Dilip Doshi showed it's never too late to succeed

Dilip Doshi
New Delhi:
The Seventies were barren years for East Zone, a minnow in domestic cricket those days. No cricketer from Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Assam, the four states which combined to form the zone in Duleep Trophy then, found a place in a Test playing XI.
In 1979, the drought was broken by an aging left-arm spinner from Bengal, who in his broad-frame glasses looked like a professor but bowled with the parsimony and carefulness of a book-keeper.
Dilip Doshi, who passed away in London on Monday following a heart attack, made his debut a few months short of 32, but ensured that he left the scene only after scalping a respectable 114 wickets in 33 Tests.

India's bowling, for much of the 1960s and 1970s, revolved around Bedi, Chandrashekhar, Prasanna and Venkataraghavan, masters of their respective spin craft.
Together the Fab Four ensured that others of the tribe seldom (VV Kumar, 2 Tests) or never (Rajinder Goel, Padmakar Shivalkar) stepped a foot inside the Test door. A few years younger, Doshi escaped their plight. He was delayed but not denied.
In his debut Test in Chennai, the Rajkot-born cricketer took eight wickets, including 6/103 in the first innings, against Kim Hughes' Australians. The Test was drawn but his second eight-wicket haul, including 5/43 in the first innings, ensured an innings victory for India at Wankhede.

Wankhede turned out to be his favourite venue. Doshi's six wickets (3/52 & 3/42) were key to India's triumph over Asif Iqbal's fancied Pakistan in a low-scoring encounter. This was also the series when the left-arm spinner's 18 wickets combined with
Kapil Dev
's 32 as India pulled off an unlikely 2-0 triumph in 1979.
Doshi wasn't much of a bat, but valued his wicket. At Eden Garden in the same series, he hung on for a priceless 61 minutes to defy a bowling attack led by
Imran Khan
. His last-wicket stand of 33 with Karsan Ghavri ensured that Pakistan returned winless. Like batting, fielding wasn't his strength either. But cricket fans were always fascinated to see him 'bowl' his throws from the deep.
As he wrote in his autobiography
'Spin Punch'
, Doshi learnt much of his cricket in the 'paras' of Kolkata.
He wanted to play the game at the highest level after watching Rohan Kanhai 'play that delectable innings' at Eden Garden in 1958. 'Later I was to see Salim Durrani bowl his teasing and easy style of deception and somehow I knew that I wanted to be a slow left-arm destroyer,' he wrote.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Christopher Martin Jenkins's biographical dictionary of world cricketers describes Doshi as 'a gentle intelligent character, philosophical and humorous behind a studious front...'
It further says, '...less liquid of movement than the great Bedi, Doshi nevertheless had an easy action, turning the ball sharply and bowled with exceptional accuracy. Mixing flight and pace thoughtfully, he lured batsmen to destruction in a wide variety of cricket, not least in Test matches.
'
What earned him grudging respect, even from his detractors, was his commitment to the team. Doshi played with a 'spiral fracture of the first metatarsal' against Australia in Melbourne in 1981.
Who would believe today that he bowled an astonishing 74 overs in that game? His thriftiness bottled Australia when India was defending just 142. Kapil Dev, who bowled with a pulled thigh muscle after taking pain-killing injections, produced an outstanding 5/28 to bowl out the hosts for 83.
Doshi's match-figures: 52-14-109-3 and 22-9-33-2.
The spinner also enjoyed a fruitful run in county cricket with Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. During this period, he formed a close friendship with rock band Rolling Stone's frontman
Mick Jagger
.
His Test career ended in 1983.
In his autobiography, the spinner writes with some bitterness about the circumstances in which he quit. But ending a career that started so late with a century of Test wickets was no small feat. A key takeaway from the cricketer's sporting life is: grab your chance whenever it comes; it's never too late to make success in your life.
Doshi was seen attending the World Test Championship final earlier this month. His sudden death was mourned by many on social media.

Digital tops TV in IPL 2025 viewership: JioStar-MPA report

Digital platforms outpaced television in viewership during the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to JioStar 's report 'TATA IPL 2025: A Year of Firsts', released in partnership with Media Partners Asia (MPA) at the APOS conference in Bali. The report highlights a key shift in audience behaviour, with digital reach recorded at 652 million—higher than the 537 million viewers on television. The final match alone attracted 426 million viewers across platforms, with 237 million tuning in via digital and 189 million on TV. In total, the tournament reached 1.19 billion people, driven by strong digital adoption, enhanced features, and wider regional access. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo 'This IPL, not only have we reached a billion viewers across platforms, we have also managed to make this IPL the most monetised edition of the event and also the most monetised sporting event ever in India across advertising and subscription revenue,' said Sanjog Gupta, CEO – Sports & Live Experiences, JioStar. JioHotstar, the digital platform carrying IPL matches, reported growth to 300 million subscribers and over 1.04 billion Android app downloads. Peak concurrency reached 55.2 million, with a total of 514 billion minutes of viewing time across the tournament. So can you create infinite hyper-personalised journeys for each and every fan instead of serving one streaming experience to all—and that's the core tenet of the platform.' Women made up 47% of the TV audience on Star Sports, and regional language viewership saw significant growth. Telugu feed consumption rose by 87%, Tamil by 52%, Kannada by 65%, Hindi by 31%, Bengali by 34%, and Haryanvi by 47%. The report also noted strong engagement on social platforms, with 3.83 billion interactions recorded. On mobile, 44% of viewers took part in the interactive play-along game 'Jeeto Dhan Dhana Dhan', while many accessed features such as MaxView 3.0, multi-angle cameras, and voice-assisted search on Connected TVs. Accessibility and technological innovation were also part of JioStar's offering. Viewers had access to AI-generated match highlights, real-time commentary translations, Indian Sign Language interpretation, and audio descriptive commentary for the visually impaired. He described JioStar's goal as building 'a platform with infinite consumer journeys by creating a user experience which is inclusive, intuitive, interactive, and immersive.' Commercially, IPL 2025 attracted over 425 advertisers, including 270 new entrants across 40 categories. Thirty-two brands used third-party tools such as Nielsen to track campaign performance. Gupta noted, 'India's growing influence in sport is nothing but a reflection of India's growing significance on the global stage, driven by a strong consumption-oriented economy.' 'Think twice...': Ravi Shastri fires warning to Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill & Co on Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah with his captain Shubman Gill (Photo by) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri suggests India should reconsider resting Jasprit Bumrah for upcoming Tests against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, following India's five-wicket defeat at Headingley where Bumrah took five wickets. The team's current plan, as stated by head coach Gautam Gambhir , is to have Bumrah play only three of the five Tests for workload management. Bumrah recorded match figures of 5-140 from 43.4 overs in the Headingley Test, with all his wickets coming in the first innings. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "If he was looking at a rest, you may have to think twice. If you don't have him and then go 2-0 down it could be an uphill task," Shastri said on Sky Sports. India Outplayed at Headingley | England Go 1-0 Up in the Series | IND vs ENG 1st Test The other Indian seamers - Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna - struggled with combined figures of 9-482 in 92 overs, which might influence the decision to play Bumrah in the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2. "This will be a tough pill for India to swallow. You don't get in positions like this very often and blow it from there. They had a chance to take England out of the contest and dictate terms," Shastri commented. "They have to learn and they need more bottle from the tail, for them to be stubborn and put a price tag on their wicket. There is a big role for the coaching staff to take the positives. As a captain, Gill has done more than can be asked of him. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo He got a hundred in his first Test in charge and the dropped catches (and collapses) are not in his control," he added. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Former England captain Nasser Hussain provided his assessment of Gill's captaincy and India's performance. "I saw someone finding his way. He didn't quite have that on-field aura of Rohit and (Virat Kohli). I thought he followed the ball a lot and was reactive rather than proactive. When Rohit and Kohli captained, you looked down and you immediately knew who was in charge but when I looked down in this game I saw two or three captains, captaincy by committee," Hussain observed. "But India lost from two things Gill couldn't control - drops and collapses. The collapses concern me. In India they have had spin-bowling all-rounders that are magnificent - Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel - but in England they are still looking for a seam-bowling all-rounder who can bat. If they keep going 6-31 and 7-41 this could be a quick series," he concluded. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here
