Chesterton's Alexia Franco recalls something that one of her travel softball coaches said.
The words continue to resonate with her.
''You don't want to be just good, you want to be great, because there's too much average in this world,'' Franco said. 'As a softball player, that's really important — or as any athletic player in general.'
Franco has been putting those words into practice this season. The senior center fielder is batting .347 with a team-high eight doubles, the first two homers of her four-year starting career, 10 RBIs, a team-high 26 runs scored and a team-high five stolen bases after Chesterton topped Merrillville in a Duneland Athletic Conference game on Thursday to close the regular season.
'I've been hitting a lot more this year,' Franco said. 'I've been consistent. I've been focusing more on little things in my batting. On top of that, defense-wise, I've always been a really good defensive player, I'd like to say.
'But it's just been a lot more fun this year. I like being with this group of girls. It's been really nice playing center field with them. The girls are really positive, and they really help keep the team up.'
Franco and the Trojans (11-11, 8-6) will play Valparaiso in the semifinals of the Class 4A Chesterton Sectional on Wednesday after the DAC rivals split two games during the regular season. Chesterton has posted its most victories since going 14-7-1 in 2019, the last time the team won a sectional championship.
'We can win sectionals,' Franco said. 'We're doing really well up to this point, and it's definitely within our reach. We have to stay consistent. We don't want to let that 'want to win' die down.
'I've just been going in with a good mental attitude. I like being at practice. I like being around my teammates. I want to do good for not just myself. I want to do good for them. I want to be a team player and do my best out there and really bring all that I can to this team.'
Franco has been at the forefront as the Trojans have pushed forward under first-year coach Erin Cochran. A 2001 Chesterton graduate, Cochran played for LouAnn Hopson, the late Indiana Softball Hall of Fame member who founded the program in 1984 and led it for 35 seasons.
'As a senior, she has been a great leader out there,' Cochran said of Franco. 'She is very positive with everyone. If someone starts to feel negative, she always wants to bring them up and get back into the game. One-hundred percent, she's been our best leader.'
Franco debuted for Chesterton as a shortstop but shifted to the outfield during her freshman season. She actually grew up as a catcher.
'I was catcher up until I was around 14 years old, and then bad knees and all,' she said. 'They put me in the outfield, and that was my first time playing out there. I'm pretty quick, and it worked out really well, and I've loved it ever since. I love playing center field.'
Franco, whose younger sister Emilia is a freshman on the junior varsity team, intends to study dentistry at Indiana University Northwest and become either a dentist or a hygienist. She has already gained experience in the field during the past two years through a program that includes classes at Portage and an internship at a dental office in Chesterton.
'I get to assist the dentist or the hygienist,' Franco said. 'I get to help them suction or perio charting, which is gumline charting, stock and sterilize instruments. A lot of things.'
Franco does a lot of things for the Trojans too.
'She's done a great job for us this year,' Cochran said.

Yankees face lineup questions with Stanton's rehab approaching

Yankees face lineup questions with Stanton's rehab approaching originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Giancarlo Stanton is finally inching closer to a return to the New York Yankees' lineup, but the team still faces some lineup puzzles when he is finally back. Advertisement Stanton could start rehab games as soon as next Tuesday with the Somerset Patriots, Randy Miller reports. If all goes well, he might be back in pinstripes for the Yankees' June 16 series opener against the Angels at Yankee Stadium. It's been a long road back for Stanton. New York Yankees star Giancarlo StantonJay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images He's been out since January with severe inflammation in both elbows, a setback that's kept one of New York's most feared hitters off the field. Stanton's career numbers speak for themselves: a .257 batting average, 429 home runs, and over 1,100 RBIs. When healthy, he's a game-changer, as he showed last year in the playoffs. Advertisement But injuries have chipped away at his time on the field, he's averaged fewer than 95 games a season since joining the Yankees. In the meantime, rookie Ben Rice has stepped up in a big way. This season, Rice is hitting .245 with 12 homers and an .841 OPS. He's become a flexible piece for manager Aaron Boone, rotating between first base, designated hitter, and even catcher at times. Andy Martino of SNY reports that Rice will continue this rotation, especially with Stanton's return looming. Martino reports that there is no plan for Rice to play any other position, despite the wild speculation about him moving to third base. And then there's Paul Goldschmidt, a veteran bat anchoring the lineup. After a career-worst season in 2024, Goldschmidt has had a resurgence. He is hitting .282 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs through early June. Advertisement The Yankees will have to juggle all three in the lineup. Between Stanton, Rice, and Goldschmidt, they will have to figure out how to keep their power potent without sacrificing lineup balance or player health. There has been a lot of speculation and consternation among the Yankees fanbase about this first-world problem. Yankees manager Aaron Boone has long been a proponent of proactively resting players, particularly older players or those with injury history. He will sure use this to protect both Stanton and Goldschmidt down the stretch, while still letting Rice develop. Clemson baseball lands promising transfer from SEC program

Clemson baseball lands promising transfer from SEC program For the second time this week, the Clemson Tigers have added a player from an SEC baseball roster via the transfer portal. Infielder Bryce Clavon, who transfers after one season with the Georgia Bulldogs, announced his commitment to Clemson in a post to social media Saturday. Clavon was a freshman for coach Wes Johnson's team in 2025, appearing in 27 games and making one start. He joins former Alabama Crimson Tide pitcher Ariston Veasey as SEC players to transfer to Clemson this week. A right-handed hitter who's listed as 6-feet, 187 pounds, Clavon committed to Georgia after graduating from Kell High School in Stockbridge (Ga.). Perfect Game ranked him the No. 4 overall shortstop in the nation coming out of high school. Clavon was 5-for-15 with a home run, a double and a triple last season. He was also 2-of-2 on stolen base attempts. Clavon played behind starting shortstop Kolby Branch and did not appear in the game when Clemson and Georgia met as top five opponents on April 22 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, a 3-0 Tigers shutout victory. Clavon is the Tigers' second commitment in the transfer portal Saturday. Earlier in the day, shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger committed to Clemson from Appalachian State. Lichtenberger was the Sun Belt conference Freshman of the Year in 2025, batting .341 with 13 doubles, three home runs and 44 RBIs. Clemson has added four players via the transfer portal since their season-ending loss to Kentucky in the Clemson Regional last Sunday. In addition to Clavon, Lichtenberger and Veasey, the Tigers also added right-hander Hayden Simmerson from Division II Catawba College in North Carolina. Clemson makes a huge move in the transfer portal landing shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger

Clemson makes a huge move in the transfer portal landing shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger Clemson baseball has landed one of its first portal additions of the offseason. App State shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger has committed to the Tigers after making a visit to campus on Thursday, according to multiple sources. The standout freshman brings immediate impact potential after an impressive debut season in Boone. Lichtenberger was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2025, hitting .341 with 13 doubles, three home runs, two triples and 44 RBIs. He recorded 24 multi-hit games, reached base in 46 of 52 regular-season contests—including the first 34 games of the year—and also swiped seven bases in nine attempts. His 70 hits ranked among the top 10 in the conference. With Andrew Ciufo exhausting his eligibility, Clemson had a clear need at shortstop heading into next season. While incoming freshman Dax Kilby is a highly regarded option, there's a strong chance he's selected in July's MLB Draft, potentially opening the door for Lichtenberger to step into a starting role right away.
