Joann fabrics stores closing: See the full list of all remaining locations that will shutter this month

Fast Company23-05-2025

Fans of Joann have one last chance to grab fistfuls of fabric, yarn, and other critical sewing supplies before the ill-fated retailer closes for good—but time is running out.
The beloved brand, which has been winding down operations after seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a second time, will close its last remaining stores at the end of May, meaning this is the last full weekend that they will be open for business.
A spokesperson for GA Group, the asset firm that took control of Joann in February, shared the list of locations with Fast Company. It includes 444 stores in 45 states. At the time of its bankruptcy filing, Joann had roughly 800 locations, but hundreds of those stores closed in April, as Fast Company previously reported.
Among the remaining stores, California has the most, with around 40 locations left. New York, Michigan, Texas, and Florida, and Arizona also have relatively large shares of stores on the list.
Why did Joann fabrics unravel?
Founded in 1943, Joann Inc. grew into a craft superstore with hundreds of locations in the ensuing decades as a publicly traded company. By the late 1990s, it was the country's largest fabric and crafts retailer.
The company was taken private in 2011 by private equity firm Leonard Green & Partners for around $1.6 billion, only to go public again a decade later as the COVID-19 pandemic was fueling a resurgence of crafting and other at-home activities.
But those good times didn't last, and the company eventually succumbed to a number of factors that have battered many physical retail chains in recent years, including high inflation and the broader shift to online shopping. When it filed for bankruptcy in January, it reported nearly $616 million in debt obligations.
The remaining Joann stores have been holding going-out-of-business sales. According to GA Group, all stores will be closed by Saturday, May 31. You can find the full list below.

Amazon launches new R&D group focused on agentic AI and robotics

In Brief Tech giant Amazon plans to launch a new group within its consumer product division that will focus on agentic AI. Amazon announced this new research and development group at an event on Wednesday, according to reporting from CNBC. This group will be based out of Lab126, Amazon's hardware R&D division that is behind tech including the Amazon Echo and the Kindle. The reason this agentic AI group is likely based at a hardware R&D center is that Amazon hopes this group will develop an agentic AI framework to use in the company's robotics efforts and to give the company's warehouse robots more skills. TechCrunch reached out to Amazon for more information.

Wonder, Marc Lore's food tech startup, is planning to go public in early 2028

Billionaire entrepreneur and Wonder CEO Marc Lore has confirmed that his food and restaurant technology startup is planning for an initial public offering. And though it won't happen right away, he offered a very specific timeframe. 'We're going to IPO [and we're] kind of working backwards from March 30, 2028,' Lore said on Thursday at Fast Company 's Most Innovative Companies Summit in New York. 'Whether we hit it or not, we will see.' He added that a full board of directors is in place and that the restaurant technology startup wants to 'look and act like a public company' by the end of next year in preparation for the future offering. 'So all of 2027, we get four quarters of practice,' Lore said. 'That was really important to me to get four quarters of practice where we're giving EPS guidance, having quarterly earnings calls, doing the comp committee, treating it like a public company. So when we go public in Q1 of 2028, we've already had that muscle.' He predicted an accelerating growth rate for the business, continuing through 2028 with $5 billion in revenue, and additional 'big growth' in 2029. The 'Amazon of food' grows up Wonder, which Lore has described as a kind of 'Amazon for food and beverage,' has brick-and-mortar restaurants and a vertically integrated food delivery app. Lore is working to revolutionize the food and restaurant space, building a 'superapp for mealtime,' blending food delivery, AI-driven nutrition, and smart restaurant tech. The company most recently secured $600 million in a funding round backed by Google Ventures, for a post-funding valuation of $7 billion, according to PitchBook. Wonder ranks No. 45 on Fast Company's World's Most Innovative Companies list for 2025. The ultimate goal? To become the platform that meets all your food needs, while embracing personalized dining, driven by AI. Lore's Wonder not only owns the delivery platform but also the restaurants on its platform, with locations spanning 25 or 30 different restaurants across every cuisine type—from steakhouse to burgers and barbecue, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Greek, Middle Eastern, and Spanish tapas. The startup has also acquired a number of food companies, including Blue Apron, Grubhub, and the media brand Tastemade. When asked by Mansueto Ventures CEO Stephanie Mehta why an an IPO the goal, Lore replied, 'I am really excited about having that public currency.' The entrepreneur has founded a number of notable companies, including which he sold to Walmart nine years ago. 'I think there's so much growth and potential in this business that we could put a lot of capital to work, even post-IPO,' Lore said. 'I'm excited to do some big acquisitions.'

Rippling calls Deel ‘a criminal syndicate' and claims 4 other competitors were spied on, too

The fight between HR tech startups has heated up another notch this week as Rippling on Thursday filed an 84-page amended complaint in its lawsuit against Deel. The complaint accuses Deel of targeting, infiltrating, and compromising four other competitors, in addition to Rippling. The revised complaint doesn't name all of the four other alleged victims, except cryptocurrency-based tax and payroll compliance company, Toku. Toku is suing its competitor LiquiFilegal also alleging corporate espionage, and that Deel was involved. The complaint alleges that 'Victim-3 is a startup accelerator that previously partnered with Deel.' The complaint doesn't name, or even imply, who that is. (Y Combinator backed both Rippling and Deel but there's no indication this refers to the VC firm. YC has not yet responded to our request for comment.) The complaint also vaguely says that there are one or more additional victims who are 'one or more major competitors of Deel' in the employer of record market. A source familiar with the investigation believes that more witnesses will soon come forward at these other companies to offer details. (Deel did not immediately comment. We will update this story with its response once it does.) Rippling's amended suit also alleges that Deel's CEO Alex Bouaziz was the direct mastermind of it all, sharing screenshots of messages as its evidence. And, although this is a civil suit, Rippling is now implying that this could be a criminal matter. 'This case is about a criminal syndicate that operated from the shadows of a multibillion-dollar technology company – Deel,' the complaint reads. Rippling's amended lawsuit is now suing Deel under the federal RICO statute, as well as the Defend Trade Secrets Act, and California state law. The lawsuit directly names Alex Bouaziz, his father Philippe Bouaziz who is chairman and chief financial officer, and Deel's chief operating officer Daniel Westgarth. It's important to note that the lead attorney for Rippling is Alex Spiro of white-shoe law firm Quinn Emanuel. Spiro is a former prosecutor for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. (He's well known in the legal world, and has his own Wikipedia page.) Using words like 'criminal syndicate' in a civil case would be a deliberate choice. According to the source familiar with the case, federal prosecutors are now actively looking into the allegations against Deel as well. An investigation, however, is not a conviction. But should charges be filed, Rippling is doing its best to set up Bouaziz himself as one of the people responsible. The complaint even goes so far as to repeatedly use the colorful language 'the Bouaziz Racketeering Enterprise.' Other than that, much of the amended complaint reiterates what Rippling has already alleged. To recap: a Rippling employee confessed to being a paid spy for Deel in an Irish Court, in an affidavit that reads like a Hollywood movie. The employee admitted in court to taking sales leads, product roadmaps, customer accounts, names of superstar employees, and whatever other information was asked for. The employee was caught in a Rippling-set honeypot, both he and Rippling say. Rippling is suing Deel, alleging misappropriation of trade secrets, tortious interference, unfair competition, and more, largely based on the spying allegations. Deel has counter-sued in a case that is less about denying Rippling's charges and making a bunch of its own claims about Rippling. For instance, earlier this week, Deel filed an amended lawsuit that claimed that Rippling was spying on Deel by having an employee 'impersonate' a customer to obtain non-public product information. Grab some fresh popcorn. This battle between arch rivals shows no sign of slowing.
