Local nonprofit provides donations to thousands hurt by Texas floods
Mission Central of Mechanicsburg has been donating to those affected by disasters nationwide since 2002. Today, they packed a truck with 900 sanitation buckets, looking to assist in cleaning and laundry, as well as 2,000 menstrual hygiene kits.
Executive Director Hope Harrison says the most important part of disaster relief is listening.
'For us, it's very important that we wait until they get to the ground and find out what the needs actually are, and so right now those 3 things are the biggest needs,' said Harrison. 'As time moves on, we'll hear more disaster relief, we're gonna hear more, and it will change.'
The truck is expected to arrive in Texas tomorrow. Mission Central plans to send another in the coming days, as they accept donations year-round.

This Florida company's imaging tool helps speed up natural disaster recovery efforts
It has, to date, been a calm hurricane season in the state of Florida, but any resident of the Southeast will tell you that the deeper into summer we go, the more dangerous it becomes. There's no stopping Mother Nature's wrath, but a Florida-based tech company has come up with a way to help state officials begin recovery efforts after a storm blows through. The technology could eventually be used for other natural disasters, such as the recent flash floods in Texas' Hill Country and the devastating fires in California. Last fall, Urban SDK, a Jacksonville, Florida-based software company that aggregates traffic data to help public works departments spot problems more easily, launched HALO—a new service that quickly highlights the most pressing problem areas after a storm passes. As soon as winds drop below 40 mph and the sun is out, the company tasks satellites and deploys helicopters, drones, and fixed-wing aircraft to gather aerial imagery of the storm's impact. Those images are processed through its computer vision model, helping state and local officials identify areas where roads are blocked by fallen trees, flooding, or severe damage.

What's The Best Way To Photograph The Northern Lights? Smartphone users should use night mode and avoid using flash if they want to photograph the northern lights, while people with traditional cameras should use low apertures while shooting. Wide-angle lenses and tripods can also help capture good images. Key Background The northern lights have been active in the U.S. for over a year now, benefiting from the peak of the sun's 11-year solar cycle, which generates coronal mass ejections and solar flares that contribute to higher auroral activity. NASA forecasts say the lights will remain active into next year and eventually decrease in strength as the solar cycle moves forward.
