Scheme to introduce 24-hour water supply is on, says Tiruchi Mayor

The Hindu30-06-2025
Mayor M. Anbazhagan on Monday refuted recent criticism by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and asserted that there was no delay in the execution of projects by the Corporation.
Mr. Anbazhagan told the Corporation Council that plans were in place to roll out 24-hour drinking water supply in select parts of the city within a month. 'Efforts are under way to ensure uninterrupted water supply to city residents,' said Mr. Anbazhagan. According to Corporation sources, the 24-hour water supply scheme under the AMRUT 2.0 initiative will be implemented in Ward Nos. 51 to 56 and later expanded to other wards.
Responding to the AIADMK's call for a protest on July 3 over alleged delays in civic projects, Mr. Anbazhagan dismissed the claims and said: 'There are challenges related to tendering for shops in Panjapur, among others, but all work will be completed within a month's time.' He said the overbridge near Tiruchi Junction would be ready soon.
The delay in the construction of an overbridge near the Fort Railway Station was due to the railways and not the Corporation, he said and urged Mr. Palaniswami to instead take up the matter with the Centre.
Based on police department recommendations, repair work on Palakkarai and Thennur Road overbridges would be taken up after completion of the work near Fort Station on Salai Road to avoid traffic disruption.
Mr. Anbazhagan said: 'During the AIADMK's tenure, there was no significant progress in underground drainage (UGD) work. It was under the DMK government that substantial UGD work was undertaken and ₹600 crore was allocated to restore roads damaged during the laying of UGD lines. The previous government stopped with mere announcements without allocating the necessary funds.'
V. Jawahar (Congress) urged the civic body to build a dedicated toilet complex with bathing facilities for women near the Srirangam temple.
S. Suresh (CPI-M) alleged that despite an increase in budget allocations for sanitation contractors, sweepers continue to receive outdated wages. He called upon the Corporation to adhere to the district administration's revised pay structure of ₹717 a day as against the current ₹570.
K. Suresh (CPI) sought urgent modernisation of micro composting centres in the Corporation limits noting that workers continue to be exposed to hazardous conditions.
S. Muthukumar (MDMK) raised concerns over possible flooding in Azhagiripuram when water was released in the Kollidam. He urged the construction of a retaining wall to safeguard the settlement.
Several councillors raised complaints about the increasing stray dog menace noting the deteriorating health of many animals. The Mayor said the Corporation was in talks with Blue Cross and planned to allocate half an acre of land for a facility to shelter diseased or stray animals.

130th amendment a black bill, move towards authoritarianism: Stalin

Chennai: Chief minister on Thursday said will mount strong opposition to the 130th Amendment Bill just like it did against the (CAA) and Waqf Bills. Speaking at the book release function of former minister A Rahman Khan in Chennai, Stalin said, "Union home minister (Amit Shah) tabled a black bill in Parliament on Tuesday to dismiss opponents using investigating agencies, moving the nation towards authoritarianism. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " He said, earlier, they brought CAA and Waqf Bills to target minorities. "The DMK stoutly opposed them. We will oppose this black bill with equal intensity. Through these laws, the BJP govt at the centre is trying not just to divert the people of the country from key issues but is also deviating from the Constitution." Hitting out at AIADMK, Stalin said, "AIADMK is a party with double standards. Rahman Khan once said in the assembly that their symbol is 'two leaves', so naturally they have double standards. No one countered it." He recalled an incident when Rahman Khan refused the offer of former chief minister M G Ramachandran to join the AIADMK. "Rahman Khan stayed strong," said Stalin. Referring to speeches of Rahman Khan, Stalin said DMK needed more such "thunderous speakers". Though DMK's youth wing headed by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin is taking initiatives such as 'En Uyirinum Melana' and 'Pasarai Pakkam', other party wings should also undertake such initiatives to create more speakers, he said.

Palaniswami trains guns on Vijay

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday attacked TVK founder Vijay, saying he was being ignorant and was expecting results without hard work. Mr. Palaniswami was addressing a meeting in Kancheepuram as part of his statewide tour. Without naming Mr. Vijay, Mr. Palaniswami compared politics with cinema, and said that just as one could not [always] debut as a hero in films, a [political] newcomer could not expect to shine in politics immediately. Mr. Palaniswami's comments came in response to Mr. Vijay's speech at his party's State conference, in which he said the AIADMK had formed an incompatible alliance with the BJP. 'Some people are asking whose hands is the AIADMK in today. What a pity! That kind of talk is out of ignorance. If he is the leader of a party without even knowing this, how can his partymen trust him?' he said. Attributing his success in politics to the people, Mr. Palaniswami said his only identity was hard work, loyalty, and service that helped him become the party's general secretary as well as the Chief Minister of the State. 'Some people are saying whatever comes to mind without knowing what is happening in the country,' he said. A plant would take time to become a tree and then to bear fruits, Mr. Palaniswami said, adding that any political organisation would also have to go through a similar process. Due to the hard work of late leaders M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK ruled the State for over three decades, Mr. Palaniswami said, listing the achievements of successive AIADMK governments. 'Many are ignorant of all this, and speak as if they have accomplished a Himalayan task,' he said. Pointing to former Ministers S.S. Vaigaichelvan and V. Somasundaram, who were accompanying him, Mr. Palaniswami said they, too, were recognised through their hard work. 'Some people think they have an influence on the people. They are talking as if the people could be saved only on their arrival. You all know whom I am referring to,' he said. Recalling the life and contributions of MGR and Jayalalithaa, Mr. Palaniswami said, 'Whoever intends to start a political party could do so only by praising our leaders.' Recalled his public life spanning five decades, he said, 'Some people are not even working, but are already expecting results. It would not last.' Reiterating that the AIADMK was the only force that could defeat the DMK, he said his party had the highest number of workers.
