A prisoner in France escapes in his cellmate's bag
Sébastien Cauwel, director of France's prison administration, told CNN affiliate BFMTV Sunday that the man 'took advantage' of the release of his fellow inmate to escape from the Corbas prison near Lyon, a city in the country's southeast.
Cauwel told the broadcaster that prison officials had noticed on Saturday morning that the man had escaped. He acknowledged an 'accumulation of errors,' noting that an investigation into the incident had been opened.
'This is an extremely rare event that we have never seen in this administration and which clearly shows a whole series of serious failures,' Cauwel said, noting that the Corbas prison is overcrowded.
The prison has an occupancy rate of around 170%, he told the broadcaster. 'That makes the working conditions of our officers more complicated.'
The inmate who escaped was serving several sentences, France's prison service said in a statement cited by European news agency AFP. He was also under investigation in a case connected to organized crime, AFP reported, citing an unnamed source close to the matter.
Last year, another prisoner in France escaped after gunmen ambushed a prison convoy transporting him to a jail in the northern region of Normandy. The fugitive, Mohamed Amra – also known as 'The Fly' – was rearrested in Romania in February this year, according to Reuters.

Prosecutors call for PSG's Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial
French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic charge to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. Robbery of U.K. Royal Family's Items Leads to $4 Million Insurance Payment
The organization that manages the British royal family's art collection received an insurance payment of £3 million, about $4 million, after thieves stole two of its artifacts that were on loan to a Paris museum, the organization has disclosed. The two pieces, both elaborate snuff boxes that were originally used to hold powdered tobacco, included one that was encrusted with almost 3,000 diamonds and another that was decorated with gold and depicted the birth of the Roman goddess Venus. Both had been on loan to the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris for its 'pocket luxury' exhibition, which opened in March last year with a collection of opulently decorated historical fashion accessories. But on the morning of Nov. 20, according to the Paris police, robbers carried out a violent daytime heist in front of visitors and employees. A report in the French daily Le Monde outlined how the robbers sped into the museum's courtyard on scooters and threatened a security guard with an ax before smashing a display case and grabbing several of the items inside. The two royal snuff boxes were found to be among the stolen artifacts, according to the museum. They were on loan from the Royal Collection Trust, which controls the royal family's art collection, and the trust's annual financial report revealed the resulting £3 million insurance payout. 'During the year, an insurance settlement was received in respect of snuff boxes stolen whilst on loan to the Musée Cognacq-Jay,' the report said, adding that the money had been placed into a fund 'to be used for the enhancement of the Collection.'
