China's new X-shaped rail gun design doubles firepower and improves range

Chinese researchers are experimenting with a new rail gun design to help overcome the firepower limitations of existing designs. They believe that stacking two rail guns in an X-shape in a single barrel could be the solution they need.
A rail gun is a futuristic weapon that utilizes electromagnetic force, rather than explosives or gunpowder, to launch projectiles. Designs vary, but rail guns typically utilize electricity to generate powerful magnetic fields that accelerate a projectile to extremely high speeds, around Mach 7 (approximately 5,344 mph or 8,600 kph).
Many nations around the world have experimented with the technology, with China developing its own version in 2018. This gun was mounted on the Haiyangshan, a Chinese Type 072III-class landing ship, and was seen as a first-of-its-kind at the time.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has abandoned its rail gun program owing to cost, complexity, and the rise of hyper-sonic missiles. Japan is working on a smaller rail gun—essentially a technology demonstrator—that fires tiny 0.66-pound (300g) shells from ships.
X marks the spot
China's existing rail gun, which seemed insurmountable during its induction, has displayed its set of limitations over time. Being a naval gun, the weapon needs to pack a punch but this requires more power, which in turn leads to issues.
Too much current melts the metal components, like the U-shaped armature (which helps carry current and launch the shell). Magnetic forces can tear apart melted metal mid-shot, likened to a "magnetic saw."
This leads to the rails getting damaged, reducing performance. At present, the navy's rail gun is capped at firing 33-pound (15 kg) shells, which is not nearly enough to damage a ship—suggesting the weapon is not yet war-ready.

In a bid to address the issue, a group of Chinese army researchers—led by associate professor Lyu Qingao from the Army Engineering University of PLA in Shijiazhuang—proposed a x-shaped 'double-decker' rail gun which could overcome power limitations.
To this end, the design features each rail gun having its own power circuit, allowing them to operate independently but in parallel. The setup utilizes four rails and two U-armatures that work together.
Patent pending
Vertical magnetic fields don't interfere with each other, so stacking two rail guns does not reduce performance. You can think of it like twin engines on a rocket, delivering more power without one interfering with the other.
This design, the team believes, will enable the weapon to launch a 132-pound (60 kg) shell at speeds of at least Mach 7. The improved ordinance size also happens to be four times more than the current Chinese Navy requirement.
The team has already filed a patent for the new 'x-shape armature' technology, but has not conducted any live-fire tests as yet. If the trials prove successful, it should translate to ranges in the region of 248 miles (400 km), with the shell able to cross that distance in as little as 6 minutes.
The team also believes the impact speed of the shell could exceed Mach 4 on target. However, researchers caution that the 'proximity effect' (interference between nearby electrical currents) may still cause issues with performance and reliability. To this end, real-world testing is necessary to demonstrate its effectiveness.

The X-E5 is Fujifilm's tiny powerhouse. It's part of a line of cameras that has often been described as similar to the X100, except with an interchangeable lens. But the X-E line has evolved this year and is taking on a new shape. It used to be seen as a budget option, but at $1,699, that can no longer be said. Despite the fact that I've used almost every Fuji out there, this was my first time playing around with any of the X-E line of cameras. The X-E5 is a gorgeous, petite, and classy-looking camera with sharp lines throughout the body, and with buttons and an occasional concave edge for some extra flair and a distinctive look. It is ever-so-slightly shorter and thicker than the X100VI, but weighs about the same when paired with one of Fujifilm's pancake lenses. It is hard to keep your eyes and hands off of it. Over the last few weeks using the camera, I've had a lot of people asking me about it. Two even assumed it might be a Leica. The camera build feels incredibly solid. The dials and the buttons are very clicky; even the side door just feels right. The hinges on the flip screen are sturdy, and it can flip all the way around for some vlogging, too. All those little details matter and make the camera feel premium, but unfortunately this camera is not weather sealed (something you'd also expect for this price). The big new feature for the X-E is the dedicated film simulation dial. We've seen other Fujis adding these, but this was my first time using it. I rarely shift between film simulations since I have a few of my own, which I stick to 99 percent of the time. But the dial does make saving these sims easier, and encouraged me to experiment with different looks a lot more than before. When it comes to video, you get 6.2k up to 30fps and 1080p up to 240fps. The X-E5 can also film in F-Log and F-Log 2 color spaces, so there is plenty of latitude for post-processing, which will match well with other Fujifilm cameras. And there's HLG HDR too. The rolling shutter isn't the greatest, although it's far from bad. But the X-E5 shouldn't be your primary video camera for two big reasons: the video mode takes a toll on this battery, and I've had it overheat after 13 minutes of continuous filming. As stated earlier, this Fuji is equipped with the same sensor we've seen for a few years now. It is a 40MP BSI CMOS 5 sensor and it is capable of making some great images. It has been my favorite Fuji sensor since the CMOS III. The photos are sharp, with plenty of detail, and the noise levels are well managed. Anything above 2000 ISO will slowly start to break down and look mushy and soft. This is where the 7-stop IBIS comes in and helps you to keep that shutter open for a bit longer, therefore lowering your ISO too. I brought this camera with me on a trip to Mexico along with a handful of lenses. The X-E5 proved to be a brilliant travel camera. I loved having the option to stick to my pancake 27mm for an ultra-compact setup or bring the all-rounder 16-55mm zoom lens for some versatility on a long day out. But despite how much I loved my time with the X-E5, all of the recent Fujifilm cameras are becoming too similar to each other when it comes to performance. Some of those cameras excel in some way, but the X-E5 doesn't have anything unique going for it. It is a classic jack of all trades. And that's not a bad thing. But once you start looking at the prices, you might have some second thoughts. When the X-E4 came out it was $850 and was seen as a hidden gem in the lineup. At $1,700, it starts to become a harder sell. However, if you do pick this one, be assured you're picking a brilliant and gorgeous camera. It might no longer be a hidden gem, but it's still a gem. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) is the world's leading chip foundry, and its importance just keeps growing. Today, most advanced chipmakers just design chips, leaving their production to TSMC. That includes top names like Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and Apple. TSMC is benefiting from the AI surge, with high-performance computing (HPC) now making up 60% of its revenue -- up from 52% a year ago. The company is far ahead in advanced node manufacturing, and that lead keeps widening. Nodes refer to how many transistors can be fit on a chip, and the more dense a chip is, the more powerful and energy efficient it becomes. Chips built on 7-nanometer and smaller nodes made up 74% of TSMC's revenue last quarter, with 3nm chips accounting for 24%. With other foundries struggling, TSMC is the clear leader in the space due to its scale and technological expertise. As a result, it has been an invaluable partner to top chip designers. The great thing is that it doesn't matter which company takes market share, as they all use TSMC. With AI demand continuing to grow and new markets like autonomous driving emerging, TSMC looks like a cornerstone stock to own for the next decade. 3. Meta Platforms One company looking to win the AI battle is Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). Meta already owns one of the most powerful digital ad platforms in the world, and it is now using AI to supercharge it. Meta's Llama models are helping boost engagement across Facebook and Instagram, which means users are spending more time on the apps, leading to more ad inventory to sell. At the same time, its AI tools are helping advertisers build better campaigns and target users more precisely, leading to higher ad prices and stronger return on ad spend. But the biggest opportunities are still ahead. Meta is only just beginning to serve ads on WhatsApp and Threads. WhatsApp has more than 3 billion users, and Threads already has 350 million. Both are early in their ad rollouts, and that gives Meta a long runway for growth. Meanwhile, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is spending aggressively to secure AI talent, with a stated goal of delivering "personal superintelligence." SHANGHAI, July 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report from The Chinese government has proposed the establishment of a world AI cooperation organization as part of its efforts to bolster open, inclusive and equitable artificial intelligence development and governance globally. Premier Li Qiang announced the initiative when addressing the opening ceremony of the 2025 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai. Li emphasized the need for collaborative approaches to global AI governance to ensure that intelligent technologies are developed for the good of all. More than 1,000 high-level representatives from upwards of 40 countries and international organizations attended the opening ceremony of the three-day event, themed "Global Solidarity in the AI Era". Li said that the risks and challenges brought by AI development, such as machine hallucinations, deep fakes and AI proliferation, have aroused widespread attention. There is an urgent need to further consolidate a societal consensus on how to achieve a balance between development and security in the AI sector, he said. Li said greater emphasis should be placed on collective governance to ensure that AI ultimately benefits humanity. Given that global AI governance appears fragmented, it is essential to enhance coordination and alignment among countries around the world to establish a framework and rules for global AI governance with a broad consensus, he added. Noting that China places great importance on global AI governance and actively participates in promoting multilateral and bilateral cooperation in this regard, the premier said the nation is willing to offer more Chinese solutions to the international community and contribute more Chinese wisdom to global AI governance. In 2023, China proposed the Global AI Governance Initiative to promote an open, inclusive and fair approach to the development and governance of AI technologies. Last year, China proposed the AI Capacity-Building Action Plan for Good and for All to bridge the AI and digital divides, and to ensure the Global South benefits equitably from AI development. China actively promotes open source development, and is willing to collaborate with countries around the world to promote progress in software and hardware technologies, intensify open source initiatives, and collectively propel AI development to higher levels, Li said.
