Shohei Ohtani Makes Dodgers History in Win Against Padres originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani continues to rewrite the record books.
Ohtani made his long-awaited Dodgers pitching debut last night against the San Diego Padres, going one inning with one earned run allowed on two hits, zero strikeouts, and zero walks. He threw 28 pitches and 16 strikes.

This bizarre rehab assignment for Ohtani comes in the majors so as not to disrupt his stellar campaign at the plate (.300 batting average, 1.039 OPS, 190 OPS+, 25 home runs, 43 RBIs, 73 runs, 11 stolen bases).
Now that he has pitched for Los Angeles, he has further cemented his place in franchise lore. Here is the latest, via Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Aside from Ohtani's ridiculous talent and MLB career so far, the Drysdale element is perhaps even more impressive. A career Dodger (Brooklyn from 1956-57 and Los Angeles from 1958-69), Drysdale accumulated a 209-166 record, a 2.95 ERA, a 3.02 FIP, and won the 1962 National League Cy Young award.

His 29 career home runs rank sixth all-time among pitchers (this does not include Ohtani or Babe Ruth as the leaderboard is for pitchers active during a game). Still, Drysdale was a relatively impressive hitter, and it goes to show what a cheat code Ohtani is for the Dodgers.

While this is a fun milestone for him to check off, his health and development as a pitcher remain the most crucial aspects. This is a Los Angeles team plagued by pitching injuries, and settling Ohtani back into his two-way duties in a cautious fashion is a must.
The Dodgers need him at full strength if they are to repeat as World Series champions, and last night was a step in the right direction.

DAZN's Club World Cup Rights Cost $1B. Its Streams Are Free.

Global streaming company DAZN acquired the rights to this year's Club World Cup in late 2024 for a reported $1 billion. Starting Saturday, it will stream games from the tournament in 15 languages around the world—for free. It is a 'big bet' on using a single sports competition to drive sustained viewership long term, DAZN's global chief revenue officer Walker Jacobs said in an interview about the company's business strategy. Advertisement More from 'We think this is going to be a way to make DAZN much bigger in many, many parts of the world,' Jacobs said. UK-based DAZN launched in 2015, correctly forecasting a world where fans consumed sports on streaming services. It has since gobbled up sports rights including marquee European soccer in home markets, major boxing events and NFL action outside the U.S. The platform now streams more than 90,000 events a year in 200 countries. Jacobs said the Club World Cup will be particularly helpful for the North American business, as well as growth markets stretching from Latin America to Japan. DAZN has had a smaller footprint in the U.S. following the conclusion of a 2010s push that saw it grab former ESPN president John Skipper and sign an MLB rights deal for a reported $300 million in 2018. In recent years, it has expanded free and ad-supported access, such as streaming Women's Champions League soccer matches on YouTube. Advertisement While Club World Cup games are available for free, DAZN is reserving certain features in a 'FIFA Club World Cup premium' package for its $30 per month (or $225 per year) subscription tier, such as improved audio and picture quality, fewer ads, and extended highlights and replays. DAZN has also made sublicensing deals around the world—including with TNT Sports and Univision in the U.S.—worth 'hundreds of millions [of dollars],' according to chief executive of growth markets Pete Oliver. The company has inked new sponsorship deals to offset the cost it paid for the rights as well. DAZN plans to roll out two-box advertising that shows commercials during stoppages in play, a first in FIFA competition. Then there are additional tie-ups for content on TikTok and X. 'A subscription service business is something that is sort of a cornerstone of what our offering is and will continue to be,' Jacobs said. 'But in all of our rights deals, we're trying to make sure that we have the flexibility to window the content in the ways that are optimal to us and optimal to our business model.' ESPN Predicts Ohio State's W-L Record In 2025

ESPN Predicts Ohio State's W-L Record In 2025 originally appeared on The Spun. Despite losses to Oregon and Michigan last year, Ryan Day's team was able to right the ship and deliver Ohio State its first national title since 2014. Advertisement Now with the 2025 season right around the corner, ESPN's Football Power Index has predicted the Buckeyes' record for next season. And it sounds like it could be more of the same for OSU this fall. Per the FPI, Ohio State projects to go 10-2 in the '25 campaign with a 40.3% chance of winning the Big Ten, a 70.6% chance of making the College Football Playoff and a league-best 10.8% chance of winning a second consecutive national championship. Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon are predicted to sit atop the B1G with all three programs expected to be in the 10-win range. As for the rest of the conference, this is how the network sees things shaking out: Ohio State Buckeyes (10-2) Penn State Nittany Lions (10-2) Oregon Ducks (10-2) Michigan Wolverines (8-4) USC Trojans (8-4) Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-5) Indiana Hoosiers (7-5) Washington Huskies (7-5) Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-6) Illinois Fighting Illini (6-6) Iowa Hawkeyes (6-6) Maryland Terrapins (5-7) Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-7) Wisconsin Badgers (5-7) UCLA Bruins (5-7) Michigan State Spartans (5-7) Northwestern Wildcats (4-8) Purdue Boilermakers (3-9) ATLANTA, GA - JANUARY 20: Head Coach Ryan Day of the Ohio State Buckeyes interviewed after the Ohio State Buckeyes versus Notre Dame Fighting Irish College Football Playoff National Championship game on January 20, 2025, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. (Photo by John Adams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Despite losing some big time playmakers to the NFL, few schools reload as well as Ohio State when it comes to replenishing talent. And they already have arguably two of the best players in college football in safety Caleb Downs and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Advertisement With some tough games on the schedule though, the FPI can only conceive giving OSU slight odds to go undefeated. But as Texas' Steve Sarkisian has noted, going unbeaten in modern CFB is just no longer all that realistic. SEC Quarterback Eviscerates Quality Of Play In The Big Ten

SEC Quarterback Eviscerates Quality Of Play In The Big Ten originally appeared on The Spun. With one more year of eligibility thanks to a judge's order, Diego Pavia has made stated that he'd like to remain at Vanderbilt — although that's not his only option. Advertisement Sitting down on the "Bussin' with the Boys" podcast, the Commodores quarterback confirmed he received a $4 million NIL offer from another SEC team before taking some shots at the Big Ten. "You want to play with the best — you don't want to play with the Big Ten. … You ignore those calls," Pavia told the Michigan and Nebraska grads. "You know that." "But you've got to think about this, too," he continued. "The SEC is, like, nothing. Like, OK, the Big Ten, you have Ohio State, Oregon … the SEC, it's like week after week. You're going to get beat on. The Big Ten, you're not gonna get beat on with the Purdue, Nebraskas." Advertisement "The best pass rushers are from the SEC, except, like, Abdul Carter. You'll find one. You'll have one or two. … If the kid from South Carolina [Dylan Stewart] could've left, he would've been a first-round pick." Pavia helped turn Vanderbilt into one of the nation's most exciting teams after transferring in from New Mexico State prior to starting his career at the JUCO level. Last season he threw for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns with another 716 yards and six scores on the ground on the way to taking down No. 1 Alabama at home and nearly upsetting the Texas Longhorns as well. (Photo by)Vandy peaked at No. 25 in the AP Poll after failing to post a winning record in over a decade. Leading Pavia to take another shot at the B1G's Wolverines for not winning more than they do given their massive budget and donor base. Advertisement "Michigan's a great school, but they should winning more than they should with the cap that they got," Pavia claimed. "Like, Dave Portnoy donates to Michigan. I know their NIL is through the roof. Should you not win?"
