New Mexico's Spaceport America looks up and into the future
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Spaceport America is the first purpose-built commercial spaceport in the world — but its executive director has a portfolio of ideas to further grow the launch complex.
Already home to an array of commercial space industry tenants, such as Virgin Galactic, SpinLaunch, Up Aerospace, and Prismatic, Spaceport America is a "rocket-friendly environment of 6,000 square miles of restricted airspace, low population density, a 12,000-foot by 200-foot runway, vertical launch complexes, and about 340 days of sunshine and low humidity," the organization boasts on its website.
Scott McLaughlin is an engineer, drawing upon a past of design and business marketing to help determine how best to grow Spaceport America, an inland spot in southern New Mexico desert that offers 18,000 acres adjacent to the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range. Space.com caught up with McLaughlin in an exclusive interview during the Space Foundation's 40th Space Symposium, to gain a perspective on the Spaceport America of now and a look at what's glimmering on the horizon and assuring the sprawling complex is a vibrant and vital part of America's aerospace infrastructure.
Space.com: How's your outlook for Spaceport America, eyeing it as a good place for orbital launch and reentry?
McLaughlin: We're trying to be a site as ready as we can and one that anticipates the market, trying to get ahead of that market. We have distinct areas of the spaceport, but not so distinct that we can't do different things at different times.
In our vertical launch area [VLA], we also are looking at testing of things that could explode or crash. We're focused on getting water to that location, and also have a facility that protects operations there — like payload processing — from the sun, rain and weather. We are trying to develop the VLA to be a real orbital vertical launch site.
Space.com: How about supporting horizontal launch?
McLaughlin: That's where we are getting a lot of interest. We're expanding access roads and about to build a hangar that acts as a security center, a STEM [education] center, and leasable office space. It would also offer a small conference area; and handle small vehicle and payload processing. That's a big change for us.
Space.com: You noted market changes. What changes do you see that make Spaceport America even more viable today?
McLaughlin: I think opening ourselves up to doing different kinds of work. We're more like a civilian test range now. We've got high-altitude UAVs [Unmanned Aerial Vehicles]. We're willing to do engine production.
We believe we're about to sign a data center, one that's able to provide services to our customers who want low-latency, artificial intelligence, or high-powered computing. You'll be able to rent some virtual machines and do your own thing and have it be instantaneous at the spaceport.
So I think being more broadminded about what we can do at the spaceport is helping generate customers and revenue.
Space.com: Over the years, people have been attracted to Spaceport America due to the suborbital flights of Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic. How's that relationship?
McLaughlin: Our goal is to see Virgin Galactic fly in a year or so, hopefully flying twice a week, and that will have a big impact on the spaceport.
Space.com: That impact also includes friends and families, no?
McLaughlin: It does. It looks like each passenger brings close to 20 others. So you multiply 20 times 6 passengers onboard the spaceship, times two flights a week, times 54 weeks. That's a lot of people in the area to explore other parts of New Mexico!
Space.com: Projecting into the near-future, what other endeavors are in the offing?
McLaughlin: Again, we're trying to be open-minded as we're partnered with White Sands Missile Range to use that airspace.
We're even looking at things like an electromagnetic pulse facility. It's a customer that I can't identify yet.
And our long-term goal is orbital launch. But we need a vehicle that is designed for orbital launch, either a single-stage-to-orbit with some nice abort modes, or a vehicle that might have wings which would make a nice abort mode. So we're talking to vehicle developers that are thinking the same thing.
Unfortunately for us, they will have to test and prove that technology, probably over water. But once that technology is proven then we'd be a great site for both takeoff and reentry.
Space.com: How is the prospect of reentry into Spaceport America?
McLaughlin: We are working on a reentry license too. We recently discussed this with specialists and we think we have a site relatively close to the spaceport that's flat and free of mesquite bushes and such, so we can do capsule return and other types of return. And of course we have the runway. So I'd think we'd be the only spaceport that does vertical and horizontal launch and reentry.

Space.com: Being an inland spaceport, given ocean-neighboring launch sites, how do you pitch the advantages?
McLaughlin: We're never going to have the throughput that the Cape in Florida has. But we'll be a good alternative especially if you're going to do a small to medium-sized launch, and you need to do it quickly, and perhaps do it more securely than you would if you were to fly over water. That's why the Department of Defense is showing interest in the inland spaceport.
Space.com: In your marketing campaign for Spaceport America, what are your top-tier take-away messages for potential customers?
McLaughlin: We're very proud of Virgin Galactic and proud they have continued their development in spite of the difficulty of taking humans to space. But at the same time, so many people have connected Spaceport America only with Virgin Galactic.
The story we have to tell is that we have a lot more space and we have a lot more customers. We have much bigger aspirations beyond Virgin Galactic, and in fact, we hope that Virgin Galactic might be part of that someday, like point-to-point travel or going into orbit.
At Spaceport America we have a much larger vision. We're trying to demonstrate that to both our stakeholders and our customers. We do a lot of cool stuff, and that makes a big difference.

I ditched my laptop for an iPad – here's why it's a great solution for students

I've been a Mac user since before I went to University – and while I'm not going to give away my age by telling you quite how long that means I've been using MacBooks for, I'll give you a hint. My first MacBook was white, plastic and absolutely fantastic. I also still have it in a drawer somewhere. My current MacBook is a little newer than that model – it's the MacBook Pro M4 with the nano texture display – and is also excellent, especially for blocking out reflections. But, I recently decided to work abroad for a month this summer and rather than bringing my MacBook Pro with me, I swapped it out for an iPad. I may not be a student anymore, but here's what I learned in doing that – and five key reasons why an iPad is an ideal solution if you are and you're heading to (or back to) University or college. Apple Pencil makes note-taking a delight I'll be honest, I'm one of those people who still enjoys the old-fashioned pen and paper. But using Apple Pencil with an iPad is enough to convert me to digital notes. There are third-party stylus options – Logitech's Crayon, for example – but writing with Apple Pencil Pro on the iPad Air (M3) is a dream. The Smart Script feature on iPad means your handwriting is tidied up in real-time, too. The Apple Pencil Pro is lovely and light to use, has very low latency, so it feels as responsive as pen to paper – and it responds to pressure, too, so you can get different effects easily. A double-tap allows you to switch between tools, such as the pen type or eraser, and a squeeze can switch the line weight or colour of your handwriting. If you're drawing, you can also roll the Pencil Pro to change the orientation of the pen you've selected. For charging, the Pencil Pro snaps onto the side of your iPad magnetically and will appear in the Find My app on iPhone or iPad if, like me, you're very good at misplacing small things. There's a lot to be said for a touchscreen Despite Mac having been around for over 40 years now, Apple is yet to introduce a model with a touchscreen. There's a strong chance it never will. You can't miss something you've never had, so die-hard Mac users have never known any different. But if you have ever used a PC laptop with a touchscreen, it's a feature you will undoubtedly miss on Mac. An iPad does have a touchscreen, of course, as that's a key part of its function as a tablet. Both iPad Air and iPad Pro come in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, so there's the option for a bigger touchscreen within both those ranges. I must admit, I've come to really appreciate it since using an iPad over a Mac these last few weeks – and it's amazing how quickly you become reliant on it. Being able to just tap the screen to navigate can really speed up some everyday tasks. And the 13-inch models offer plenty of screen space for using a couple of different apps at the same time in Split View. iPadOS makes multi-tasking a breeze Speaking of Split View, multi-tasking on iPad is very simple – and it makes working between a couple of different apps exceptionally easy. You can be researching for a project on Safari, for example, whilst making notes on the other side of your iPad's screen without losing where you were in your research for even a second. It's also really easy to drag and drop between two apps if you need to. There are some areas where macOS for MacBooks is currently better than iPadOS for iPad, but with the new iPadOS 26 software coming out later in 2025, that's about to change. You will be able to opt to use Mac's window system on compatible iPad models, for example, as well as resize apps with grab handles and move them to wherever suits you on your screen. So the best is yet to come in how laptop-replacing an iPad will be. There will also be a menu bar at the top of your iPad screen with the new software. Preview is also coming to iPad, so you can view and edit PDFs. And you'll even be able to customise folders in the Files app with different colours. The current iPadOS is good, but if you want to supercharge your iPad experience, then download the iPadOS 26 beta to try out these new features before your course starts. Removable keyboard gives you flexibility All the benefits I have mentioned about switching to iPad so far have only required you to have an iPad, and consider investing in an Apple Pencil or stylus. Here I'm going to suggest you also get yourself a keyboard if you are planning on doing any University or college work on one, rather than just research or take notes. It's a real game-changer addition. The keyboards aren't cheap, especially not Apple's Magic Keyboard options for iPad Pro and iPad Air, but they are worth it. They will protect your iPad when you're not using it, but they also deliver a great typing experience with good key travel. So if you want to write an essay on your iPad, it won't be a chore – and feel much like using a laptop. The trackpads on the keyboard covers aren't as responsive as the built-in versions on Mac, I'll admit that, but they still do a great job and they make typing on an iPad light work. They also give your iPad a stand in case you want to take a break from studying and catch up on a box set binge without having to hold the tablet and, of course, they can be quickly removed to turn your iPad back into just a tablet. Lightweight enough to take anywhere The last point I'll make in favour of iPad over Mac is the exact reason I ditched my MacBook this summer – portability. I'm using the iPad Pro (M4) with nano texture display and I'm using the 13-inch model, which is just 5.3mm thick and weighs under 580g – so I can bring and use it anywhere. That's even truer of the 11-inch iPad Pro model, which is just 444g, while the iPad Air (M3) 11-inch is only 460g. By comparison, my 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4) is 15.5mm thick and weighs 1.55kg. So while still portable, it's more of a consideration if I'm out for the day and already have a full bag. All the iPad models are lightweight enough to take anywhere you want though, and their versatility means when you have one in your bag, you not only have a note-taking device, but a superb device for reading and watching – or, indeed, studies and work, should you need to.

Battlefield 6's open beta is already the most popular Battlefield of all time on Steam, and the platform's 44th most-played game ever

Since time immemorial, mankind has struggled with its nemesis and ultimate predator: the helicopter. No wonder, then, that in the wake of that trailer which exploded around 1.46 helicopters per minute, half the human race has apparently poured into the Battlefield 6 open beta, catapulting it into Steam's top-100 most-played games of all time (per SteamDB). In other words, it's instantly become Steam's most popular Battlefield launch ever. Though there is a caveat there: EA only recently started launching Battlefield games simultaneously on Steam. At time of writing, Battlefield 6 has just pipped the 300k player mark, sitting pretty at 308,310 concurrents (which is, naturally, also its all-time peak; the beta only opened up a couple of hours ago). That makes it the 44th most-played game on Steam of all time by concurrent players, right below Elden Ring Nightreign at 43 and—of all things—Skyrim at 45. That makes it, by some margin, Steam's most-played Battlefield ever. But like I said, take that with a grain of salt. We're only recently out of the dark days when EA hoarded its games into the EA App (née Origin) and didn't put them on Steam at all—it only crawled back to Valve's platform in 2020. That means every recent Battlefield except 2042 didn't benefit from the kind of launch-day rush that can goose a game's numbers. Even so, Battlefield 6 is leaving them in the dust. Battlefield 2042's open beta is Steam's second most-played entry in the series, but at a paltry all-time peak of 156,665 players, Battlefield 6 has already near-enough doubled that in just a couple of hours of availability. Battlefield 2042 full-launch count of 107,376, meanwhile, is barely visible in 6's rearview mirror. It's not going to stop there, of course, and I'd be astounded if Battlefield 6 didn't end up handily outstripping Nightreign and the games above it—Destiny 2, the Mecha Break demo, and OG Counter-Strike—in the near future. After all, I'm given to understand that this seems like a good Battlefield so far. PCG's FPS czar Morgan Park dared to hope that Battlefield is really back this time after his preview, and EA has been playing against character by making some actually popular decisions. For instance, letting players have classic class weapons and not forcing the lamentable EA App on you if you play on Steam. With Call of Duty festooned with garish skins and filled with unhappy players, it's all out there for Battlefield's taking.

These Science Fiction Novels Will Take You on an Epic Journey
Science fiction is a genre of vectors. Its stories are arrows tipped with science, fletched with 'what-if' and shot out of the present into the future. Some are warning shots, exposing the weak spots in our politics or social architecture. Many provide the kind of escapist fun I'd inhale as a kid — under the covers, by flashlight. And then there are the rare few that pierce the future square in the chest, a note dangling from the shaft that reads, 'I told you so.' For me, it is the science fiction cloaked in myth that carries the most power. Lest your mind careen toward elves on spaceships, let me clarify: I'm not talking about a subgenre here, or about cross-pollination with fantasy. For me, myth is a tone, imbued with the gravity of fate and eternal truth. Whether a lullaby of mankind's ancient cradle or a requiem for the collapse of stellar empires, these tales sing out from the mist to remind us of our nature. For the most part, the heroes of these novels inhabit dark, decaying worlds. Their epic journeys through that darkness have often helped me find the light. Here are a few of my favorites. The Book of the New Sun Wolfe's four-part saga feels like a relic of another epoch — scribbled in the midnight hollows of an abbey by a mad theologian, or summoned into being by the high priest of some fallen empire and beamed back to us across the millenniums. Set on a distant, dying Earth, the book (which was actually written by a Korean War vet living in Illinois in the 1980s) follows Severian, a torturer's apprentice exiled for the crime of mercy, as he wanders a world so far in the future that it has relapsed into medievalism. Science has become sorcery. Spaceports crumble to ruins. I have read this book at least five times and still struggle to succinctly sum it up. It is dense, archaic, feverish and beautiful — a meditation on the tragedy of mortals on an immortal stage that will haunt you long after its final page.
