ISTANBUL - US President Donald Trump said Thursday that he may increase his 25 per cent tariff on imported cars in the "not-too-distant future" to further protect the country's automotive workers, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
"To further defend our auto workers, I imposed a 25 per cent tariff on all foreign automobiles, and investments in American auto manufacturing are surging because of it," Trump said at the White House.
Stating that tariffs should be paid for cars not produced in the US, he said: "This could have been done by any of the presidents. I did it with China. The reason why you don't have Chinese cars here is because I imposed it (the tariff) in my last term."

"To further defend our auto workers, I imposed this 25 per cent tariff on all foreign cars, and I might go up with that tariff in the not-too-distant future," he noted.
"The higher you go, the more likely they are to build a plant here," Trump added.
His remarks were made during a White House event aimed at opposing a California state regulation that would phase out petrol-powered cars and end the sale of new ones by 2035.
Trump boasted about forthcoming investments from Ford and General Motors, attributing those announcements to his tariffs. Nonetheless, international automakers such as Hyundai have cautioned that they might need to increase prices due to the tariffs.
The president has enacted - and retracted - tariffs on different industries, including automobiles and steel and aluminium, while warning of further tariffs on pharmaceuticals and certain other imports.
He imposed a 10 per cent blanket tariff on all imports, simultaneously announcing and then retracting increased tariff rates on several other countries. - BERNAMA

US Marines detain Army veteran in LA as protests over Trump's policies grow

Marines detain man for nearly two hours, hand him over to DHS Some 1,8000 anti-Trump demonstrations planned today LA County sheriff says fewer than 1 per cent of demonstrators causing harm LOS ANGELES, June 14 — US Marines deployed to Los Angeles made their first detention of a civilian on Friday, part of a rare use of military force to support domestic police and coming ahead of national protests over President Donald Trump's military parade in Washington. The detention of a the man, a US Army veteran and an immigrant who obtained US citizenship, punctuated a series of highly unusual events that have appealed to Trump supporters but outraged other Americans who are demonstrating discontent in the streets. Trump ordered the Marines to Los Angeles in response to street protests over immigration raids, joining National Guard forces already deployed to the city over the objection of California's governor. Trump said troops were necessary to quell the protests — a contention that state and local officials dispute. About 1,800 protests are scheduled across the US on Saturday in opposition to the Washington military parade that marks the 250th anniversary of the US Army and coincides with Trump's 79th birthday. It was also unusual when federal agents forcibly removed and handcuffed a US Senator on Thursday as he interrupted a press conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Trump has thrived politically on unconventional tactics. But Democratic opponents are starting to push back. Fifteen protests are expected in Los Angeles alone, Mayor Karen Bass said, urging people to remain peaceful. 'We are here today because the raids have caused fear and panic,' Bass said, joined by two dozen elected officials to oppose the raids and military presence. 'Can the federal government come in and seize power from a state and from a local jurisdiction? How much will the American people put up with?' About 200 Marines were assigned to protect the Wilshire Federal Building in Los Angeles, part of a battalion of 700 Marines sent to support the National Guard, said Army Major General Scott Sherman, who is in command of both the National Guard and Marine forces. The Marines and National Guard deployed in Los Angeles are assigned to protect federal property and personnel and may temporarily detain people, but they are required to turn them over to civilian law enforcement for any formal arrest. Reuters images showed Marines restraining his hands with zip ties and then handing him over to civilians from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) nearly two hours later. US military confirmed the detention after being presented with Reuters images, in the first known detention by active duty troops. The detained man, Marcos Leao, 27, an immigrant and a US Army veteran, said after he was released that he was told to get on the ground upon venturing into a restricted area, as he crossed a line of yellow tape to avoid walking around the building. Leao, who said he is Portuguese and Angolan and became a US citizen through the military, said he complied with all commands and that the Marines apparently mistook him for a protester when he simply had business with the Veterans Administration office inside the building. 'They treated me very fairly,' Leao said, adding that he was told, 'Understand, this is a whole stressful situation for everybody, and we all have a job.' Asked about the incident, the US military's Northern Command spokesperson said active duty forces 'may temporarily detain an individual in specific circumstances,' and that the detention would end when the person is transferred to civilian law enforcement. DHS referred press queries to the Northern Command. Meanwhile, Los Angeles demonstrations continued for an eighth straight day, after they were sparked last Friday by a series of immigrations raids. The demonstrations have been concentrated in the downtown area, and fewer than 1 per cent of those present have caused problems, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. Some people have been charged with assaulting a police officer, looting, or damaging property. There was a 'big difference' between legitimate protesters and 'people who are coming out to cause problems,' Luna said at a press conference in which law enforcement officers said they welcomed peaceful protests on Saturday but warned they would arrest those who harm others or damage property. Bass implemented a curfew over one square mile (2.5 square km) of the downtown area, which officials said has been useful for maintaining order. Bass said there was 'no termination date' for the curfew. 'We are hoping that if the cause of the turmoil ends, which is stopping the raids, then I can almost guarantee you the curfew will go away in short order,' Bass said. — Reuters

Global Economic Plates Shifting: Investors Urged To Diversify Away From US Asset Concentration

The first half of 2025 will be remembered as a pivotal period where global economic tectonic plates shifted, setting the stage for a more balanced international order, according to a recent analysis by Standard Chartered Bank. The report suggests that the United States has scaled back its leadership role, compelling Europe and China to assume greater responsibility for driving global growth. For investors, Standard Chartered highlights three crucial takeaways: The 'Trump Put' is Alive: This implies that market discipline effectively constrains the Trump administration's policies. Investors should therefore avoid panic sales triggered by unpredictable political events and instead focus on hard economic data and investor positioning. China's Found US Vulnerability: China's strategic use of rare earth export restrictions has led to a preliminary agreement with the US, significantly reducing the likelihood of an all-out trade war. Germany is Finally Reflating: Europe's largest economy is now poised to contribute more significantly to global growth, driven by increased infrastructure and defense spending. These last two points, according to Standard Chartered, deliver a salient message to investors: avoid over-concentration in US assets. The bank suggests that diversifying into European banking and industrial sector equities, along with increased Japanese Yen (JPY) exposure, could be effective strategies to lower US concentration. The JPY and gold are also expected to benefit from any potential escalation in the Middle East. 'Trump Put' Curbs Market Volatility Standard Chartered's analysis notes that the significant scaling back of Trump's tariffs, following a market downturn in US stocks, bonds, and the dollar, confirms their core thesis: market discipline serves as a crucial check on the administration's policies. Furthermore, efforts by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to re-incentivize US commercial banks to hold government bonds and increased government bond buybacks are expected to cap bond yields, addressing a key investor concern. Given these policy backstops, investors are advised to resist panicking during event-driven volatility stemming from 'unpredictable' US policy. Instead, the focus should remain on economic data, earnings reports, and investor positioning. Recent data, indicating a healthy but slowing US job market and continued disinflation despite tariffs, raises the probability of Federal Reserve rate cuts in the second half of the year. With investor positioning remaining uncrowded, there is still scope for upside in equities. Rare Earths Shift Trade War Dynamics China's dominant position in rare earths, producing approximately 60% and processing around 90% of the world's supply – crucial for defense, electric vehicles, robotics, and high-end electronics – has proven to be a strategic leverage point. In April, China restricted the exports of several rare earths and magnets in retaliation for US tariffs. This move eventually compelled the US back to the negotiating table, culminating in a preliminary agreement in London this week. China agreed to accelerate rare earth exports in exchange for the US easing controls on chip exports and reissuing visas for students, a development that significantly reduces the near-term risk of an all-out trade war. Germany's Reflation Aids Global Rebalancing The analysis points out that the Trump administration's policies have inadvertently pushed Germany, Europe's largest economy, to take on greater defense responsibilities and drive European growth. The current Merz-led coalition's plans for infrastructure and defense spending could potentially boost German growth by 2 percentage points annually over the next decade. With China also easing its fiscal policy, the significant gap in fiscal policy support between the US and the rest of the world, which largely drove the 'US exceptionalism' narrative in recent years, is expected to narrow. Investors are already beginning to factor this into their estimations, leading to a narrowing of earnings estimates between the US and the Euro area for 2026. Standard Chartered concludes by reiterating that while the US will remain a leader in delivering strong investor returns through innovation, productivity, and consumer power, its outsized performance relative to the rest of the world is likely to converge. As this gap narrows, funds that flowed from Europe and other regions to the US over the past decade are anticipated to return, suggesting a further decline in the US dollar. The overarching message for investors remains clear: diversify, diversify, diversify. Related
