South Africa's workforce faces significant challenges, including high unemployment, a youth unemployment rate exceeding 60%, and persistent skills shortages (Stats SA, 2024; Bhorat et al., 2020).
The global economy is shifting towards digitalisation, with industries such as mining, retail, and financial services increasingly adopting AI-driven technologies (Schwab, 2019).
Yet, only 22% of workers possess intermediate or advanced digital skills, exacerbating the skills gap (OECD, 2020). Historical inequalities further complicate workforce planning, with Black women facing unemployment rates of 40% (Stats SA, 2024). AI can bridge these gaps by enabling data-driven strategies to identify, develop, and deploy skills, fostering inclusive growth.
AI in Workforce Planning: Key Applications
Talent Acquisition and Skills Matching
AI-powered recruitment platforms streamline talent acquisition by matching candidates' skills to job requirements with high accuracy. Research indicates that AI can reduce hiring biases by up to 30% when algorithms are designed to prioritise skills over demographic factors (Dastin, 2018). In South Africa, where affirmative action and employment equity are critical, AI can ensure fairer hiring by anonymising candidate data and focusing on competencies.
Standard Bank, one of South Africa's largest financial institutions, implemented an AI-driven recruitment platform in 2022 to address skills shortages in data analytics and cybersecurity.
Using a tool similar to IBM Watson Recruitment, the bank analysed candidates' qualifications, certifications, and informal skills gained through online courses or freelance work.
This approach enabled Standard Bank to identify talent from underrepresented groups, such as Black graduates from rural universities, reducing hiring time by 25% and improving diversity metrics (Standard Bank, 2023).
The platform also integrated with South Africa's Employment Equity Act requirements, ensuring compliance with affirmative action goals.
South African organisations should adopt AI-driven recruitment platforms tailored to local contexts. These platforms must be trained on diverse datasets, including informal qualifications and non-traditional career paths, to tap into underrepresented talent pools like rural youth or informal sector workers. Partnerships with platforms like Pnet or Career Junction can enhance local relevance.
Process Optimisation Across the Value Chain
AI enhances efficiency across the organisational value chain by automating repetitive tasks, improving decision-making, and reducing costs.
In South Africa's mining sector, AI-driven predictive maintenance reduces equipment downtime by 15–20% (McKinsey, 2021).
In retail, AI optimises supply chain management by forecasting demand and minimising waste (Chui et al., 2018).
Anglo American, a leading South African mining company, deployed AI-powered predictive maintenance systems at its Kumba Iron Ore operations.
By analysing sensor data from mining equipment, the AI system predicted maintenance needs, reducing unplanned downtime by 18% and saving millions in operational costs (Anglo American, 2022).
At the macro level, this aligned with South Africa's National Development Plan 2030 by enhancing productivity in a key economic sector. At the micro level, the system optimised workforce allocation, allowing technicians to focus on high-value tasks rather than routine checks.
In the retail sector, Shoprite, South Africa's largest supermarket chain, implemented an AI-driven supply chain management system in 2023. Using a platform similar to SAP Integrated Business Planning, Shoprite forecasted demand for perishable goods across its 2,900 stores, reducing food waste by 12% and improving stock availability (Shoprite Holdings, 2023).
This optimisation required upskilling employees to interpret AI-generated insights, highlighting the need for integrated workforce training.
South African organisations should deploy sector-specific AI tools for process optimisation, such as predictive maintenance in mining or demand forecasting in retail.
Collaboration with government and SETAs can align these tools with national skills development initiatives, ensuring macro-level coherence.
Training programmes should accompany AI adoption to equip workers with data interpretation skills.

Image: Picture: Supplied Sustainability has become the watchword for South African corporates, as they grapple with both the public's demand for environmentally friendly products and the demands of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting. However, this shift is now not only fostering collaboration between waste producers and managers to develop solutions that meet both environmental and regulatory expectations, but is also reshaping business practices for a more circular and responsible economy. And it's not hard to understand why. Globally, 1.05 billion tonnes of food go to waste, and in South Africa, almost 10.3 million tonnes of food go to waste annually, however, the packaging that accompanies this waste has exacerbated the strain on our waste management systems. As a result, to manage these numbers, companies are now examining business models that allow them to correctly move from the linear take-make-dispose model to a system that minimises waste, conserves energy and raw materials, and reintegrates excess back into the cycle – what has been termed the 'circular economy'. At Interwaste, this principle is brought to life through practical, scalable solutions such as composting, which allows for the organic fraction of packaging waste — often tied to food disposal— to be diverted from landfill and transformed into nutrient-rich compost that feeds agricultural soils. In parallel, our Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology enables the conversion of non-recyclable packaging waste into a fuel substitute used in industrial applications such as cement kilns, offering a valuable landfill alternative and reducing dependency on fossil fuels. Additionally, given that in today's market, where consumer perceptions heavily influence brand value, demand is another key driver shaping packaging trends. In fact, according to research, consumers are willing to spend 9.7% more, on average, for sustainably produced or sourced goods, given that an astonishing 85% report experiencing first-hand the disruptive effects of climate change in their daily lives. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ It's no surprise then that companies are using this type of data to drive innovative, sustainable packaging designs — incorporating biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable materials, as well as reusable systems that support a zero-waste-to-landfill approach. However, if South Africa is to reach its zero waste to landfill goal by 2030, the reality is that 90% of waste from landfills must still be diverted correctly – and this means not merely just making use of recycling and reuse, by beneficiation technologies as well as, if we want to create value-adding opportunities which have the potential to create numerous environmental, social, and economic opportunities for South Africa. Simply put, achieving a zero-waste, sustainable country starts with better management of waste at its source, supported by innovative solutions, as well as an effective recycling system and a widespread culture of responsible consumption. And we need to start at a company level, where organisations examine their entire value chain to see how and where waste is created and therefore reduced, as well as where waste can be reused, recycled or repurposed. This approach, when applied correctly, will not only divert a large amount of our waste from landfill disposal, but it also has the potential to create numerous environmental and social opportunities for South Africans, including economic ones. While tackling food packaging waste requires navigating a complex web of environmental, economic, and social challenges, meaningful progress is within reach - if industry leaders, policymakers, and consumers unite behind bold, innovative action. An important point that emerges from this data is that if the fictional 'white genocide' and land seizures of Trump's imagination were actually unfolding, then South African commercial farmers – who are mostly white – would not be in a position to grow their exports to markets such as the US. South Africa's agricultural exports to the US increased 19% in the first quarter (Q1) of this year compared with the same period in 2024, according to data from Trade Map, which was crunched by the Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz) and released on Monday. It is an interesting trend that highlights several important points against the backdrop of a frosty diplomatic landscape amid US President Donald Trump's false claims about a 'white genocide' and the ruthless persecution of white farmers, which was on full display during his recent White House meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. For starters, as South Africa faces the prospect of exclusion from the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) – which provides preferential treatment to the US market for eligible countries – it is clear that there is American demand for agricultural products grown or made here. Specifically, these products are mainly citrus, grapes, wine, and fruit juices – South African products that could surely grow in the massive US market. Some might see America as a fairly small market in the broader scheme of things, with the 19% year-on-year rise in Q1 only amounting to $202-million – 6% of all South African agricultural exports in that period, which grew 10% to $3.36-billion. But 6% is material: this slow-growth, high-unemployment economy needs to pluck any fruit it can – and this stuff is low-hanging. Americans love citrus and fruit juice, a point underscored by the fact that global prices for these products are heavily influenced by the New York-based OJ futures market. Another important point that emerges from this data is that if the fictional 'white genocide' and land seizures of Trump's imagination were actually unfolding, then South African commercial farmers – who are mostly white – would not be in a position to grow their exports to markets such as the US. What this means: South Africa's commercial agricultural sector is a budding rose among the thorns of this moribund economy. It needs continued access to markets such as the US to grow and create badly needed jobs and investment opportunities while bringing in export revenue to help support the rand. South African farmers can find other markets, but the US, as the world's largest economy, remains the big prize. This does not mean that South Africa's agricultural sector isn't facing a range of serious political, economic and environmental challenges. The Expropriation Act is a red flag for South Africa's commercial farmers and investors more widely. That there are still glaring disparities in ownership – with only about 25% of farmland now in the hands of black South Africans, according to Agbiz estimates – is largely a reflection of state failure and dithering, corruption and incompetence under the ANC. Still, even in the face of other challenges such as climate change, South Africa's agricultural sector is prospering, a narrative at odds with Trump's view that a Zimbabwe-style mass land grab is under way. Americans clearly want to drink South African wine and fruit juice, and farmers here can meet that demand. Instead, Trump's racist resentment threatens to reap a bitter harvest from what should be fields of hope. BM

Image: Independent Newspapers JSE AltX-listed Altvest Capital said attributable profit fell to R47.94 million from R60.66m in the year to February 28, but the company is gearing up for a bigger implementation of its business and investment models in its new financial year. Headline earnings fell to 4.70 cents per share from 6.21 cents per share. Revenue increased to R7.58m from R973,261. No dividend was declared or paid, directors of the black-owned and managed financial services company said in a statement on Monday. Altvest Capital is a South African investment platform that focuses on expanding access to alternative investments. The company offers retail and institutional investors structured and regulated exposure to private market opportunities such as SME funding, venture capital, and other high-growth strategies. Altvest said it is developing a range of new investment structures that aim to meet the changing needs of investors and entrepreneurs. These include solutions designed to unlock value from previously under-utilised sectors and expand the scope of listed alternatives in South Africa. Chairperson Stafford Masie said in the inaugural integrated annual report that the year ahead marks a clear shift from vision to delivery. 'With multiple funds launched or in development - from SME credit funds to high-impact seed capital, and from township economy initiatives to entertainment and sports finance - the business has laid the groundwork for a diverse, resilient alternative investment ecosystem,' he said. Masie said Altvest's strategic decision to incorporate Bitcoin as a Treasury reserve asset reflected agility and foresight in the face of currency volatility and inflation risk. He said the board recognises that listed small caps in South Africa face ongoing market pressure. The path to unlocking shareholder value requires investor education, persistent engagement, and consistent performance, and the board was committed to supporting management in this regard, he said. 'Altvest is becoming what we envisioned: a platform that funds the next generation of South African businesses while opening wealth-building opportunities to everyday investors. Our task now is to mature the scaffolding around that mission (through governance, board capacity, and institutional partnerships) to ensure we not only move fast but also move responsibly and sustainably,' he said. CEO Warren Wheatley said that since their inception in 2022, they had been at the forefront of providing structured funding solutions to entrepreneurs, while offering innovative investment opportunities in high-growth SMEs, venture capital, and alternative assets. He said the Altvest SA Rugby initiative represented a particularly groundbreaking opportunity for investors to gain exposure to one of South Africa's most iconic sporting institutions. 'By partnering with 27four, EasyEquities, RainFin, and other strategic collaborators, Altvest is leveraging capital markets to secure long-term sustainability and international competitiveness for SA Rugby,' he said.
