Ilaiyaraaja's plea to move copyright case to Chennai denied by Supreme Court

India Today29-07-2025
On Monday, July 28, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja, who had sought to transfer a copyright dispute concerning over 500 of his musical compositions from the Bombay High Court to the Madras High Court.A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria declined to accept the arguments put forth by senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing the composer, in favour of moving the case to the Madras High Court. At the outset of the hearing, counsel for Sony Music Entertainment informed the bench that the company had originally filed the case in the Bombay High Court at a time when no related matter was pending before the Madras High Court.advertisement"The plea is dismissed," the bench stated.
The legal dispute originated from a lawsuit filed by Sony Music Entertainment India in 2022 before the Bombay High Court, seeking an injunction to prevent Ilaiyaraaja Music N Management Pvt Ltd (IMMPL) from using 536 musical compositions.Sony asserts that it acquired the rights to these works through Oriental Records and Echo Recording, entities with which Ilaiyaraaja has been involved in protracted litigation.IMMPL, on the other hand, contends that 310 of the 536 disputed compositions are already under judicial consideration in a concurrent case pending before the Madras High Court. That case, initially pursued by Ilaiyaraaja in 2014 against Echo Recording, contests their ownership claims over his compositions and seeks formal recognition of the composer's moral and economic rights under the Copyright Act. The 2014 suit in the Madras High Court led to a landmark judgement in 2019, which upheld Ilaiyaraaja's moral and special rights as a composer.Ilaiyaraaja is regarded as one of India's most prolific music composers, having composed over 7,500 songs across more than 1,500 films.- EndsMust Watch

Vijay Deverakonda-starrer Kingdom's distributor approaches Madras High Court seeking police protection for theatres in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu theatrical rights holder of Vijay Deverakonda starrer 'Kingdom' has approached the Madras High Court to restrain Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator S. Seeman and his followers from interfering with the screening of the movie in cinema halls on the alleged ground that it portrays the Tamil Eelam issue in a derogatory manner. The writ petitioner SSI Production also sought a direction to the Director General of Police, Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police and Coimbatore Commissioner of Police to provide adequate police protection to the cinema theatres screening the movie. The petition has been listed for hearing before Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). Filing an affidavit in support of the writ petition, K. Abhilash of SSI Production stated that the Telugu movie 'Kingdom' had been produced with a huge budget of ₹130 crore. It had been produced by Sithara Entertainments and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, who had received the national award for his previous film Jersey under the best Telugu film category. Further stating that famous music composer Anirudh Ravichander from Tamil Nadu had scored the music for 'Kingdom', the deponent said the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) too had issued a certificate on July 30, 2025 for its theatrical release. However, on August 4, 2025, Mr. Seeman had raised a complaint about the movie by tweeting on his X handle. This had led to his followers issuing threats to some of the cinema theatre owners in Chennai and Coimbatore against the screening of the movie. 'Some cinema hall owners have already expressed apprehension and reluctance to continue screening the film due to the fear of law and order disturbances... It has also created fear among the general Public and theatre staff,' the deponent said. Pointing out the CBFC was the statutory authority to certify whether a film was fit for public exhibition or not, the petitioner said the political parties could not take law into their hands and prevent the exhibition of movies. It would amount to curtailing the fundamental right to speech and expression and the police were duty bound to interfere when such a right gets threatened, it added. The petitioner also relied upon the Supreme Court verdicts in S. Rangarajan versus P. Jagjivan Ram (1989) and Nachiketa Walhekar versus CBFC (2018) wherein it had been held that once a film had been cleared for public screening by the CBFC, it could not be subjected to extrajudicial censorship or prevented from public screening by private individuals or organisations.

"2025 Ka Mera Toh Pehla Tha": Yuzvendra Chahal Jokes About His Divorce With Dhanashree Verma

Indian cricket team player Yuzvendra Chahal came out with a funny reply when asked about people taking cricketers' divorces as a joke. In the past couple of years, three cricketers, including Chahal, have got divorced. Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan are the other two cricketers, who have also got separated legally with their respective ex-wives. Chahal was on Raj Shamani's podcast when he said with a laugh, "I think ek sath bahut saare ho gaye. Har field mein ho gaye. 2025 ka mera toh pehla tha. (I think many divorces have happened at once. They are happening in every field. Mine was the first of 2025.)" "There has been many separations. This has given people an opportunity to laugh at others. They got an opportunity to become gyaani baba (wise man). When you don't know about somebody's life, it is easy to type (on social media)," he added. Chahal and Dhanashree Verma in March this year were granted the decree of divorce by the Mumbai family court. The couple tied the knot in December 2020. As per their petition, they separated in June 2022. On February 5, they filed a joint petition before the family court seeking divorce by mutual consent. The Bombay High Court in March requested the family court to decide the divorce plea. The high court also waived the six-month cooling period stipulated for every couple after filing of the divorce plea under the Hindu Marriage Act. Chahal and Verma had filed a joint petition before the high court, seeking that the cooling-off period be waived in their case as they applied for divorce by mutual consent. The petition had also prayed for a direction to the family court to decide the divorce petition expeditiously. The couple challenged the family court order of February 20 refusing to waive the cooling-off period. Under the Hindu Marriage Act, a couple has to undergo six-month cooling-off period before divorce is granted. The objective is to provide time for exploring the possibility of reconciliation. The family court had refused to waive the cooling-off period on the ground that there was only partial compliance with the consent terms which required Chahal to pay Rs 4.75 crore to Dhanashree at that time. He had paid Rs 2.37 crore, the family court noted. It also cited a report of a marriage counsellor which said there was only partial compliance with the mediation efforts. But the high court held that there was compliance with the consent terms, as they provided for the payment of the second installment of permanent alimony only after the decree of divorce was obtained.
