mobile services there are some satellite operators who use the spectrum allocated to their mobile network operator partners. That will make newer satellite operators dependent on their partners.
Because spectrum is allocated on a country by country basis, and most MNOs are based in a single country, satellite operators will have to manage a patchwork of standards.
Shahzad says there are issues managing interoperability and handover: 'How do you manage interference between the two? How do you manage the handover, and do you want to carry on the session from one network to the other—and how do you bring it back?'

Online scams trap one third of victims in Australia, New Zealand

Recent research from Trend Micro has revealed that online scams are a prevalent threat in both Australia and New Zealand, affecting a substantial proportion of the population in each country. The study, which surveyed 1,025 Australian and 517 New Zealand consumers aged 18 and over, found that two-thirds of participants in both countries had been targeted by online scams, and a significant share had fallen victim. In Australia, 27% of respondents reported having fallen for an online scam, whereas in New Zealand, the figure was higher at 33%. Financial loss and delayed detection According to the survey, nearly one-third of scam victims in both countries only realised they had been targeted after experiencing financial losses or failing to receive goods they had paid for. This demonstrates how easily such scams can go unnoticed until consequences become serious. Common scam tactics The research highlights a shift in scamming techniques, with perpetrators increasingly exploiting digital convenience and emotional triggers rather than relying solely on traditional, technical methods. In Australia, 25% of scam victims reported being deceived by promoted items on social media marketplaces or retail sites that appeared legitimate, while in New Zealand, this affected 32% of victims. Other methods include investment scam texts (19% in Australia, 17% in New Zealand), and urgent messages from impostors posing as official organisations demanding payments or personal data (18% in Australia, 9% in New Zealand). Scammers frequently manipulate digital communication behaviour. In both countries, 39% of users had been asked to switch to another app during an online conversation - a tactic often used by scammers to continue their schemes in environments with fewer security controls. In Australia, 13% of victims were contacted by impostors posing as trusted acquaintances, while in New Zealand the figure was 18%. Other platforms used include dating apps and messaging services, through which false trust is established to increase the scam's credibility. Risks of overconfidence and device use The widespread daily use of smartphones is creating more opportunities for cybercriminals. In Australia, 46% of respondents use their phones 1-4 hours each day, 27% for 5-8 hours, and 12% for more than 8 hours. In New Zealand, 45% use their mobile devices 1-4 hours daily, 30% for 5-8 hours, and 14% for more than 8 hours. Despite high engagement with banking, shopping, and social functions on these devices, many consumers are not employing security best practices. Nearly half of Australians (47%) and half of New Zealanders (50%) do not use antivirus or security software on their mobile devices. The survey also revealed that 87% of Australians and 88% of New Zealanders use banking apps on their phones, yet 61% and 62% respectively do not use virtual private networks (VPNs) for added protection. Among those not using security software, 39% in both countries believe their phones are secure as is, while significant proportions rely on their own caution or remain unaware of available protections. Cost concerns also deter 17% of respondents in both countries from adopting security solutions. Stigma and underreporting Embarrassment continues to suppress the true scale of online scams, with many victims hesitant to disclose their experiences. In Australia, although 88% of victims share their experience, nearly four in ten of those who remain quiet (38%) do so out of shame. In New Zealand, while 81% disclose their ordeal, almost half (47%) of silent victims cite embarrassment as the reason. Advocacy for awareness and protection "Scam culture has gone mainstream. Our research shows Australians are unknowingly putting themselves at risk, placing trust in their devices, their instincts and everyday platforms without the right protection in place," said Ashley Millar, Director, Consumer Education and Marketing at Trend. "With the increasing sophistication of technology, scams are no longer easy to identify, making them harder to spot – even for the most cautious consumers. That's why education is critical, understanding how scams work is the first step to avoiding them. But when awareness slips or instincts fail, having antivirus and mobile security in place is an essential safety net," he finished. Advice for consumers Trend Micro recommended several basic precautions to mitigate scam risks. These include being sceptical of unverified sources, not switching to different apps during conversations, pausing before clicking on links or providing personal information, installing security software on smartphones, and staying updated on evolving scam tactics. The findings underline how digital habits and confidence in online platforms can expose users to significant risks if appropriate security and awareness measures are not followed.

Just over $66m of the debt was from businesses or individuals who were bankrupt or in liquidation. Businesses collect GST on their sales and then send it to Inland Revenue when they file their GST returns. Deloitte partner Allan Bullot had earlier warned that GST debt could be creating a wave of zombie companies. Construction had the largest share of unpaid PAYE and GST, with a total of almost $1b over the tax years from 2018 through 2025. Rental, hiring and real estate services was next with $533.5m. On a measure of debt per thousand enterprises, electricity, gas, water and waste companies had the largest unpaid amount in the most recent tax year. Robyn Walker, a tax partner at Deloitte, said Inland Revenue had been given a clear message to collect more of the money it was owed. The number of businesses being liquidated by Inland Revenue has jumped in recent years. Walker said the data could indicate that other creditors to those businesses were in a precarious position. If a business failed, Inland Revenue would be the first to be paid, which could reduce a business' ability to pay anyone else it owed. 'People could be choosing to pay other business suppliers first - but they maybe aren't paying anybody... there's potential for a lot of collateral damage if Inland Revenue is allowing tax debt to accumulate.' She said people who were not able to pay GST and PAYE should contact their accountant to make sure they still had a viable business. If a business had hired staff on the expectation it could pay them a certain amount before tax, and it turned out that they could not afford the PAYE component, there was probably a bigger issue at play, she said. 'The business may not be viable or may need help in a more substantive way.' Simplicity chief economist Shamubeel Eaqub said the data highlighted the distress many businesses were facing. 'Some businesses - not many - think it's okay not to meet their responsibilities. 'PAYE and GST are only collected on behalf of New Zealanders, it's not your revenue.... there's a risk to other creditors.' He said businesses with tax debt were quite often not viable and owners could be breaching their directors' duties. 'It can mean big problems, that's why the IRD has been so active... it's the right thing to do.' The data showed Inland Revenue had written off $110.3 million of unpaid PAYE and GST in 2018, $109.1m in 2019, $85.5m in 2020, $94.8m in 2021, in 2022, $99.3m in 2023, $56m in 2024 and $7.6m from the last tax year.
