Israel kills 23 Palestinians in Gaza, half of them while trying to get aid
Medics at al-Awda Hospital in central Gaza on Sunday told Al Jazeera that at least three people were killed and dozens wounded by Israeli fire as they tried to approach a GHF site near the so-called Netzarim Corridor.
Two others were killed and more than 50 injured in a shooting at starving Palestinians near the GHF aid point in Rafah's al-Mawasi area. The dead and the wounded were taken to the nearby Red Cross Hospital, according to medics.
Also, multiple Israeli air raids since dawn on Sunday killed at least 12 Palestinians in southern Gaza. Seven others were killed when an Israeli strike targeted a group of people in Beit Lahiya town in the north of the enclave, medics said.
Alarming levels of hunger have driven people to the few food distribution points in Gaza, but Israeli forces have responded with sniper fire and bombings. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in near-daily mass shootings, with the GHF accused of weaponising aid.
On Saturday, at least 79 Palestinians were killed, many of them while seeking aid. Medics at al-Awda and Al-Aqsa hospitals in central Gaza said at least 15 people were killed as they tried to approach the GHF aid distribution site near Netzarim Corridor.
There has been no comment from the Israeli military regarding Sunday's attacks.
The GHF began distributing aid in Gaza at the end of May after Israel partially lifted a three-month total blockade of food, medicines and other essential items.
Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, said Palestinians are starting to see GHF distribution hubs as 'execution sites', considering the repeated attacks there.
The GHF said its aid sites were closed on Saturday. But witnesses said thousands of people had gathered near the sites anyway, desperate for food as Israel's punishing blockade and military campaign have driven the territory to the brink of famine.
Earlier this month, operations at the group's aid distribution hubs were also temporarily halted following several incidents of deadly violence, in which Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian aid seekers.
The Gaza Ministry of Health said in a statement on Saturday that at least 274 people have so far been killed, and more than 2,000 wounded, near aid distribution sites since the GHF began operations in Gaza.
The Israeli military has admitted to shooting at aid seekers, but claimed it opened fire only when 'suspects' deviated from a stipulated route to the GHF distribution site.
Hamas, which rejects Israeli charges that it steals aid, has accused Israel of 'employing hunger as a weapon of war and turning aid distribution sites into traps of mass deaths of innocent civilians'.
The United Nations has also labelled the GHF aid distribution as inadequate, dangerous, and a violation of humanitarian principles.
'GHF, I think it's fair to say, has been, from a principled humanitarian standpoint, a failure,' Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told reporters in Geneva on Friday. 'They are not doing what a humanitarian operation should do, which is providing aid to people where they are, in a safe and secure manner.'
Israel's war on Gaza has killed nearly 55,300 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and has flattened much of the densely populated Strip, home to more than two million people, most of whom are displaced and facing acute hunger.

Healthcare officials in the besieged enclave reported on Wednesday that there is a severe shortage of blood as many would-be donors are too malnourished due to a severe Israeli-induced hunger crisis that has so far claimed the lives of 193 Palestinians, including five in the past 24 hours. Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, said blood donations are desperately needed across the remaining operational medical facilities in Gaza – al-Shifa Hospital, Al-Aqsa Hospital, and Nasser Hospital. 'We've seen at the blood banks many people who were begging doctors to allow them to give blood donations to save their loved ones, but they had to be turned away because they were not fit to donate blood due to the enforced dehydration and starvation,' Mahmoud said. Amani Abu Ouda, head of the blood bank at al-Shifa Hospital, said most would-be donors who arrive are malnourished, which affects the safety and quality of blood donations. As a result, she said, 'when they donate blood they could lose consciousness within seconds, which not only endangers their health but also leads to the loss of a precious blood unit.' More than 14,800 patients in Gaza are still in urgent need of specialised medical treatment, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned, calling on the international community to act swiftly. Israeli attacks have continued to pound Gaza, killing at least 38 people on Wednesday. An overnight attack in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood injured dozens of people. The attack targeted the Sheikh Radwan Health Centre, previously run by the UN refugee agency for Palestinians. 'Last night, while we were having dinner, we suddenly heard people shouting, calling for evacuation. There was no time to take anything no food, no clothes, no bedding. We just ran,' Ghaleb Tafesh, a displaced Palestinian resident, told Al Jazeera. Among those killed Wednesday were 10 hungry aid seekers, who were shot dead as they approached UN aid trucks and aid distribution sites operated by the United States and Israeli-backed GHF. So far, more than 1,560 Palestinians seeking aid have been killed by Israeli forces while trying to receive food since GHF began operating in late May. This week, a group of UN special rapporteurs and independent human rights experts called for the GHF to be disbanded, saying it is 'an utterly disturbing example of how humanitarian relief can be exploited for covert military and geopolitical agendas in serious breach of international law'. At least 20 Palestinians killed after aid truck overturns in central Gaza
At least 20 Palestinians have been killed and many injured after a truck carrying humanitarian aid overturned onto a crowd of people in central Gaza, according to the Government Media Office in the enclave. The incident occurred on Wednesday as large numbers of Palestinians gathered in central Gaza in search of food and basic supplies, amid an increasingly dire humanitarian crisis. Local officials quoted by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa said the vehicle overturned after Israeli forces directed it down what they described as an 'unsafe road'. Gaza Civil Defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said that 20 people were killed and dozens were wounded in the incident while hundreds of civilians were waiting for aid, the AFP news agency reported. 'Despite the recent limited allowance of a few aid trucks, the occupation deliberately obstructs the safe passage and distribution of this aid,' the Gaza Government Media Office said in a statement. 'It forces drivers to navigate routes overcrowded with starving civilians who have been waiting for weeks for the most basic necessities. This often results in desperate crowds swarming the trucks and forcibly seizing their contents.' The incident comes as humanitarian organisations warn of famine and disease spreading across the enclave, while deaths from starvation and malnutrition continue to rise. At least three people died from malnutrition on Wednesday, medical sources told Al Jazeera. A source at al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza confirmed that Hiba Yasser Abu Naji, a child, died from malnutrition. An infant also died from malnutrition, according to the source. An adult from Jabalia was also reported to have died as a result of malnutrition. On Monday, the Israeli military permitted 95 aid trucks to enter Gaza – a figure far below the 600 trucks a day needed to meet basic requirements, according to UNRWA. The current daily average is 85 trucks. Meanwhile, Palestinians approaching aid distribution sites run by the notorious GHF have frequently come under Israeli fire since the organisation launched operations in late May. Such shootings have become near-daily occurrences near its sites in central and southern Gaza. Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for OCHA, said that while some aid was entering the enclave, 'there should be hundreds and hundreds of trucks entering Gaza every day for months or years to come. 'People are dying every day. This is a crisis on the brink of famine,' he said, adding that tonnes of life-saving aid remain stuck at border crossings due to bureaucratic delays and a lack of safe access. Elsewhere in Gaza, several Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks across the enclave. Al-Awda Hospital reported that five people – including a woman and two children – were killed, and others wounded, in an Israeli raid on a house north of the Nuseirat refugee camp. Four more people were killed in an Israeli raid on two homes in the Shujayea neighbourhood of Gaza City.
