Siemens Limited has secured two separate orders worth approximately ₹773 crore from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MAHA-METRO) for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, and commissioning of advanced signalling and telecommunication technologies for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project's Phase 2, including the augmentation of Phase 1.The scope of the project includes implementing Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology and advanced telecommunication systems across a 43.8-kilometre network, covering 32 stations. The execution timeline is set at 42 months, or 3 years and 5 months. The deployment of Siemens' metro rail technologies is aimed at enhancing train frequency, improving passenger experience, and maintaining the highest safety standards.According to the company, the systems will enable 100 per cent punctuality, energy savings, and optimised headways, thereby ensuring efficient and safe operations across the metro network.Rajeev Joisar, Head of Mobility Business, Siemens Limited, said, 'The project will contribute significantly to the sustainable urban development of Nagpur. It further demonstrates Siemens' ability to deliver end-to-end mobility technologies that integrate automation, digitalisation, and sustainability for India's urban future.'

Pune Metro likely to extend to Uruli Kanchan

Pune: Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said that the metro route be extended to Uruli Kanchan instead of stopping at Loni Kalbhor, citing the city's rising population and traffic bottlenecks on the Pune–Solapur highway. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said metro route be extended to Uruli Kanchan instead of stopping at Loni Kalbhor citing the city's rising population and traffic issues. (HT FILE) 'Planning should account for increasing urbanisation in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and corresponding infrastructure needs,' he said. Currently, Pune's metro covers 33 km, with another 33 km under construction. The proposal forms part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Pune Metropolitan Region, submitted by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which envisions 312 km of metro and metro-light corridors across the city by 2054. The plan also calls for upgrades to road, bus rapid transit, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. Known for its BAIF research centre and agricultural base, Uruli Kanchan has been witnessing rapid urbanisation. Officials say extending metro services here could ease congestion, boost regional connectivity and promote balanced growth in east Pune. 'We will study the feasibility of extending the route beyond Loni to Uruli Kanchan in phases. We will prepare a detailed project report (DPR). PMRDA will have to send a request to us after that, we will continue the procedure,' said Atul Gadgil, director (works) Pune Metro. 'This will benefit daily commuters and open up new opportunities for economic growth in the eastern corridor,' he said.

Namma Metro Yellow Line: Why the big launch comes with a 'big' wait of 25 minutes?

Bengaluru's much-anticipated Yellow Line of Namma Metro, meant to ease congestion on busy stretches like Silk Board and Bommasandra, is finally set to open. However, the relief may be short-lived for commuters. Trains will run at 25-minute intervals initially, as only three train sets are ready for service. This limited start can carry barely 25,000–30,000 passengers daily, far below the 2–3 lakh capacity promised when the ₹ 400-crore-per-kilometre project was planned. The slow rollout is not due to last-minute lapses, but the result of years of delays caused by the pandemic, red tape, diplomatic hurdles, and supply chain disruptions, according to a report by Times of India. The trouble began in December 2019 when BMRCL awarded Chinese firm CRRC Nanjing Puzhen a contract for 216 coaches. Twelve trains were to be built in China, with the rest manufactured in India under the 'Make in India' plan. CRRC even bought 50 acres in Andhra Pradesh for the factory. By 2021, the plan had stalled. CRRC failed to get the necessary clearances to start production in India. In December that year, BMRCL issued a termination notice, and the matter went to court. In April 2022, Karnataka High Court allowed the contract to continue, with extra time granted to CRRC. The Chinese company partnered with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd in May 2022 to produce 34 trains in India. But geopolitical tensions after the Galwan clash brought new problems — CRRC's engineers could not get visas to enter India for over a year. Without them, key assembly and testing work was stuck. Visas were finally issued in December 2023, allowing CRRC teams to work on-site. The first prototype from China arrived in February 2024 for testing. Indian-made trains started rolling out only in May 2024. As of August 2025, BMRCL has just three train sets. A fourth is expected soon, which could bring down the wait time to 20 minutes. The full fleet of 15 trains which is required for 5-minute peak-time frequency is reportedly expected by March 2026. The Yellow Line uses CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control), a modern signalling system that allows closer train intervals and better energy efficiency. But this system is incompatible with trains on the Purple and Green Lines, which use different technology. Retrofitting would be costly and time-consuming. Moreover, the 57 trains on the existing lines are barely enough for their own schedules, and additional rolling stock there has also been delayed.
