JALANDHAR: Strongly condemning the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB)'s "unilateral" decision to release 8,500 cusecs of water from the Bhakra Dam to Haryana, despite vehement objections from the Punjab govt and its people, Congress MLA and All India Kisan Congress chairman Sukhpal Singh Khaira has said that this move is a direct assault on Punjab's water rights and threatens the state's
agricultural lifeline
, especially with the upcoming paddy sowing season.

, with water levels in the Bhakra, Pong, and Ranjit Sagar dams significantly lower than last year. Haryana, having already utilized 104% of its allocated water share for the current accounting season, is now being favored by the BBMB's decision, which was made on so-called humanitarian grounds. This is nothing short of a robbery of Punjab's rightful share, orchestrated under political pressure from the BJP-led Central government and Haryana," Khaira said.
"Adding to the controversy, the transfer of Punjab cadre officer Akashdeep Singh, Director of Water Regulation, and his replacement with Haryana cadre officer Sanjeev Kumar, raises serious questions about the impartiality of the BBMB. Reports that Singh's transfer was falsely attributed to his own request, which he has publicly denied, further expose the manipulative tactics at play. Punjab's concerns are compounded by the fact that Sanjeev Kumar lacks experience in water regulation, as highlighted by Punjab's Chief Engineer," he said.
'This decision by the BBMB is not just a bureaucratic overreach but a deliberate attempt to undermine Punjab's interests. We will not allow our state to be deprived of its rightful share, especially when our fields are parched and our farmers are struggling,' said the Congress MLA.

Khaira also called for immediate action to reverse the BBMB's decision and demanded a transparent investigation into the transfer of Akashdeep Singh and the appointment of "an unqualified" officer in his place. He also urged the
Punjab government
to pursue all legal avenues to protect the state's water rights and ensure that Punjab's voice is heard in all future BBMB decisions.
'The BJP and Haryana cannot be allowed to arm-twist Punjab into submission. Our water is our lifeblood, and we will fight tooth and nail to protect it,' Khaira said, adding, 'I appeal to all Punjabis to unite against this injustice and join the statewide protests led by our farmers and leaders to safeguard our rights.'
The people of Punjab deserve fairness, transparency, and justice, he added.

The remarks come close on the heels of opposition parties, including Congress, alleging fudging of voter data to rig elections. The poll authority has dubbed these charges as absurd. Addressing the event, Kumar said preparation of voters list is one of the world's most rigorous and transparent exercises, reinforcing the accuracy and integrity of the electoral process. According to the Election Commission, the CEC noted that this robust mechanism has played a vital role in upholding electoral credibility across the country for years. Highlighting India's electoral integrity, scale and diversity, Kumar reaffirmed the role of the Election Commission in capacity building programmes for election management bodies (EMB) of countries around the globe. Over 100 participants representing EMBs of around 50 countries are taking part in the conference. He said the entire electoral process is closely monitored by political parties, candidates, general, police and expenditure observers and the media who, he stated, act akin to concurrent auditors at various stages. The CEC also highlighted the scale of coordination that underpins the conduct of elections in India. With over 20 million personnel, including polling staff, police forces, observers, and agents of political parties at the time of conduct of elections, the Election Commission becomes the world's largest organisation, surpassing the combined workforce of several national governments and major global corporations and ensures that India's nearly one billion electors are freely able to exercise their franchise, he said.

The decision to suspend the broadcasts was "to make good on a promise to restore trust in South-North Korea relations and seek peace on the Korean peninsula", the defence ministry said in a brief statement. A ministry spokesperson told AFP the broadcasts were halted Wednesday afternoon. Ties between the two Koreas deteriorated under the hardline administration of hawkish ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol. But Yoon was impeached and stripped of office earlier this year over an abortive martial law declaration. After winning last week's snap poll, Seoul's new President Lee Jae-myung pledged to improve ties with Pyongyang. The loudspeakers were turned on in the demilitarised zone that divides the two Koreas in June last year in response to a barrage of trash-filled balloons flown southward by Pyongyang. CM Siddaramaiah points to Congress high command, says re-enumerating caste population data not Karnataka govt's decision
A day after the Congress high command asked the Karnataka Government to re-enumerate the population figures of various communities in the state for its Socio-economic and Educational Survey, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the exercise was based on the directions issued by the party leadership and was not the decision of the state government. Responding to media queries at Gowribidanur in Chikkaballapur district, Siddaramaiah said, 'We will do whatever the high command says. It is not my decision. It is not the decision of the Cabinet. It is not the decision of our government. It is a decision of the high command. They have told us to go for re-enumeration,' he said. The directions from the high command had come ahead of a special Cabinet meeting convened by the Siddaramaiah administration Thursday, which was said to be keen on accepting the report. The decision was announced by Congress general secretary K C Venugopal after the high command held a meeting with Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. The report had kept several communities on tenterhooks, especially the Lingayats and Vokkaligas who had publicly criticised it for being 'unscientific'. 'The high command has told us that they have received some complaints because the survey was done in 2015-16. Nine to 10 years have passed, and the data has become old,' Siddaramaiah said. The government will now conduct the survey 'in a short span of time', within 60-70 days, he added. This does not mean that the entire report will be rejected, the Congress leader stated, referring to the various recommendations made in it. 'Principally, the report is accepted, but enumeration will be done again,' he added. The survey was commissioned in 2015 during Siddaramaiah's first term as chief minister but was placed before the Cabinet only in April this year. Dominant communities have opposed the report as the survey found that Other Backward Classes (OBCs) formed 70 per cent of the state's population and dismissed assumptions about the size of the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities. OBC groups, however, have asked the government to accept the report.
