Lee Carsley confident England Under-21s can take ‘biggest step'

Two years on from winning the competition for the first time since 1984, the Young Lions are preparing for another final having narrowly avoided a shock group stage exit.
Slovenia's defeat of the Czech Republic meant England edged through as Group B runners-up despite losing 2-1 to much-changed Germany, who they will face again in Saturday's Bratislava showpiece.

Carsley's side have kicked on since then, with a 3-1 quarter-final win against favorites Spain followed by Wednesday's impressive 2-1 semi-final triumph against the Netherlands.
'One more step, which is the biggest step,' the Under-21s boss told BBC Radio 5 Live.
'But we've got that experience, we've done it before, so hopefully we can play with a lot of respect for opponents but try and impose our gameplan on them.
'We all set out with one objective, and that was to try and win it again.
'It's obviously easier said than done, but I wanted the lads to have the confidence and belief that we could do that.
'We tried to leave all of the hope at St George's (Park) and come out here with belief and I think that the players have got a great spirit about them.
'I think they really are together, they're committed to what they're trying to do and I'm very lucky as a coach, along with the rest of the staff, to work with these players.'
England overcame tough opposition and stifling heat in Slovakia to reach a second successive Euro Under-21s final.
Harvey Elliott smashed them ahead and, having been rocked by Noah Ohio levelling from distance, the Liverpool midfielder slalomed through to spectacularly seal a 2-1 semi-final triumph.

'You forget the age of this team,' Carsley said. 'Very young, had a setback but went again. I thought they played with such maturity, they've got great team spirit.
'The most important thing now is, like we said after the Spain game, this can't be our highlight. We have to make sure that now we try and get the job done.'
England played with a swagger, much like they did in Georgia two years ago, as Carsley seeks to follow Dave Sexton in masterminding a second Under-21 Euros triumph.
'We try and put them in positions, try and give them some basic direction on what we're looking from them, and then they take on board where the space is,' the former senior England interim boss said.
'I want them to be different. We have to play different, we have to be expansive, we have to be exciting, we have to be creative, and I think we're going in the right direction.'

England's progress is made all the most impressive by the fact they are without some key players due to the Club World Cup, with Liam Delap and Jobe Bellingham among those unavailable after summer switches.
'We were fully aware of what the situations were going to be, so we were able to pivot and adjust quite quickly,' Carsley added.
'We haven't mentioned who's not here. What we've tried to do is make sure that the players who are here feel special and feel wanted, and I'm sure they do.'

Erling Haaland hits incredible goal landmark at JUST 24 - as he comes off the bench to help Man City ease past Juventus in Club World Cup

Erling Haaland reached a new milestone within minutes of making his entrance during Manchester City 's latest Club World Cup win. On Thursday, City breezed past Juventus 5-2 in Orlando to guarantee a 100% winning record in the group stages. Haaland, who was named on the bench by Pep Guardiola, entered the fray as a half-time substitute for Omar Marmoush. Within minutes, the Norwegian pounced for his 300th career goal, albeit via a fortunate miskick when tapping in Matheus Nunes' cross in the 52nd minute. Aged 24, Haaland crossed the 300 goal mark in his 370th professional game - for club and country. The company Haaland finds himself beating with this milestone is truly remarkable. Erling Haaland reaches 300 goals for club and country with his tap-in vs. Juventus 🌟 (via @DAZNFootball) — B/R Football (@brfootball) June 26, 2025 He has reached his triple century far quicker than numerous notorious goalscorers, including Cristiano Ronaldo (554 games), Lionel Messi (418 games) and Kylian Mbappé (409 games). During his run, Haaland has netted for City, Molde, Borussia Dortmund and Norway. City have been the biggest beneficiaries of Haaland's rise to 300, the Norwegian scoring over 100 times for the Premier League club since joining in a €60 million (£51.2 million) deal from Dortmund in 2022. By winning the game against Juventus, City ensured top spot in their group. They will play the runners-up in Group H - likely Real Madrid or RB Salzburg - in the las 16.

Pep Guardiola hails Man City after impressive win over Juventus

Pep Guardiola hailed a stunning performance after Manchester City thrashed Juventus 5-2 to top their group at the Club World Cup. Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal and Rodri played 66 minutes on his first start since September as City moved through the gears at Orlando's Camping World Stadium on Thursday. City defied intense heat and a later torrential downpour to sweep aside a Juventus team that beat them 2-0 in the Champions League last season. Guardiola's team looked more like the all-conquering outfit they have been for much of the Spaniard's reign rather than the ponderous side that laboured through much of the 2024-25 campaign. The statement victory ensured they won Group G with a 100 per cent record and theoretically secured a more favourable route through a tournament they must now be among the favourites to win. City manager Guardiola said: 'I liked the way we did it. It has been a long time since we had a performance like this on and off the ball. The players were committed and we are happy to beat a top side. 'This is just one game but I think the players felt again what it was like to be a good team. It's the first time we've performed the way we can. 'We won the last two but we adjusted a few things. I'm really pleased because the players realise what we have to do to get back to what we were in the last decade. 'The belief always comes from your performances, not your past.' The loss of Rodri with a serious knee injury for the majority of last season was one of the key reasons for their failure to match the standards of the past. After winning the Premier League for the previous four years, City failed to mount a strong title defence and exited the Champions League before the last 16. His appearance in Orlando represented a notable step up in his comeback after three substitute outings. Guardiola said: 'Sooner or later Rodri had to start. I said, 'OK, 45 minutes' but at half-time he said he wanted five to 10 minutes more. The game was under control. 'In the last few games we have conceded a lot of transitions but it didn't happen this time. Everyone knows how important Rodri is. He is one of the best players in the world.' City's early opener from Jeremy Doku was cancelled out by Teun Koopmeiners after an Ederson error but a Pierre Kalulu own goal restored the English side's lead. Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho all struck in the second half as City made victory certain before a Dusan Vlahovic consolation. Away from the tournament, City midfielder Jack Grealish has not travelled to the United States. Guardiola had little to say on reports linking the England international with Bayern Munich. He said: 'I wish him the best but I don't know what is going to happen.'.

Erling Haaland hits 300th career goal as Man City cruise past Juventus

Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal as Manchester City thrashed Juventus 5-2 to finish top of Group G at the Club World Cup. Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Savinho – with a long-range stunner – were also on target as City produced an outstanding display despite both sweltering heat and a torrential downpour in Orlando on Thursday. City were pegged back after Doku's early opener when Ederson gifted a goal to Teun Koopmeiners but their lead was restored when Pierre Kalulu turned into his own net at the Camping World Stadium. A simply outstanding display! 🩵 🦓 2-5 🩵 #FIFACWC — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 26, 2025 Haaland, reaching a notable landmark in senior football for club and country, came off the bench to bundle in the third and Foden and Savinho made victory certain before Dusan Vlahovic's consolation. The result means City progress with a 100 per cent record from their three group games and should, in theory at least, have a more straightforward route through the knockout stages. Juve beat City 2-0 when the sides met in the Champions League in December but this was a far different side than the one that won just once in 13 games in a dismal run late last year. It was also a notable shift in gear from City after opening the competition with two straightforward wins against Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain. With Ballon d'Or winner Rodri making his first start since September, City were fluid and energetic. They made a fast start and Bernardo Silva had a header saved by the feet of Michele Di Gregorio before they took the lead in the ninth minute through Doku. Summer signing Rayan Ait-Nouri slipped him in with a fine throughball and the Belgian tucked home after cutting inside Kalulu. Juve responded immediately and City failed to make the most of a reprieve after Vlahovic scuffed an effort wide. Ederson carelessly gave the ball away from the resulting goalkick and Koopmeiners rifled a shot past the Brazilian. City dealt well with the setback and Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri and Omar Marmoush all had attempts blocked. The pressure paid off in the 26th minute although they benefited from a huge stroke of luck as Kalulu diverted Matheus Nunes' ball past Di Gregorio. The ferocious sunshine gave way to heavy rain just before the break but City were not deterred as Savinho shot at Di Gregorio before the keeper pushed away further strikes from Ait-Nouri and Marmoush. Marmoush was replaced by Haaland at the interval and the Norwegian soon made an impact. Reijnders played in Nunes, who rolled a pass perfectly into the path of Haaland in front of goal. His connection was hardly the cleanest but such was his positioning he could hardly miss. Ederson denied Vlahovic as Juve sought a way back but Haaland created the opening for the fourth when his pass was picked up by Savinho and powered in by Foden from close range. Savinho added another in style when he thundered in a shot off the underside of the bar from distance after 75 minutes.
