Woman claims trial to child abuse, placing chili inside girl's mouth
The accused pleaded not guilty before Judge Nor Azah Kasran.
According to the charge, the 33-year-old, who has custody of the girl, is alleged to have caused physical harm by striking her with a phone charger cable and putting chilli in her mouth.
The alleged offence took place at a house in Bandar Bertam Perdana, Kepala Batas, at about 10am on July 1.
The accused was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
During the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Rifaie Mohamed opposed bail on the grounds that the offence is non-bailable.
However, he proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety should the court permit it, saying that the victim is the accused's biological daughter, who now lives with an adoptive family.
Defence counsel A. Mahesh requested minimal bail, citing his client's limited means as a restaurant worker earning daily wages and her responsibility for seven other children, including a breastfeeding infant.
"My client has cooperated fully with the police during the investigation and is not a flight risk," he said.
Nor Azah allowed bail at RM8,000 with one surety, and imposed additional conditions requiring the accused to report to the police station monthly and forbidding her from contacting the victim or prosecution witnesses.
The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 10 to obtain the victim's medical report.

Couple, Allegedly Hired By Loan Shark, Nabbed For Deadly Segamat Blaze
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- A couple, believed to have been hired by a Singapore-based loan shark, were arrested for a house fire that killed a 72-year-old woman in Kampung Bukit Siput, Segamat on July 25. Johor police chief, Commissioner Ab Rahaman Arsad, said the Segamat District Police Headquarters operations centre received an emergency call regarding a fire involving five houses at about 4.30 am. "Investigations by the police and the Johor Fire and Rescue Department found elements of arson. "Johor police formed a special task force for the investigation and arrested the couple, a 21-year-old man and his 19-year-old girlfriend, in Subang Jaya, Selangor, a week after the incident. "Interrogation of both suspects revealed that an Ah Long (loan shark) syndicate in Singapore hired them to carry out criminal intimidation by setting fire to the house of a borrower who had failed to repay a loan," he said in a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters here today. Ab Rahaman said investigations found that the couple were suspected of actively committing mischiefs in Johor and Selangor since July, receiving RM1,000 for each job. "At the time of the incident, the elderly woman was alone. She had never received any threat, and it is believed that the suspected loan was taken out by a family member of the victim," he said. He said four investigation papers had been referred to the Johor State Legal Advisor's office and received instructions for prosecution. Ab Rahaman added that the male suspect will be charged at the Segamat Magistrate's Court tomorrow with nine charges under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for causing death without intent, Section 436 for arson, and Section 507 for criminal intimidation.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi also sentenced Tino Alphonsus, 31, to another six months behind bars for threatening his wife. Tino, who pleaded guilty to both charges, was ordered to serve the jail terms concurrently from the date of his arrest on April 12. He was charged under Section 319 of the Penal Code for causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, as well as under Section 506 for criminal intimidation, which provides for up to seven years in jail, or a fine, or both. According to the facts of the case, around 7am on April 11, the victim, who was working at a Jalan Chew Hik Hiong 1 eatery, was approached by two men looking to collect a debt from her husband. She brought the men to her rental house in Jalan Tiong Hua to meet her husband before returning to work. When she returned home around 9pm, an argument broke out as Tino became enraged because she had brought the loan sharks to their house. He slapped her on the face and head several times, leaving her with injuries. The victim claimed she had been assaulted frequently and could no longer tolerate Tino's behaviour, prompting her to lodge a police report. Police arrested him on Lorong Lai Chee at 5.35pm on April 12. Investigations revealed that Tino assaulted his wife out of anger over the loan shark visit and also slapped her twice on the face after accusing her of having an affair.
