Williams believes Quinault has ‘more to offer' at York

Glasgow Times3 days ago
Stuart Williams' prolific winner booked his spot in the new Group One when successful in the Criterion Stakes on the Knavesmire in June, a race which qualified him to start in the City of York.
'We had him spot on for that race (in June) and you're delighted to win a race there, of that prestige, and get the win-and-you're-in prize for the City of York,' said Williams.
'He obviously loves the track, it's suited him really well and he's unbeaten up there.
'It's hard to assess what's going to run at the moment, but they'll have to run hard to beat him. He tries like hell and wherever he finishes he'll do his absolute best. They'll have to keep up with him because he'll go a good clip – and he keeps going.
'In the race (the Criterion) he won there, they were sort of catching him halfway up the straight, but he did the second-quickest last furlong, so he was not stopping at the end. We're hopeful he can do that again.
'I still think he's got more to offer – I still think he's on his improve.'
He added: 'I think it's an important thing for the calendar to have a Group One seven-furlong race in Britain – it fits in well with the (Prix de la) Foret, which is six weeks further down the line. It should be a nice stepping-stone for that.
'We'll enjoy the day whatever happens, I'm sure he'll do his best and he won't be far away.'

A look ahead to the weekend action in JD Cymru North

NEWTOWN travel to Penrhyncoch tonight (Friday) for the first mid Wales derby of the JD Cymru North season. The Robins make the trip with confidence after opening the season with two consecutive wins but manager Nathan Leonard warned his players against complacency. Leonard said: 'I think it's one of the toughest away games we'll have as they will raise their game with it being a derby. ' I have never ever had an easy game at Penrhyn as a player or manager and I expect nothing different Friday night. 'Gari will have the boys fired up and we will need to quiet the crowd down early on as I expect a fair few in attendance. If we do that we can hopefully play our game and we know we can cause them problems going forward.' Penrhyncoch boss Gari Lewis expected a tough challenge and backed Newtown to challenge for honours this season. He said: 'It is going to be a huge challenge for us but it's a game we are looking forward to and will see what we can do against Lenny's team who are one of the favourites to win the Cymru North. 'They are a class team and we will need to be at our best to to compete.' Caersws host Mold Alexndra as Craig Williams bids to build on last week's opening win of the season at home to Brickfield Rangers. Williams said: 'We are delighted to get the first three points of the season on the board. 'We were good in most areas, controlled the game with and without the ball, limited Brickfield to very few meaningful opportunities and should have taken a few more of the good chances we created ourselves. Overall I was very pleased with the lads and the good reaction to the result the previous week.' Williams called on the Recreation Ground faithful to be the 12th man. He added: 'They are an established tier two side with a good squad and the game will be a real challenge for us. 'We are looking to build on last weeks performance, carry the momentum forward and keep winning games. 'We are at home again so looking forward to a good crowd to get behind us a push the lads on to another three points.' Guilsfield take on league newcomers Rhyl 1879 with manager Gavin Allen content despite last week's Nathaniel MG Cup defeat to Bala Town. He said: "The lads were excellent, particularly in the first half, where we played with real purpose and control. "It was tough to go out on penalties. That said, there were plenty of positives to take, and the performance gave us another reminder of the quality we have in the squad." Allen expected a tough afternoon at home to Rhyl. He said: "Our unbeaten home run in the league since I took charge is something we're proud of and want to keep building on. "We do face some challenges around squad availability with a few lads missing due to suspension and injuries picked up last week but this group has shown great resilience and togetherness already this season, and I've no doubt whoever steps in will be ready to contribute."

"I remember going there as a kid and watching all the great players playing," Mboko told the Women's Tennis Association."We were watching a lot of Serena and Venus [Williams], and that's where I took a lot of inspiration, because Serena was literally the greatest of all time. I used to see how the pros are and I used to be in so much awe of them. And now I'm seeing them like right beside me." A thinking woman's brand of tennis Beside, and behind her packing their racquet bags, at least 22 times this year… Mboko's not only making a big impression with her cerebral brand of tennis, but this is the kind of run that only great players tend to go on, as most of the winning streak records suggest over time., externalYes, there's a way to go to match Martina Navratilova's 74 in 1984, but Mboko is keeping very good Mboko talks as if she is thinking through the fear on the court when it matters most: as things appear to be going horribly was facing match-point in her semi-final with Elana Rybakina, but got into the zone."After the first set Elena was playing great tennis, and I didn't have much time to reflect on how I could improve. But in my head I thought I wanted to stay in with her and bring as many balls back in the court as I could. That mentality helped me get through a lot of difficult points."Perhaps there's little surprise - she has had some good advice from players she is yet to beat: her four older siblings, Gracia, Kevin and David."I just remember watching them from the sidelines and not wanting to be left out," Mboko said."I've actually never beaten any of them," she said. I remember at the beginning of the year, she always told me: 'Oh, you're so calm during the match.'""The US Open is the objective - who knows, maybe she can do something good? Here, we are going match by match, and hoping for no injury."Mboko hurt her hand in the semi against Rybakina in a heavy fall in Montreal, but says she doesn't feel it ahead of the benefit of being young appears to be the ability to bounce off a hard court, alongside the anxiety-free world-view teenage sports stars so often benefit former young Canadian star and another Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard said on Canadian TV after Mboko's win over Coco Gauff: "She was fearless, and she didn't seem to let the moment affect her that much."Her power and shotmaking were great. Taking it to her with her serve, [Mboko] Handled the moment in such a mature way."Mboko will need that maturity before the final against an experienced player who herself has never gone past the quarters in Canada: "It's crazy how life works, it's such a great feeling.""But I didn't think of lifting trophy up until now. I always try to focus on the present moment – but it's obviously a vision I would like to see. And that's what I'm playing for."

Waardah far from certain to go to York

The three-year-old daughter of Postponed stepped up to a mile and six furlongs for the first time with ease as she held off Danielle to secure the Lillie Langtry at Goodwood last week. That success put her in the conversation for the Group One contest during the Ebor Festival at York, but the lack of cut in the ground has cast doubt over Waardah's participation. However, the Farncombe Down trainer is unfazed at a potential three-month wait for her return at Ascot, if she does not get her preferred conditions. 'She's come out Goodwood well,' Burrows said. 'She's in the Yorkshire Oaks, that might come a bit quick to be honest and looking at the weather she does like to get her toe in a little bit. 'There's no significant rain anywhere through until the end of next week and I think the Fillies & Mares at Ascot is tailormade for her with near enough guaranteed soft ground, so I'll probably work my way back from that. 'If she's having to go straight there, then so be it. If we can get another one into her then great, that's a bonus.'
